Efficiency of MAN B&W 5L90MC VLCCL11-V Diesel Generator and Turbo Generator in terms of Fuel Consumption at Neptune Engine Room Simulator

Brief Description of the Proposed Project:

Generators are used to supply electrical power in places like a vessel wherein there is no permanent power supply. A generator is fundamental machinery onboard where all operations start with in. Moreover, its efficiency is most important concern in considering its operation.

The operation of various generators such as diesel generator, turbo generator and shaft generator are commonly

The operation of various generators such as diesel generator, turbo generator and shaft generator are commonly seen on board a ship. Thus, these generators make the ships operation more efficient regarding in its fuel consumption in the electricity production. The study would like to test the efficiency of diesel generator and turbo generator in terms of fuel consumption. This will also determine which type of generator is the more economically efficient to use.

Significance of the Project or Justification of the Study:

The study will know which is more efficient in terms of fuel consumption between diesel generator and turbo generator. This could be a proof on the validity of findings using different approach. The study could give new knowledge in the field of marine engineering. Maritime students and maritime institutions can use this knowledge in other fields or studies. In line with this, it would be a reference for the other researchers in their studies.

Statement of the Main/General Problem:

This research aims to determine the Efficiency of MAN B&W 5L90MC VLCCL11-V Diesel Generator and Turbo Generator in terms of Fuel Consumption at Neptune Engine Room Simulator

Statement of the Specific Problems or Research Questions (RQs):

The study would also like to answer the following specific problems.

1. How much fuel oil is consumed during the electricity production in Diesel Generator for one
  • 1. How much fuel oil is consumed during the electricity production in Diesel Generator for one hour?

  • 2. How much fuel oil is consumed during the electricity production in Turbo Generator for one hour?

  • 3. Is there a significant correlation between the efficiency and fuel consumption of generator?

  • 4. Is there a significant correlation between the efficiency and type of generator?

Conceptual Framework: Identification of Variables:

1. How much fuel oil is consumed during the electricity production in Diesel Generator for one

This study would like to determine the efficiency of turbo generator and

diesel generator in terms of fuel consumption. Efficiency will depend on

influenced of fuel consumption of the generators which is the independent

variable. The type of generator has a direct effect on the efficiency being the

intervening variable because of its capacity to produce electricity.

Hypothesis:

There is no significant relationship between the efficiency and fuel

consumption of generator. There is also no significant relationship between

the efficiency and type of generator.

Description of Research Design: There are two kinds of experimental design – true experimental design and

Description of Research Design:

There are two kinds of experimental design – true experimental design

and quasi-experimental design. The research mode of the study is true

experimental design. True experimental design is the most accurate form of

experimental design. It tries to prove or disapprove a hypothesis

mathematically with statistical analysis. (Martyn Shuttleworth, 2008. True

Experimental Design. Retrieved Aug 31, 2015)

The study has this true experimental design because it deals about

more on quantitative data. The study will test the efficiency of the turbo

generator and diesel generator where the values are nominal.

Procedure and Materials:

The research would only use the desktop computer at MAN B&W

5L90MC VLCCL11-V Neptune Engine Room Simulator.

Description of Data Analysis/Statistical Tools

Fuel consumption of the turbo generator and diesel generator that will

be recorded in the simulator will be statistically analyzed and compared in

order to compute for the efficiency. The research will record the consumption

of fuel every hour in the simulator. The conditions of both generator

operations are considered.

In order to determine the difference between two generators in terms of

fuel consumption with respect to time, the research will use the t-test

statistical tool.

T test uses means and standard deviations of two samples to make a

comparison. The formula for T test is given below:

S 1 = Standard deviation of first set of values

S 2 = Standard deviation of second set of values

n 1 = Total number of values in first set

n 2 = Total number of values in second set.

The formula for standard deviation is given by:

Definition of Terms:

Diesel Generator - is the combination of a diesel engine with an

electric generator (often an alternator) to generate electrical energy.

Efficiency - the ratio of the useful work performed by a machine or

in a process to the total energy expended or heat taken in.

Fuel - a material such as coal, gas, or oil that is burned to produce

heat or power.

Generators- are a device that converts mechanical energy to

electrical energy for use in an external circuit.

Power supply – is an electronic device that supplies electric energy

to an electrical load.

Turbo Generator - is the combination of a turbine directly connected

to an electric generator for the generation of electric power.
