Folsom Historic District offers unique Halloween celebration

by Matt Long

The Entertainer

he Folsom Historic District has become

the place to be to enjoy all that Halloween
has to offer.
For more than five years, the Historic District has been the site of Night of 1,000 Pumpkins, a home-grown event that has morphed
into a huge spectacle with upwards of 10,000
people attending. This years event will be held
from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23.
This event has gone viral on social media,
said Stephanie Rodgers, executive director of
the Folsom Historic District Association. People come here from as far away as Vacaville, San
Francisco and even Nevada. People want to see
what its all about.

FLE_October_2015_04.indd 6

As the name of the event says, its about

pumpkins for starters. There are 1,000-plus
pumpkins all throughout the Historic District,
a large majority of which are carved and donated by Intel. The Wool and Sutter Street parking
lots are reserved to showcase all the pumpkins.
At the conclusion of the event, the pumpkins are
recycled by local farmers.
Trick-or-treating for the kids at the businesses on Sutter Street is open from 6-8 p.m. There
is also a kids fun-zone block that will feature
various vendors with fun activities for children.
Last years event had activities such as a photo booth, pumpkin bowling and bounce houses,
to name a few.

Cynthias Dance Center will entertain the

crowd with a performance beginning at 6 p.m. at
the outdoor amphitheater. At 6:30 p.m., a childrens costume contest and parade will be held.
The Halloween classic, Its the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, will be shown at the amphitheater beginning at 7:30 p.m., followed by
Back to the Future II.
There will also be a haunted house that will
be on the top level of the parking structure at
the corner of Reading and Leidesdorff Street.
It is entertainment for the entire family, from
kids to teens to parents, said Rodgers. Everyone dresses up and its a safe Halloween celebration for all ages.

Zombie Train: Evacuation! Rolls Into Sacramento

Sacramento River Train re-launches zombie themed railway for Halloween

by Matt Kramer

The Entertainer

s autumn is arriving, the Sacramento River Train will be rolling in

the Halloween season in joyfully terrifying style bringing its zombie
themed rail ride to the Capitol city for the third year running. This
year Zombie Train: Evacuation will feature a new twist on the zombie infested railway theme of past years. The event will begin on October 2
and run through November 7, boarding from West Sacramento.
Regarding what to expect, Andrew McDaniel of Sierra Railroad tells
us that this year is going to involve major changes along with new options
based on patron feedback.
It is an entirely new experience. It used to be structured a lot differently.
We re-imagined the whole experience. Previously, we had guns. So the idea
(revolved around) shooting zombies. Passengers enjoyed the experience of
firing back against the zombie hoards, but with limited toy gun supplies,
many were left out of the full role-playing aspect.
This year the experience promises to be more inclusive and spookier than
ever. Zombie Train: Evacuation will be set in a world where the fight is over,
and the only option left is to flee through a post-apocalyptic Sacramento.
The zombies have basically won. Theres no fighting back, its just
evacuating.
Different actors will guide passengers along through various storylines,
as they navigate multiple zombie encounters on and off the train. Along

FLE_October_2015_04.indd 8

with the standard experience, there are a limited number of add on tickets
available. Passengers with these tickets can opt to have zombie makeup
done before the trip. There is also an adults only car option, a new feature
this year. The car will include a free drink in the form of wine, beer or soft
drinks for those wishing to abstain from alcohol.
Each evacuation experience will begin at 400 North Harbor Blvd. in
West Sacramento. Boarding will commence about 20-30 minutes before
departure times, scheduled for 7 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. The full experience
will run approximately an hour, with time on the train constituting around
40-45 minutes of the adventure. McDaniel recommended evacuees arrive
early to secure comfortable seats.
The event will be family friendly and there wont be an abundance of
gore, but parents are advised to use discretion in deciding if their children
are able to handle some spooky fun.
McDaniel told us that one of the more spine tingling aspects of the
zombie train is that it wont be clear who on the train is going to turn into
a zombie throughout the course of the ride.
There may or may not be infected people in the car, he advised. Be
careful who you sit beside!

