HIP-NOSIS

is the biggest belly dance Festival in INDIA and the 5th Edition of Payals
Dance Academys Annual Belly Dance Event with the aim of bringing together Bellydancers
from around the world to build the middle-eastern dance community in INDIA, and provide a
platform for aspirants of this art form.
This festival will see over 3000 attendees from all over INDIA.

The Flee market will see a display of various belly dance

Artists
Essa Duhaime
Essa, from Canada, is the Founder & Creative Director of Diva
Bellydance Academy Pvt. Ltd. She is a Certified Bellydance
Teacher through: Hadia-Master Teacher & Award Winner. With
Formal Dance Training since the age of 5 in Ballet, Jazz, Funk,
Breakdance, Hip-Hop & Salsa, She found her true Love 10 yrs.
back..Raqs Sharqi. She has trained with World Masters such
as Jilina, Sonia, Rachel Brice & Issam Houshan from the
Bellydance Superstars, Mahmoud Reda, Nada El Masriya, Tito Seif,
Fifi Abdou, Aziza, Yousry Sharif and many more. She has been featured in several Magazines
such as: Femina, Perfect Woman, Outlook, Complete Well Being, Jade, Scope & Beauty Mag.
Her Workshops have been Featured on UTV, Aaj Talk & Headlines Today. She has
Choreographed & Performed in various Movies, Music Videos, Fitness DVDs & National
Competitions. Essa is an Acclaimed & Respected Teacher & Performer Worldwide Mesmerizing
thousands of people with her Glamorous, Stylish & Unique Performances.

Meher Malik
She is one of the most famous belly dance artist in India
trained from London, Paris and Egypt, and runs the biggest belly
dance school in India called Banjara School Of dance. Meher Malik
Was a finalist in India's most renowned reality shows like 'INDIA's
GOT TALENT', 'Just Dance' , 'Entertainment ke liye kuch bhi
karega' and Comedy Circus.
She was the PERSONAL TRAINER TO RANI MUKHERJEE FOR the
song "AGA BAI" IN "AIYAA"

Payal Gupta

Payal gupta is an international performing artist. She has gained


tremendous amount of experience in performing, teaching and
directing, while learning various forms of dance from reputed
instructors like Aziza, Sadie Marquardt, Leyla Jouvana, Silvia
Salamanca, Nika Mlakar, Nadia Nikishenko, Queenie, Suhaila
Salimpour and more. She is trained in belly dance, modern
contemporary, jive, kathak and freestyle.
She also holds a record in the INDIAN BOOK OF RECORDS in the
field of belly dancing and runs the largest school of belly dance in
Southern India.

Katie Holland
Katie Holland is one of the most renowned performers and master
teachers of Arabic and fusion dance in Europe and India.
Dancing from the age of three she has studied Ballet, Tap, Modern,
African, Samba, Bollywood, Sacred Nepalese, Egyptian Belly Dance,
Yoga, Martial Arts and currently Bharatanatyam. She teaches and
performs across Europe and India regularly performing with Arabic
and fusion musicians including by personal invitation from Hossam
and Serena Ramzy and their Egyptian Ensemble. Currently based in
Delhi she offers intensive courses for Arabic Dance teacher training
and runs spiritual dance retreats in Goa.
She has performed for and with many bollywood personalities
including Shaan, Sukhbir, Madhuri Dixit, Yash Chopra and at countless high profile events
such as the Indian Football Awards, IFFI and Dainik Jagran. Katie is the featured dancer on
tour for BBC world music award winner Abhishek Basu and his band ISM.

Dipika Vijay
Dipika is a senior instructor at VEVE DANCE Mumbai. She has been
trained by the famed international Belly dance and Hip Hop fusion
artist Anasma in liquid fusion belly dancing and body waves. Dipika has
also trained rigorously in Ashtanga Yoga by the acclaimed Deepika
Mehta and also in Shakti Yoga with the prominent Shakti Yoga and
Kalaripayattu instructor Pradeesh Raj. She also conducted an intensive
training course of belly dance for the Kannada film star, Parul Yadav,
for the record-breaking song 'Pyarge Agabittaite' for the film
Govindaya Namaha, 2011.

Veronica Simas De Souza

Veronica is the founder of VEVE DANCE Mumbai. She has been


dancing and learning since the tender age of 5 years. She has Kathak
under the guidance of her guru Sunaina Hazarilal, Ballet & yoga.
Veronica specializes in Belly Dancing and has traveled world over and
trained with various honoured belly dance artists. Picking up different
styles and techniques and thus has developed a very individual style.
Our list of illustrious students include Katrina Kaif, Gauri Khan, Nicole
Faria (Femina Miss India Earth 2010), Manasvi Mangai (Miss India
World 2010), Riya Sen, Rakhi Sawant, Rosa Catalano, Namrata
Baruah, Masumeh Makhija and many more.

