History
Evangelicalclergymenwereknownas"Biblicals"or"NewReformers".TheSecondReformationwasmost
zealouslyprosecutedinConnachtwhereitwasencouragedbyThomasPlunket,2ndBaronPlunket,[1]theAnglican
BishopofTuam,KillalaandAchonry.OppositioninthewestwasledbytheRomanCatholicArchbishopofTuam,
JohnMacHale.Themovementendeavoured(unsuccessfully)andinecumenicaltermsdisastrously,toproselytise
amongsttheRomanCatholicpopulationofIreland,frequentlybyhighlydubiousmeansinwhichmaterialbenefits
wereofferedasarewardforconversion.[2]TheoccasionoftheGreatFamine(Ireland)wasalsoseizeduponby
the"newReformers".Togetfood,starvingCatholicswereobligedtoapplytotheworkhouseofthelocalPoor
Lawunion.Conversionwasexpecteduponadmittance.QuakerandIrishpoliticianAlfredWebblaterwrote:
"Uponthefaminearosethewidespreadsystemofproselytism...andanetworkofwellintentioned
Protestantassociationsspreadoverthepoorerpartsofthecountry,whichinreturnforsoupandother
helpendeavouredtogatherthepeopleintotheirchurchesandschools...Themovementleftseedsof
bitternessthathavenotyetdiedout,andProtestants,andnotaltogetherexcludingFriends,sacrificed
muchoftheinfluenceforgoodtheymighthavehad..."[3]
Conversionsexactedundertheduressofthosecircumstanceswereoftennotlonglivedastheconvertmaynothave
beenactingoutofpersonalconviction.
"Atthetimethosefamilieswhotookthe"soup"becameknownforgenerationsas"soupers"afterthe
FaminemanyreconvertedbacktobeingRomanCatholicsandinturntheybecameknownas
"jumpers",soonecouldhavethe"souperDoyles"or"souperMurphys"andlater,afterthefaminewas
over,the"jumperDoylesor"jumperMurphys".[4]

TheSecondReformationwasalsoopposedbymoderatesintheChurchofIreland.Itpeteredoutduringthe
1860s.

Othermeanings
Theterm'SecondReformation'hasbeenusedinanumberofcontextsinProtestantism,andcontinuestobeused
bysometorefertocontemporaryevents.InGermanyandNorthernEuropegenerallyitislikelytorefertoaperiod
ofCalvinistpressureonLutheranismfromabout15601619.[5]The"DutchSecondReformation"orNadere
Reformatie("AnotherReformation")isusuallyplacedratherlater,fromabout1600onwards,andhadmuchin
commonwithEnglishPuritanism.