ooking for a scary way to celebrate Halloween and support

a good cause at the same time?
Hand4Hope and Scare Away
Hunger, two haunted house powerhouses, are teaming up this year
for a good cause.
The partnership, known as
Scare4Hope, will be offering leadership lessons for youth through
the process of creating the haunted house, as well as raising funds
and food for causes within
the community.
Scare4Hope is fully comprised
of youth, said Samantha DeLeon,
communications coordinator for
Hands4Hope. We are so excited
to see the sense of empowerment
between these students in this great
opportunity and responsibility.

Scare4Hope is a mock company complete with department leads,

a CEO and all the duties that go
along with the roles.
My hope is that the two organizations will work together to
bring more haunted houses, leadership training and development to
our communities for young people,
said Deven Thorne, 18, CEO of
Scare4Hope.
A first year at Folsom Lake
College and recent Ponderosa
High graduate, Deven got involved with Scare Away Hungers
youth-driven annual haunted
house three years ago.
We raised food and money to
go to the local food bank, he said.
It was a fun community event trying to raise food to give back to

community. Weve gotten literally

tons of food.
This year, the Scare4Hope build
team is working to create an eerie
insane asylum known as Haunted Hills Asylum. In keeping with
the theme, the haunted house will
have a feeling of confinement to
deprive the senses, confuse and
disorient, Deven said.
Due to the terrifying nature
of the activity, the Haunted Hills
Asylum is recommended for adults
and guests in eighth grade or
above. There is also a slightly less
scary version available for the easily spooked.
The Haunted Hills Asylum will
take place from 6-10 p.m. Fridays

Town Center, 4367 Town Center Blvd., Suite 134 in El Dorado

Saturday, Oct. 31 is the Halloween Ball at the

vandalism and theft. Restoration began in 2011
when The Preston Castle Foundation received a
50-year lease on the property. Repair has continued after the Foundation received ownership
of the castle and nearly 13 surrounding acres
in 2014. The approximately 50,000-squarefoot castle is a California Historical Landmark
and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, the castle offers guided tours on Saturdays, April through September and select other
days, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. There also are special
tours. The castle has been the site for weddings,
birthday and retirement parties, murder mystery
dinners and meetings, said Jerry Funderburgh,
vice president of the Foundation.
The five nights of Halloween observance
mark the castles largest event. There will be cas-

tle tours through decorated rooms, a scary but

fun experience, he said. This is a fun scare tour
and not a historical tour of the entire castle. This
tour may be too intense for younger children.
The big show is Halloween night, featuring
a masquerade ball, dancing and costume contest.
There will be a no-host bar and food vendors.
Tickets for the Halloween nights are $20,
adults only (18 and older) for the costume ball.
For the other nights, general admission for ages
14 and up is $20 and $10 for youth under 14.
Tickets are limited for each night, so order
early to make sure you can get in, Funderburgh
cautioned. There are no refunds.
All Halloween events are held from 6:30
p.m.-11 p.m. Address of the castle in Ione is

Folsom Renaissance Faire Sweeps Into Town

Romantic pageantry, swords, drama and fun in Shakespearean setting

by Matt Kramer

The Entertainer

he Folsom Renaissance Faire will commence with its 23rd year on

the weekend of October 17 and 18 in Folsom City Lions Park. This
family friendly event will be set in a 16th century Elizabethan shire
and will feature William Shakespeare who has come, battling writers block, to find inspiration for his plays.
The Shakespearean theme will be seamlessly integrated into the
framework of the Faire. Marti Meirnik of Renaissance Productions said,
We have a series of actors who resemble the personas that you would
meet in Shakespeares plays and sonnets. (They) will be performing
specific scenes, (with) some actors improvising. Patrons will be able to
see and recognize (characters such as) Othello and Hamlet dispersed
throughout the shire.
The Faire will also feature Queen Elizabeth I at court, with opportunities to meet Her Majesty and learn about courtly life, a giant rocking
horse and knights jousting in twice daily tournaments which Meirnik
said have both a theatrical and a sporting aspect.
There is a show part (of the joust) where the knights talk to the crowd,
and expound about how amazing and spectacular they are.

