NCA-9000: Glossary - Code Items

Appurtenance. An item intended to be

attached to a completed and stamped
component which has work performed on
it requiring verification by an Inspector.
Assembly. A grouping of Code items
joined by mechanical means, welding, or
brazing.
Component. A vessel, concrete reactor
vessel, concrete containment, pump,
pressure relief valve, line valve, storage
tank, piping system, or core support
structure that is designed, constructed,
and stamped in accordance with the rules
of this Section.

Containment System. An item which

forms a structure that encloses a nuclear
power system or that may be connected to
other containment items and which is
designed to provide a pressure containing
barrier for the primary purpose of
containing, within leakage limits, or of
channeling, for containment or for
controlled
disposal,
radioactive
or
hazardous effluents released from the
system.
Core
Support
Structures.
Those
structures or parts of structures which are
designed to provide direct support or
restraint of the core (fuel and blanket
assemblies) within the reactor pressure
vessel.

NCA-9000: Glossary - Code Items

Item. A product constructed under a

Certificate of Authorization (NCA-3120)
or material (NCA-1220).
Part. An item which is attached to or
becomes a portion of a component or
component support before completion
and stamping of the component or
component support. Parts have work
performed on them requiring verification
by an Inspector.
Piping Subassembly. A section of
piping system consisting of fittings and
pipes or tubes which are fabricated as
subassemblies in a shop or in the field
before being installed in a nuclear power
system.

Piping Support. A metal element which

transmits loads between the nuclear
power plant piping and the building
structure.
Piping System. A piping system is an
assembly of piping, piping supports, components, and, if applicable, component
supports of one or more Code Classes,
with a defined function as described in the
Design Specification for the piping
system.

SEC3NCA.PPT 9/96

NCA-9000: Glossary - Code Items

Construction. An all-inclusive term
comprising materials, design, fabrication, examination, testing, inspection,
and certification required in the
manufacture and installation of an item.
Fabrication. Those actions required to
manufacture components, parts, and
appurtenances. These actions may
include forming, machining, assem-bling,
welding,
brazing,
heat
treating,
examination, testing, inspection, and
certification. Fabrication does not include design.

Installation. Those actions required to

place and attach components to their
supports and join items of a nuclear
power system by welding or mechanical
means.
Repair. The process of physically
restoring a nonconformance to a condition such that an item complies with
Code requirements.
Verification. A review to ensure that
activities have been performed and
documented
in
accordance
with
applicable requirements.
