MAK336E Finite Elements Method

Term Project Study Layout

Basic Requirements:

You are going to decide the subject of your project yourself.

a. It should be a part of an assembly/structure/machine
b. Single part homeworks will be valid concerning that it is of enough complexity.
Each project has to contain a 2D or 3D geometrical model. 1D models are allowed as
long as they form a relatively complex andlarge structure (such as modeling a complete
roof of a football stadium as a truss/beam structure model).
You have to submit a 1-page proposal for your project by the due date. You need to have
approval for your subject! The approval list will be announced on Web & in Class..

Intermediate Steps to be Completed:

Your project will have some chekpoint dates for progress control.
At these dates, you are asked to deliver a CD/DVD along with a minor progress report
(3-4 pages) on what you have done by then.
Your CD/DVD and progress report should have your Student ID number, Name and
project title for tracibility.
Delays in delivery will result in penalty to be applied over grade.

Final Report Layout:

Your report should follow the rules of a basic technical report and should cover the following
topics (in the given order).
Executive Summary & Contents
Description of the subject of the project, along with basic principles and
Assumptions and Models developed
Material Models used with relevant references
Boundary conditions and loading conditions with assumptions
Analyses Results and interpretations including mesh-size and parameter (i.e. Youngs
modulus) sensitivity analyses.
Design improvements if any, or other comments on results.

Hands-on Application:
Each student will show their expertise in using the commercial softwares and their knowledge on
FEM applications and modeling procedures on the topics of their term projects, in an applied
session as a part of the final exam. You will conduct a very simple analysis or some steps of it
under Lecturers guidance, and maybe reply some basic questions on why you do it.