FLE_October_2015_04.indd 14

But the joust itself is not staged. Alongside the joust the Faire will
feature fencing competitions, English country dancing and comedy acts.
There will be nearly 30 guilds in attendance, each providing its own
type of entertainment, and between 70-80 vendors show casing their
wares including high end jewelry, leather work and woodwork. There will
also be an abundance of savory and delicious food and drink including
sausages, crepes which Meirnik said are phenomenal, and two pound
turkey legs. To wash it all down there will be mead as well as wine.
Meirnik said that a distinguishing factor of the Folsom Renaissance
Faire is its focus on entertainment over merely vending.
A lot of events youll find that youre pretty much walking through
a street market. Thats not where our concentration lies. Our shows are
deeply engrained with history, as well as theatrical activities. Our concentration lies on entertainment. The people could spend the whole day
at the Faire and not be bored.
Before the Faire arrives there are also a number of deals on tickets
through Groupon and through the Folsom Renaissance Faire website.

Movie Start Time: 6:30pm

Fall is an amazing time of year for El Dorado

Hills Town Center. After an event filled summer,
complete with concerts, car shows and of course
the ever popular July 3rd fireworks celebration,
Town Center begins a transformation for the
holidays. As the leaves change color and the air
cools with the sinking of the sun, the month of
October is filled with seasonal events for the
entire family. On October 3rd, the 1st annual
Foothills Fall Festival will be taking place in
the Steven Young Amphitheater. A benefit for
local El Dorado Hills non-profit Team Donate
Life, the festival includes kids activities with
a mini pumpkin patch, face painting and
balloon artists while the adults enjoy local beer
and wine tasting, a barbecue dinner and live
music from well known country band, Fred
McCarty and Company. On Friday, October 9th,
Outdoor Movie Night is back, featuring Hook
on a large inflatable screen in the Steven Young
Amphitheater. The event is free and Regal Theater

popcorn is always served! Also opening on

October 9th is the annual Scare4Hope Haunted
Hills Asylum. This haunted house is the largest in
El Dorado County and is sure to terrify all who
dare to enter. Of course there is always the option
of the fairy walk-through for the younger children
or the faint of heart! Rounding out the month of
October is one of the most popular events of the
year, the Halloween Spooktacular. On October
31st, families enjoy trick-or-treating in a safe
and friendly environment as they stroll through
Town Center and visit participating businesses.
The event concludes with a costume contest for
kids and dogs in the Steven Young Amphitheater
with prizes for Most Creative, Best Hero/Villain
or Princess, Funniest and Best Group. Thank you
to all of the amazing businesses who help bring
these family events to Town Center. For more

n Old Town Sutter Creek, visitors can park

their cars and enjoy the day as they walk to
seven different wine tasting rooms all within a
few blocks of each other, interspersed among
restaurants, boutiques and bed and breakfast inns.
Named for their location along Historic
State Highway 49, the seven members of Wine
on 49: Baiocchi, Bella Grace, Cinque, Le Mulet
Rouge, Miller, Scott Harvey, and Yorba wineries
- are all ready to offer guests a taste of vino and a
cheerful conversation.

