1.

A blower handles 1 kg/s of air at 20C and consumes a power of 15 kW. The inlet
and outlet velocities of air are 100 m/s and 150 m/s respectively. Find the exit air
temperature, assuming adiabatic conditions. Take Cp of air as 1.005 kJ/kg-K.

2. A turbine operates under study flow conditions, receiving steam at following state:
pressure 1.2 MPa, temperature 188C, enthalpy 2785 kJ/kg, velocity 33.3 m/s and
elevation 3 m. The steam leaves the turbine at the following state: pressure 20
kPa, enthalpy 2512 kJ/kg, velocity 100 m/s and elevation 0 m. If the rate of steam
flow through the turbine is 0.42 kg/s, what is the power output of the turbine in
kW?
[112.51 kW]
3. A nozzle is a device for increasing the velocity of a steadily flowing steam. At the
inlet to a certain nozzle, the enthalpy of the fluid passing is 3000 kJ/kg and the
velocity is 60 m/s. At the discharge end, the enthalpy is 2762 kJ/kg. The nozzle is
horizontal and there is negligible heat loss from it. Find (a) the velocity at exit from
the nozzle.
(b) If the inlet area is 0.1

/kg,
find the mass flow rate.(c) If the specific volume at nozzle exit is 0.498
the exit area of the nozzle. [ (a) 692.5 m/s, (b) 32.08 kg/s, (c) 0.023

4. A turbo-compressor delivers 2.33

/s of air at 0.276 MPa, 43C which is heated
at this pressure to 430C and finally expanded in a turbine which delivers 1860 kW.
During the expansion, there is a heat transfer of 0.09 MJ/s to the surroundings.
Calculate the turbine exhaust temp.
[157C]
5. A reciprocating air compressor takes in 2
/min at 0.11 MPa, 20C which
delivers at 1.5 MPa, 111C to an aftercooler where the air is cooled constant
pressure to 25C. The power absorbed by the compressor is 4.15 kW. Determine
the heat transfer in (a) The compressor (b) The cooler. State your assumptions.
[-0.17 kJ/s, -3.76kJ/s]
6. Air is expanded adiabatically in a nozzle from 20 bar to 10 bar. The temperature at
the inlet is 127C and velocity is negligible. Calculate the exit velocity of air from it.
[ 296.7 m/s]
7. A diffuser receives argon gas at 100 kPa, 27C with a velocity of 250 m/s.
Determine exit temp. if the exit velocity is 25m/s. Cp=0.52kJ/kg-K. [86.5C]
8. A turbine operating on compressed air produces a power output of 100W. The
inlet state is 400kPa, 50C and the exit state is 150kPa, -30C. Assuming the
velocities to be local, the process to be adiabatic, find the mass flow rate.
9. A diffuser has air entering at 100 kPa, 300K with a velocity of 200 m/s. The inlet
cross-sectional area of the diffuser is 100
. At the exit, the area is 800
and velocity is 20 m/s. Assuming adiabatic conditions, find the exit pressure and
temperature of air.
[124.9kPa 319.7K]
10. A blower handles 2 kg/sec of air at 27C and consumes 25kW power. If the inlet
and outlet velocities of air as 100 m/s and 150 m/s respectively , find the exit air
temperature assuming adiabatic conditions.
