vampire-inspired beauty
Pgina 1 de 15
To coincide with the release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, WGSN takes a look at the film's
influence on the beauty and grooming market. It's all about porcelain-pale complexions, blood
-red lips and big, Robert Pattinson hair.
Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga books were already best-sellers, but things went super-stellar
when the first film adaptation was released last year. The Catherine Hardwicke-directed feature was
produced for just $37m, but grossed over $380m at the worldwide box office, and has turned it's
three main stars - Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen), Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan) and Taylor
Lautner (Jacob Black) - into global superstars.
WGSN has noticed a huge trend for Twilight-inspired beauty styling on the streets, as well as on both the
autumn/winter 2009/10 and spring/summer 2010 catwalks. There is even a line of Twilight beauty
products: Luna Twilight and Volturi Twilight. Think flawless alabaster complexions, bruised eyes
and deep oxblood lips. The Cullen family of vampires in Twilight are all impossibly beautiful, so this is
all-out gothic glamour, not playing dress-up with face paints at Halloween.

The other huge trend to come out of Twilight is Robert Pattinson aka Edward Cullen's big, artfullymessed, deep bronze hairdo: a potential 'Rachel cut' (the 90s Jennifer Aniston/Friends shag) for the
noughties, if you will. It's a very British, public school look, but we imagine many boys the world over
will be growing out their crops and reaching for the volumising hairspray and wax soon, if they haven't
already. Of couse, this look isn't solely for men, there were plenty of androgynous, slash-back styles
on the spring/summer 2010 women's catwalks too.
Our recent autumn/winter 2009/10 ad campaign season overview revealed Gothic vampire to
be the key trend, in which the beauty styling was obviously a key component. Givenchy's catwalk and
accompanying ad campaign featured sultry, otherworldly creatures with blanked-out brows and
blackened red lips, while YSL's latest Holiday 2009 beauty campaign features a lustful woman who
looks ready to be bitten.
Acne's autumn/winter 2009/10 presentation featured long-limbed models with two-tone greige hair
and ghostly faces, while MAC released its long-awaited Style Black collection in September 2009, a
new goth collection described as "a celebration of going madly, deliriously noir".
And watch out for the scary Volturi clan in New Moon, the ancient overlords of the vampire world.
Unlike the vegetarian Cullen family, these undeads survive on human blood alone, hence the scarlet
eyes. Pat McGrath recreated this chilling look for Balenciaga's spring/summer 2010 show, using
neon warpaint on the inner corner of the eye. WGSN loves this technique and predicts it to cross over
into the consumer market soon.
And here are the key trends:

Twilight's vampires glow like diamonds in direct sunlight, and this was a look seen on the recent
Alexander McQueen catwalk. WGSN loved the ultraviolet pearlescent highlighter, cheek implants
and grey contouring.
The dusty blue/grey faces and hair at Gareth Pugh and Doo.Ri were another key look, creating an
ancient, undead feel.
Check out the WGSN Beauty team's Unearthly trend for spring/summer 2010. "The look is about the
evolution of beauty. It is otherworldly. It's like a moth's wing - delicate and deadly," says make-up
artist Alex Box.
Glazed porcelain glows were seen at Burberry and Viktor & Rolf's autumn/winter 2009/10 shows,
and when matched with pale blonde tumbling locks, were hugely reminiscent of Twilight character
Rosalie Cullen.

Twilight: New Moon marks the first appearance of the Volturi, a supremely powerful and deadly
vampire coven that resides in Volterra, Italy.
Balenciaga's crazed neon eye make-up perfectly encapsulates the bloodthirsty red irises of the
Volturi.
Giles Deacon, Dior, Ports 1961, Luella and Yohji Yamamoto also chose vivid red for the eyes on the
spring/summer 2010 catwalks, with Yamamoto also spraying red into models' hair the previous
season.
Others airbrushed the sockets with ghostly charcoal and bruised aubergine shadow, creating a
terrifying effect when teamed with icy blue contact lenses, la Ann-Sofie Back's autumn/winter
2009/10 show.

