Teachers Manual for the MarEngPlus Web-based Maritime English Learning Tool

This manual explains how to use MarEngPlus lesson plans. It explains both the layout
and the relevance each item has to Model Course 3.17, Maritime English, 2009 Edition.
Each unit in the Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced sections of the course material
has a lesson plan like the one below, along with an answer key. A Glossary is also
available.
Lesson Plan
Since many maritime teachers use Model Course 3.17, Maritime English, 2009 Edition
as a reference point, this has been chosen as the basis on which to compare the
material developed by the MarEngPlus material creators with the existing elements as
defined in the IMO Model Course.

Example
In the unit Radio Communications the task or exercise is identified and a direct reference
is given to the relevant knowledge, understanding and proficiency as defined in Model
Course 3.17, Maritime English, 2009 Edition. This is of value to the teacher since it gives
guidance on how the objectives of a Maritime English course may be addressed by
using the MarEngPlus program. A fuller explanation is given in the following pages. We
trust you find the lesson plans easy to use and of value to your teaching.

In the Teachers Manual there are tables like the one above which refer to several aspects of the MarEngPlus materials. These are clarified
on the next page.
The Table information is linked to Model Course 3.17, Maritime English, 2009 Edition as follows:
1. Core Section 2 refers to Intermediate level English for all functions and levels. Core Section 1 refers to Elementary level English
for all functions and levels.
2. This denotes the Chapter; in this case Radio Communications which is found in the advanced section of MarEngPlus.
3. This indicates two elements; firstly, the sub unit Crossword within the main unit of Radio Communications and secondly, the task
at hand which can range from conversation or dialogue to, in this case, Exercise.
4. These numbers are reference numbers as identified in the IMO Model course. In this case the material in the unit Crossword,
includes Grammar: uses the correct form of the verb in the context of a sentence which corresponds to Core section 2, sections
5.2 and 5.5 (knowledge, understanding and proficiency) in the IMO Model Course.
5. The estimated completion time is divided up into the time required to use the CD and the time required for self-study and practice
and reflection. Many units have multiple sub units e.g. text, conversation, reading etc. At the end of each section, in this case
Crossword, a total is given. At the end of each unit the total number of hours required to complete the entire unit is given.
Note: the times given are estimated.
