1- as the decades passed, all too frequently the crimes became more vicious and

a new breed of delinquents was born

2- spending public money on the children who break laws.
------------------1.The parents of children who commit crimes and are place in a Juvenile detention
center should not be able to claim they child on the income tax return. The state
is taking care of the child and paying for the child food, housing, and special
education. The state should recoup the money from the parents especially if the
child is on public assistance. This will motivate the parent and child to do the right
thing
-----------------------------I agree with Judge Judy view and here my reason why. The reason her tough love
approach makes sense to me is that all children need disciple in they lives. You
must learn what is right and what is wrong. The parent must be a role model to
the child and have a great influence in a child development. We must be involved
in a child school and daily activities. If you are a first time offender, you should
pay the price of a person arrested 10 times. The reason is that you will not
continually coming back into the courtroom like it is a revolving door. Judge Judy
believes the Juvenile court system should be mean and tough.
---------------I agree with Judge Judy view and here my reason why .We as a society has to stop
making excuses for children who commit crimes on a daily basis. The children are
out in the streets at 11:00 A.M. on a school day when they supposed to be in
school. If the police see these young people hanging out in the street when there
is no school nearby they need to challenge them and take them to the school or
notify they parents. We as a society put to many band-aids and make excuses for
bad behavior. We have to confront the problem and deal with it as a society.
Parents must take full responsible for the child actions rather it is good or bad.
The parent must disciple they child when they are not doing the right thing. If you
do not show the child the right way, now then it is going to be too late when they
are grown.

1. What writing pattern does Flaherty use in the first four paragraphs that serve
as an introduction to this essay?
Narrative.

2. Which sentence in which paragraph contains the definition of ghetto defense?

Paragraph 6, sentence 2.

3. Which sentence in which paragraph contains the best definition of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?
Paragraph 10, sentence 4.

4. Does Attorney Robin Shellow argue that all poor people living in the ghetto be
granted excuses for any crimes they commit? If not, what is she arguing?

No. She limits Morgan and other special individuals: Morgan belongs to a very small group
of inner-city residents with tremendous intra-familial violence (paragraph 10).

5. How is Morgans case arguably similar to and different from those of battered
spouses?

Morgan and battered women who have committed homicide have argued that they were
desensitized and traumatized by violence. The difference is that the battered women killed
the perpetrators of the violence, whereas Morgan killed a stranger.

6. How is Morgans case arguably similar to those of certain Vietnam veterans

with PTSD who committed homicide?
They both experienced traumatizing violent acts and they both killed strangers.

7. According to Alex Kotlowitz, how can the inner-city environment be worse than
that of a war zone?

In a war zone, people know that someday there will be a resolution that the war will end.
They also know the good people from the bad people, the friends from the enemies. Those
distinctions do not exist in some inner-city areas.

8. According to the ghetto defense, where does responsibility lie, with the person
or with society?
With society.

9. What is your opinion of the ghetto defense?

If the ghetto defense means it has something to do with claiming the defendant cannot
be held responsible for their illegal actions because they didn't know any better due to
their upbringing (or lack thereof) in the ghetto. Supposedly, they are a product of their
environment. Another variation is that they are suffering from some post-traumatic stress
disorder, the traumatic stress being their ghetto upbringing.
This argument shouldn't hold much water; there are plenty of cases where people have
risen above their impoverished, violent childhoods in the ghetto to do wonderful things.

10. If the ghetto defense has validity, should the concept be extended to anyone
who has had extremely violent experiencesEveryone can point to scars from
the pastalcoholic parents, tragic love, etc. (Paragraph 24)?
No. Because, for example many people who have alcoholic parents but could have an
appropriate position in society.

11. Imagine you were a juror judging Morgans case. How would you have voted
and why?
Answers will vary.

The Ghetto defense is not suitable for Morgan. The best place for her is the prison,
because in prison they will educate her,she will be under supervision, she will attend
anger management rehab, and also she wont kill anybody

Grief.
2. What is her second reaction?
Joyful thoughts of freedom.

3. Why hasn't she considered freedom before?

It had never seemed possible.

4. Did her husband love her? Did she love him?
Yes, in his fashion. Yes, sometimes.
5. Did he abuse her?
No.
6. Is this story mainly about women's rights, freedom, or some
other subject?
The story is about freedom because now there "would be
no powerful will bending her in that blind persistence with
which men and women believe they have a right to impose
a private will upon a fellow-creature." The operative words
are "men and women." However, freedom has almost
always been more accessible to men.
7. Why does Mrs. Mallard die?
Because she tasted freedom for a moment and now must
give it up forever.