Sanjana Muthreja
Sanjana is a senior dance instructor at VEVE dance, Mumbai. She is
trained under international artists at the Nile Group Festival that is
held at Egypt every year. Sanjana has also been trained in liquid
fusion belly dancing and body waves. Sanjana is trained in Kathak
from Natwari school of Kathak of the Benaras Gharana. Sanjana has
also trained rigorously in Ashtanga Yoga and also in Shakti Yoga.
Sanjana has personally trained the Bollywood Beauty Sneha Ullal
and Miss Zara Eram Karim for the talent round at Miss India
Worldwide, 2012.

Yagna Chedda
Having 7 years of Intense & Rigorous training in the Art of Tribal
Fusion Belly Dance and Astanga Yoga, Yagna Chheda has mastered
this Dance form by constantly attending Workshops & Events
Internationally. She has taken private workshops with MORIA
CHAPPELL and Sonia from BDSS.
In New York with Anasma, in Egypt with Mahmood Reda ( Father of
Oriental Dance in Egypt) & performed at the prestigious Kala Ghoda
Dance Festival, Mumbai.
Being a mother of a 9 month old baby girl, she also conducted
Pregnancy Belly dance workshops during her pregnancy which were
observed & applauded by many Gynacs & pregnant mothers after
realising the benefits of this dance form for having a smooth
pregnancy..

Deepthi Shetty
Deepthi is the director of Tarantismo Creative Dance company. She
has represented the Country at the Asia Global Belly Dance Festiva
in Singapore and was also a quarter finalist on the hugely popular
show Indias Got Talent. Trained in a multitude of dance styles like
Modern and Indian Contemporary, Jazz Funk, Kathak, and Belly
Dance, Deepthi has performed at numerous festivals and events
across the country.

Sakshi Malik

She is a member of the famous belly dance troupe Banjara from the
Banjara School of dance Delhi. She is trained in various dance forms
like Hip-Hop , Jazz , Contemporary and Odissi. She has also been on
reality shows such as - India's Got Talent Khoj 2, Comedy Circus,
Entertainment Ke liye Kuch Bhi Karega and Just Dance.
She also danced for the movie AIYYA with Rani Mukherjee,
Choreographed By - Vaibhavi Merchant and Meher Malik for
Bellydance.

Megha Manjunath
Megha is an instructor at VEVE DANCE Mumbai. Megha has also
trained rigorously in Ashtanga Yoga with Veronica Simas de Souza
and also in Shakti Yoga with the prominent Shakti Yoga and
Kalaripayattu instructor Pradeesh Raj.
As an instructor, one of the high points in her journey of belly
dancing was when she conducted a Belly Dance Workshop in
association with the Hindustan Times Fitter Mumbai Campaign at
Moksh, The Wellness Place. The workshop was well attended by
many dancers and dance instructors, doctors and students alike.

Sanaz Bhaktiari

Sanaz Dance Studio is the first company established in South


India in 2007 that provides training and education in Belly Dance.
Founded by Sanaz Bakhtiari, who herself carries decades of
training in Persian Dance,ballet, Belly Dance; the company realizes
Sanazs dream of making people experience the joy of Belly
Dancing. Sanaz studied Kathak to understand the rich culture of
Indian dance and received a diploma in Indian Choreography.
Sanaz holds a Bachelors degree in Journalism from Azad University
in Tehran, Iran. She has experience in various art forms such as
photography and pottery & sculpture. She is also trained in theater
and has given several theatrical performances. She has conducted
many workshops in Bangalore & other cities. The studio provides a
wholesome experience that includes development of required
body language, to master the art of Belly Dance. Sanaz has developed her own style of
teaching which makes learning Belly Dance easy and enjoyable.

Leena Vie
Leena Vie is a passionate middle-eastern fusion dancer with
Central Asian ancestral roots ,While focusing on bellydance, she
has cross trained in other forms - contemporary, classical forms
(ballet, Oddisi), American Tribal Style (ATS), Salsa, Contact
Improvisation (CI) which lends flair and solidity to her technique
while serving as a resource for fusions. She performs for
corporate shows, live musical bands and productions. Some of
her performances include The Musical Production - HAIR and
Delhi International Arts Festival (DIAF) 2012.
Her training spans across London and Egypt and with several
renowned bellydance artists such as Nour (Russia),, Khaled
Mohammed (Egypt), Leila Haddad (Paris), Farida Fahmy (Egypt),
Ahmed Refaat (Saidi dance, Egypt), Lubna Emam (Egypt), Natalia
(Russia) and Anasma (New York) .She has also trained with other dance artists while in
Attakkalari (Indias premier professional dance school) such as Clare from UK (ballet), Michel
from France (contemporary) and Christina (contact Improvisation)
She also started the Red Tent Movement in India which delves in Womens issues and offers
bellydance modules regularly as part of it.

Understanding of the Arabic music and rhythms are of utmost


importance to a belly dancer! From making a dynamic entry to a
graceful exit in a performance is based on musicality. Learn
regular and irregular rhythms and patterns of oriental music!

