MYTHS THAT SHOULD NOT DERAIL YOU

The best person for the job does not necessarily win itoften
its the person who gives the best interview.
Interviews are more than just giving technically correct
answers. Theyre also very much about building rapport.
Not all interviewers know what theyre doing; your job is to
know how to handle the good and bad interviewer.
Its better to be honest and admit ignorance than try to
pretend you know an answer and come across as
disingenuous and less than bright.
Good looking people win jobsmaybe in Hollywood movies,
but on the whole, employers are keen to hire talent over
superficial factors.
Striving to give the perfect answer can get you into trouble.
Its better to give a good answer thats to the point rather
than searching for perfection; besides, often theres no such
thing as the perfect answer.
Do not ask questions for the sake of it. Only ask a question if
you have a genuine query that has not been covered.
Interviews are formal occasions requiring relatively formal
behaviors.

Interviewers will expect this and may react negatively if they

dont see it.

Interviewers do not spend all their time looking for your flaws.
Theyre more interested in getting an overall picture of who you
are. Avoid answering questions defensively. Its much better to
see every question as an opportunity to highlight your best points
SELF REFLECTION-

Answers to these questions will help you to understand yourself

better. Once you reflect on these and come up with your own
qualities, experiences, achievements etc. you will be far more
confident.

1. Make a list of 5 things you enjoy and why

2. Make a list of 3 things you are proud of
3. List down 2 people you admire. What are the qualities they
have?

4. Write down a situation where you were highly motivated (with

reasons)
5. Think of 3 scenarios where you were appreciated (What did
people tell you?)
6. Ask your family and friends to tell you what they like about you.
Ask what needs a change?
7. Make a list of 5 personal qualities you have. Think of how these
qualities will help you in your job.
8. List down 2 major decisions you made in your life.
9. List down two risks that you took (why and the result)
10. What made you decide on your field of specialization?
11. A conflict situation that did not get resolved (Why and what
could have been done)
12. Two situations where your leadership qualities emerged
13. What has not been so great in your life? (Marks/exposure/peer
group/financial situation)How are you dealing with it?
14. Your last project/internship and the outcome
15. Your biggest failure. How have you dealt with it and what have
you learnt?
16. Your most difficult assignment. How did you deal with it?

WORDS OF WISDOM
The following extracts are from a discussion on ET Channel this
month where the top bosses of various companies were
answering questions of the winners of the Young Leadership
Program.

Mistakes- M.D Axis Bank talked about disbursement of loan twice

in the early years of her career. She was given time and space to
rectify the error. The lesson she learnt was that genuine mistakes
are a part of the learning process.
The most powerful quality you can have is
Intelligence combined with humility is unbeatable.

intelligence.

The biggest mistake you can make is lack the ability to learn from
others.
Comfort Zone-A rocket targeted for space has to get out of the
comfort of being on the ground. If you want to pitch higher get
out of your comfort zone .If you are not happy with your job get
out of. Have the courage and conviction to quit else shut up!
Happiness-I love what I am doing. I have been in the FMCG sector
for 6 years and I have enjoyed every bit of it. I realize I belong
here; its about being happy and feeling good. So, for this
happiness if I have to give up some part of my personal or
professional life I am willing to do it.
Values-Do have and Donts are not the same for every company.
They have to be created. But values will always be the same.
Have value systems in place
Cynics believe that values are a frill, an add on and Nice to
have. My experience has been that values are the bedrock on
which you build and sustain a business
Money-is important. Todays generation is more money minded
than the earlier one. However, if you want to be a holistic leader
then some element of you has to work towards a better society
a better nation. To be a respected leader you have to think of a
better society, you have to think of nation building. Maybe now,
maybe 5 years from now. Some amount of greed is good. To make
a difference and get recognized you need balance. A person with
a Broader Perspective is likely to succeed.

Entrepreneurs -Good organizations recognize that young people

come with fresh eyes; they have the ability to think and do things
differently. It is a colossal waste if you do not create a culture that
is open to doing things differently
Time Management- Is different for each individual. It is up to you
how you are going to create the work and personal life balance.
You need to draw the line. You cannot do things the way your dad
did. You are now forced to be available 24*7.thanks to the
mobile phone and the internet so its up to you how you deal with
it.
Time management will be different in the different phases of your
career. Lack of time is your responsibility, Learn right delegation,
creates the right leadership .If it still does not work something is
wrong..
Ambition - Learn to walk before you run. Have the ability to dream
beyond yourself.
