According to Vedic scriptures, we are not this body but we are soul.

Our soul is
covered by this body composed of dead matters earth, fire, water, air and ether just
like we wear clothes to cover the body.
This body is moving because of the
presence of the soul. As soon as soul comes out of the body, it has no value, just
like a car without a driver cannot move an inch. Generally the activities we perform
in this material world are related to body. We are so much absorbed in bodily
activities that we hardly think about our soul. Result is that in spite of having so
much material advancement, we are hungry within. Our mind is not peaceful. It
always finds some cause of distress. Reason is that we try to satisfy needs of this
body but not the need of soul. Just like we feed the body to stay healthy and fit, we
need to feed the soul. Now what we can feed to the soul? Our body is material but
our soul is spiritual. It is part and parcel of Lord. Lord Krishna says in Bhagwad
Geeta 15.7-

mamaivamso jiva-loke jiva-bhutah sanatanah

manah-sasthanindriyani prakrti-sthani karsati
Translation- The living entities in this conditioned world are my eternal, fragmental parts.
Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the
mind.
Since soul is spiritual, it needs some spiritual food. Material things can never satisfy
the soul and that spiritual food for the soul is Chanting of Holy names of Lord. In
this age of Kali, only chanting of holy names can satisfy our soul. According to
Kalisantaran Upnishad from Krsna Yajur Veda-

hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare

hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare
iti sodasakam namnam kali-kalmasa-nasanam
natah parataropayah sarva-vedesu drsyate
Translation- The sixteen names of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra: hare krishna hare
krishna krishna krishna hare hare, hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare,
destroy all the inauspiciousness of the age of Kali. This is the conclusion of all the
Vedas. (Kali-santarana Upanisad from Krishna Yajur Veda)
In Vedas, four yugas are mentioned and every yuga has a prescribed method of
worship to the supreme lord. Srimd Bhagwatam 12.3.52 says that-

krite yad dhyayato vishnum tretayam yajato makhaih

dvapare paricaryayam kalau tad dhari-kirtanat
Translation- Whatever result was obtained in Satya-yuga by meditating on Vishnu, in
Treta-yuga by performing sacrifices, and in Dvapara-yuga by serving the Lord's lotus
feet can be obtained in Kali-yuga simply by chanting the holy names of Lord.
So they have very short life so they cannot perform dhyan. Pure brahmanas are also
not available who used to ignite the sacrificial fire by mantra. So chanting of the

holy names is only way by which one can deliver himself from cycle of birth and
death and can go to the spiritual world which is highest perfection of life.
Actually other methods of worship are not suitable for Kaliyuga people because the
qualities of kaliyuga people are given in Srimad BHagwatam 12 .2.1-

r-uka uvca

klena balin rjan naks hyaty yur balamm smr htih h
Translation- ukadeva Gosvm said: Then, O King, religion, truthfulness, cleanliness, tolerance,
mercy, duration of life, physical strength and memory will all diminish day by day because of the
powerful influence of the age of Kali.
pryen hlpyus hahsabhya

Translation- O learned one, in this iron age of Kali men have but short lives. They are
quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always disturbed. SB 1.1.10
kaler dos ah -nidhe rjann asti hy eko mahn gun hah h
krtand eva kr hs nh hasyamukta-sagah h paramm vrajet
Translation- My dear King, although Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good
quality about this age: Simply by chanting the Hare Kr hs nh hamah-mantra, one can become free
from material bondage and be promoted to the transcendental kingdom. SB 12.3.51
harer nma harer nma harer nmaiva kevalam
kalau nsty eva nsty eva nsty eva gatir anyath
Translation- In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is chanting the
holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.