Khaleeji- means of the gulf. This style of belly dance from the
gulf region that uses the khaleeji rhythm typically and is largely
improvisational!
Assaya is a bamboo staff that was used by the Egyptians in
combative dances was later incorporated into oriental dance.
Learn a fun fusion with the stick to peppy modern Egyptian
numbers. (Sticks will be provided at the WS)

Fundamental techniques of the tribal fusion belly dance style.

Tribal Basics choreography- techniques from the previous


workshop added to a unique sequence!

The main folk style a belly dancer needs to know is Saidi. More
than just dancing with a stick, Saidi is a lively, energetic and
earthy folk dance style that expresses the dancing tradition of
rural Egypt. Experience its joy and power!
Delve deep into learning the authentic saidi technique by
identifying how to correctly hold, spin and work with the assaya
(Cane), as a further enhancement to your dance. Also explore new
ways to manipulate the cane as a prop, which will not only add
richness and grounding to your dancing but will also help you
attain great dexterity in your movements.
This drum-solo comprises of foxy, keen and alert movements
executed to the heady music of drumbeats. Basic belly dance
moves have been spiced up with layering, travelling & shimmies
to form a very captivating and titillating choreography.
Slick, speed are tantalizing are the keywords for this
choreography!
Luscious shimmies of different kinds; including the bum shimmy,
knee shimmy, vibration shimmy, bunny shimmy, turkish shimmy,
brazilian shimmy and more. Bringing basic shimmies at par and
working with different intensities.
How to move upper body and lower body with divergent moves at
the same time.
Adding a tier of fluid moves to contrasting crisp ones.
Peppering shimmies with layers of accents, arms and foot
movements.
A deft and short routine will be drilled in the end to sum up all the

fuse and experiment with. This workshop amalgamates this
exciting history and approaches Belly Dance as a mode of
expression, encouraging the students to use it to portray relevant
ideas to current music.

and in this workshop you will learn the fundamentals of hand and
foot positions, spins, arabesques etc. and how you can use these
in belly dance to give you smooth transitions, turns, postures and
incredible elegance.
The veil is the most graceful and enticing prop in belly dance and
to use two veils just doubles effect. Learn how to play hide and
seek and work magic with two veils, that will leave the audience
guessing the secret!
Belly dance or oriental dance was essentially an improvisational
art form but choreographed and line dances are seen more lately.
If you are keen on taking belly dance professionally then this
workshop is highly recommended for you. You will learn how to
structure your improvisation, understand the rhythms and
interpret musical instruments that you could apply for any song
that you decide to perform instantly.

teach you the famous RIO- CARNIVAL style called samba no pe
.It is recognized around the world as a symbol of Brazil and is
considered one of the most popular Brazilian cultural expressions
traditionally.
Samba dance is less technique oriented as compared to belly
dance and comprises of strong lower body movements and is
majorly about flaunting the style! Go Sambaaaaa......!
(age: 5 to 12 years)- Belly dance is getting highly popular among
children lately. They will learn the basics of isolation that will be
totally useful while learning other forms of dance. A fun workshop
for kids !!
Bollywood fusion with belly dance. Learn artistic bellywood
choreography on beautiful bollywood numbers!!
Zills, probably the only accessory among those used in modern
day Belly Dance is as ancient as the dance itself. It has amazing
range of sounds and rhythms to offer. Its a great addition to your
dance routine when you learn to use the zill clangs to the dums
and teks of the Darbouka.

Turkish Roman, a purely gypsy dance that uses subtle pelvic


movements with strong expressive gestures and complicated
footwork. Set to 9/8 rhythm originating from turkey, Turkish
Roman is a celebratory social dance performed in the streets in
everyday clothing.

Bellydance is a bit restrictive since most movements are standing.


The goal of this workshop is to free the body and use

This workshop will teach you how to add the all alluring nazakat or
exquisite charm into your performance and also will help in
bringing out the delightful nakharas to help transform you from a
dancer to a consummate artist.
Powerful rhythm of dholak form a major essence of the Lavani.

Lavani songs and marking of beats using a fusion of belly dance

Your entry will be judged on the following points:
1)Choreography - please do tell us if you are using someone else's
choreography!
2) Music, theme and interpretation
3) Technique
4) Timing & Synchronisation (duo/group dances)
5) Stage presence
6) Costume and presentation
7) Group dances will be judged as a whole - solos in a group dance are allowed but
should not overshadow the group performance.
Running order and rules
Round one - performance to own or named choreography.
Round two - Soloists only: Improvisation! Improvisation on judges selected set of music.
General information for participants

Participants music duration should be between 3- 5 minutes. Exceeding this


limit will lead to disqualification
Please e-mail us your music if you have it ready well before the event!
Usage of props are allowed like veil, finger cymbals, sword, fan veils, stick etc.