Not necessarily a look direct from the Twilight set, (the film is fairly tame in terms of gore), vampish
blood-stained lips have made a huge comeback of late.
For demented all-out horror, take a look at Alexander McQueen's autumn/winter 2009/10 whitedout brows and statement lips: a glossy, gloopy circle of blackened red, like a circus clown gone
really, really bad.
Though it's more of an autumn look - see House of Holland, Bottega Veneta and Vivienne Westwood perfect alabaster complexions and dried-blood-stained lips were big news at Basso & Brooke, G
Star, Rodarte and Jason Wu's spring/summer 2010 shows, with more than an element of elfin-faced
Alice Cullen about the look.
Uneven coverage and pigmentation is best, while gloss adds another dimension, seen best at
Hussein Chalayan.
This is also strong look on the street, with dried-blood lips seen at the recent London and Los
Angeles fashion weeks and at the Way Out West festival in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Bloodless lips
In complete antithesis are the lips of the unfortunate victims of a vampire's advances: parched and
bloodless.
Dior kick-started this trend on the autumn/winter 2009/10 catwalk, with gloriously glossy, bruised
purple lips that looked like they were in the process of being drained.

The spring/summer 2010 catwalks were awash with this look, with Jonathan Sauders, Brian Reyes and
Marni's models' lip colour looking like it was being sucked from within.
WGSN loved the vivid coral stained lips at Rochas, though more of a reverse Tequila Sunrise than a
Bloody Mary, perhaps.

Ok, so not strictly a vampire trend, but definitely a Twilight trend: it's the Bella Swan look. We'd
almost go as far as to say Peaches Geldof has taken a tip or two out of the Swan styling book.
Topshop's whole autumn/winter 2009/10 campaign had a teenage vampire theme, and one of the
models is pure Bella.
Tumbling, glossy brunette locks are essential, with a raised crown if possible - see Just Cavalli and innocent, au naturel make-up.
Half ponytails and Alice bands are another styling tool, but the key is to keep it a little bit
messy, in keeping with Bella's clumsy, awkward nature in the film.
For spring/summer 2010, Betty Jackson's models looked like mini prom queens, with backcombed
hair kept in place with a simple band, and Stella McCartney's look is always effortless, barefaced beauty.

And no one can deny that Robert Pattinson is one of the world's most influential men at the moment,
with thousands of fan sites dedicated to him, as well as bagging the cover of the latest issue of
AnOther Man.

Luckily for Pattinson (or unluckily), he looks exactly like his character - aside from a slightly healthier
complexion - so his bouffant hair, which he is always nervously playing with at every public
appearance, has become his trademark.
The look is quintessentially British, slightly aristocratic, and is summed up very well in the latest
Burberry ad campaign where Emma Watson - herself a star of a huge teen movie franchise - stands
with three artfully-dishevelled boys. We'd almost put money on Pattinson being signed up for a
Burberry campaign soon.
On the autumn/winter 2009/10 catwalks Gaspard Yurkievich's models rocked bouffant quiffs with
bronze airbrushing, while Paul Smith and DSquared went for similar volume.
The look was still going strong for spring/summer, with the Bottega Veneta and Herms men's
catwalks filled with big hair.

Edward Cullen's adoptive father, Carlisle, has pale blonde slashed-back hair, which, when teamed
with his alabaster skin, creates an arresting look that verges on albino.
This look was huge on the spring/summer 2010 men's catwalks, with Calvin Klein and YSL using
very blonde, very fair-skinned models.
It wasn't just the men though: it could be argued that this look stemmed from the women's catwalks,
especially Alessandro Dell'Aqua's use of golden caramel lips and eyes, just like the Cullens.

conditioning oil and rich red lip stain, and the Volturi Immortal Liquid Body Shimmer in Black
Magic or Tainted Love.
MAC's Style Black collection is also perfect for achieving vampish looks: create bruised, bloodthirsty
eyes with Mineralize black shadow with a pinkish purple pearl.
Dior, Revlon and Nars have all released to fuel everyone's nail fetish this season.
And for ultimate glamour, Chanel's new Noirs Obscurs collection takes vampish beauty to the
extreme. The products are formulated with a pigment density that is only possible due to
inclusion of the blackest available iron oxide. We love the names of the products too: Diabolic,
Forbidden and Vendetta nail polish and Demoniac eye pencil.
