Course description
In this course, provides introduction to dynamic behavior and automatic control of industrial processes; lab includes
open loop, closed loop, and control of process variables by using conventional hardware and real-time digital
computers. Experiments are planed; Students will collect and analyze the experimental data using the theoretical
principles of process control. Additionally, students will learn to conduct a laboratory experiment safely and will have
the opportunity to improve their communication skills through preparation of laboratory reports.
Course Objectives:
1. To understand the dynamic behavior of the systems
2. To evaluate response of fist and higher order characteristics.
3. Study the installed characteristics of the valve.
4. Study if there is a hysteresis in the control valve and sensor.
5. Evaluate the tuning of a PID control via manual and automatic tuning.
6. Evaluate the effect controller on the control system
Course Outcomes:
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Compare mathematical models response with the physical systems
2. Calculate model parameters which explain the dynamic behaviors of the Process and Control systems
3. Test the range of process variables where the process in stable and controllable.
4. Utilize/select available control valves to meet process needs.
5. Choose PID modes that give robust control systems.
6. Make use of MIMO Control systems
Experiments: (Students would perform any 12 experiments out of the following 16 experiments)
1. Study of step response of Mercury-in-Glass thermometer
2. Study of control valve flow coefficient
