Tounderstandtheneeds,goals,andobjectivesoftheschoollibrarymediacenterwemustfirstgainanunderstandingoftheschool
community'sthoughtsandideasoftheschoollibrarymediacenter.Iconductedasurveythattouchedbaseonresources,collaboration,and

LongrangeGoals

Goal1:Provideamore21stCenturyAccesstoLibraryresourcesthroughavirtuallearningspace.

IchosethisasagoalbecauseIhavefoundfrommypreviousresearchwiththisschool,itseemedtolackavirtual
learningspace.Ifaschoolismeanttobeinthe21stCentury,Ifeelitisimperativethatlearningcanbelinkedto
technology.Furtheringmyrationale,IfoundinEmpoweringLearners,thebookstatesthata:
schoollibrarianshoulddesignandmaintainalibrarywebsitethatprovides247accesstodigitalinformationresources,
instructionalinterventions,referenceservices,linkstootherlibrariesandacademicsites,informationforparents,and
exhibitsofexemplarystudentwork(2009,p.33).
Givingstudentsandteachersvirtualaccessprovidescontinualsupportforteachingandlearning,andawaytotakeadvantageofthe
schoollibrarysresourcesafterhours(2009,p.33).Whilestudentsdousesometechnologywithintheclassroom,Ifindthatmost
teachersusethetechnologytoentertainthestudentsnotreallyforresearch,norforinterventions.

Goal2:Createacollaborativenetworkwithteachersusing21stCenturyLibraryinstructiontobuildinquirylearningamongstudents.

AccordingtoEmpoweringLearners,oneofthejobsortitlesofaSLMSisthatofacollaborator.Theschoollibrarianmustpromotethat
theschoollibraryprogramplaysanessentialroleinteachingandlearning.So,heorshemustcreateanacceptableplanwithschool
andeducationdecisionmakers,andcollaborations(2009,p.41).Also,afterconductingmysurveythereweremoreparticipantsthat
hadnotevercollaboratedwiththeSLMSbecauseeithertheydidn'tknowtheycouldortheyfeltthattheyhadnoneedto.Therefore,I
proposethatagoaltowardsmakingacollaborativenetworkwillenhanceandnurturestudentlearningtobecomemoreproductive
citizens(SugarmillElementarySchool).

Goal3:Convertthelibraryintoamoreinvitingenvironmentconducivetolearning,suchasaLearningCommons.

Afteranenvironmentalscan,thephysicalspaceofthelibraryisnotveryinvitingnordoesitpromotemotivationtoseekservicesofthe
library.Also,afterthesurveywasconductedsomeresponseswerethatthelibraryneededtobeupdated.Therefore,Irecommendthat
thelibraryberevampedtoencouragemoreuseofthespaceandservices.Thephysicalspaceshouldhavemultiple,flexiblespaces
thatserveavarietyoflearningtaskssuchascollaborating,communicating,informationseeking,reading,browsing,andusingdifferent
multimediaformats.Inaddition,thespacehasareasforindependentwork,presentation,andproductionareas,meetingareas,and
comfortablespacesforreading(2009,p.34).

Goal4:Providestudentsandteacherswithmoretechnologytoenhancelearningopportunities.

Afterconductingtheonlinesurvey,itwasstatednumeroustimesthatsomeoftheparticipantswouldliketohavemoretechnology
withintheschoolforstudentsandteacherstouse.Inadditiontothesurvey,itisstatedinEmpoweringLearnersthat"using
multimediatechnologiesandglobalresourcescanhelpcreateauthenticlearningexperiencesthatteach21stcenturyskillsandconnect
whatstudentsarelearningtotheoutsideworld(2009,p.24)."