FLE_October_2015_04.indd 20

"It's a good feel - a Main Street, USA kind

of feeling," said Ann Kraemer, owner of Yorba
Wines. "People say hi. They greet you. It's a very
welcoming place."
Historic Highway 49 takes in both Hanford
Street and Main Street in Sutter Creek. Six of
the member tasting rooms are on Main Street.
Yorba is around the corner on Hanford Street.
"The tasting rooms work together to raise the
awareness of Sutter Creek as a wine destination,

and the realization that it helps everybody, so

let's work together," Kraemer said.
The association started off with Sutter Creek
Wine Tasting, which was a co-op of three different wineries. As of Oct. 1, the boutique shop will
feature only one winery - Le Mulet Rouge. As
more wineries opened tasting rooms along Main
Street, they decided to form their own collaborative marketing group.
"A lot of people don't know Amador County,
much less Sutter Creek, much less you can go

wine tasting in Sutter Creek," Kraemer said. "So

we got some work ahead of us."
In addition to offering a diverse selection
of wines, Wine of 49 provides an opportunity
for guests to have a closer bond with the people
who brought the wine to the glass.
"We are all pretty much small, family operated wines and often when you go into one of the
tasting rooms, you'll probably meet one of the
owners," Kraemer said. "But they're really different. They're different styles. Different varietals.
Somebody comes in and you start tasting with
them and you realize they would really like so
and so. We all try to be very good about knowing what everybody else is pouring and knowing
where to direct people. Often times, somebody

FLE_October_2015_04.indd 21

will come in and say, 'I only have one more

stop.' So you can say, 'Well, what are you looking for?' and you can direct them to somebody
else's shop."
A stroll up and down the street finds a variety of fun, fruity wines alongside some serious
award-winning wines. Most are estate-grown
and showcase the Amador terroir. The tasting
rooms are well staffed so there's not a long wait.
Most have patios so that when it is busy, guests
can spread out. Up the street, stores like Provisions and Sutter Creek Cheese Shoppe sells
sandwiches and cheese plates that expand the
experience past the wine.
"We're seeing a lot more young people coming in to town than when we first started," Krae-

mer added. "You've got your very seasoned wine

drinkers that did their reading and knew exactly
what they were looking for and have a sophisticated palette looking for a very structured winery versus some that are just learning and are just
so excited and very open for you to tell them
about grape growing."
The owners and wine makers all love to engage visitors in conversation and educate them
on the nuances of their craft.
"It's not just 'here, have a sip,'" Kraemer said.
"They tell stories or just chit chat. It's very open
and relaxed."

Harvest fun at Apple Hill

by Gwen Clayton

The Entertainer

he perfect pumpkin and other harvest festivities are only a short drive away at Apple
Hill farms and ranches this October.
While most farms opened in September
with the start of apple season, October is one of
the busiest times of year according to Lynn Larsen, president of Apple Hill Growers Association
and owner of Larsen Apple Barn and Bake Shop.
Along with sprawling orchards and apple treats, many farms and ranches also have a
cornucopia of fall festivities and fun, including
pumpkin patches, corn mazes, a scarecrow contest and more.
You can come find gourds and pumpkins, a
lot of decoration pumpkins and fabulous crafts,
a lot to do with fall, Larsen said.
Bake shops from a number of farms also
offer a taste of the season with treats like
pumpkin rolls, pumpkin cookies and of course,
pumpkin pie.
We like to encourage visitors to come and
find the ranch you fell in love with or fall in love
all over again, Larsen said, suggesting a weekday trip specifically.

FLE_October_2015_04.indd 26

Many Apple Hill farms are offering specials

on weekdays during October to encourage visitors to come enjoy the area without the traffic.
Coming here is like an adventure, Larsen
said. Walking through the grasslands, seeing
the beautiful fall foliageits like going back
east with leaves falling and trickling down in
amazing colors.
One Apple Hill farm specializing in the autumnal harvest is Cardaninis Pumpkin Patch,
located at 2655 High Hill Road in Placerville.
With more than 15 varieties of pumpkins, a
corn maze, gourds, ornamental corn and baked
goods, guests are certain to find just what they
need to celebrate autumn.
Some popular pumpkin varieties include
Halloween carving pumpkins, the Sugar Pie
(often used in cooking), the Cinderella, the Lil'
Orange Farmore and the Sweet Dumpling. Big
or small, orange, white or green, the perfect
pumpkin isnt far away.
