PART-B
11. Design a knuckle joint to connect two circular rods subjected to an axial tensile force of 50 kN. The rods are co-axial
and a small amount of angular movements between their axes is permissible. Design the joint and specify the
dimensions of its components. Select suitable materials for the parts.
12. Design and draw a cotter joint to support a load varying from 30kN in compression to 30kN in tension. The material
used is carbon steel for which the following allowable stresses mat be used. The load is applied statically.
Tensile stress = Compressive stress = 50 Mpa
Shear stress = 35 Mpa, and
Crushing stress = 90 Mpa. (May / June 2013)
13. Bolts are used to hold the cover plate on a pressure-vessel, which is subjected to an internal pressure varying from zero
to 2 MPa. The area over which the pressure acts may be taken to correspond to 400 mm diameter circle. The bolts are
preloaded to the extent of 1.3 times the maximum force exerted by the fluid on the cover plate. The combined stiffness
of the parts, held together by the bolt (including copper gasket), is four times the stiffness of the bolt. Following data is
given for the bolts: Ultimate tensile strength = 900 N/mm 2 Yield Strength = 700 N/mm 2 Endurance limit in bending =
300 N/mm 2 Fatigue stress concentration factor = 2.2 Factor of safety = 1.5 Number of bolts = 8 Determine the size of
the bolts assuming fine thread.
14. For supporting the travelling crane in a work shop the brackets are fixed on the steel column as shown in the figure. The
maximum load that comes on the bracket is 12 kN acting vertically at the distance of 400 mm from the face of the
column. The vertical face of the bracket is secured to a column by four bolts, in two rows (two in each row) at a
distance of 50 mm from the lower edge of the bracket. Determine the size of the bolts if the permissible value of the
tensile stress for the bolt material is 84 Mpa. Also find the cross section of the arm of the bracket which is rectangular.
(Nov/Dec 2013)

15. i) A plate 75 mm wide and 12.5 mm thick is joined with another plate by a single transverse weld and a double parallel
fillet weld as shown in Fig. 1. The maximum tensile and shear stresses are 70 MPa and 56 MPa respectively.Find the
length of each parallel fillet weld, if the joint is subjected to both static and fatigue loading. Stress concentration factor
for transverse weld is 1.5 and for parallel fillet weld is 2.7.(Apr/May 2008)

ii) A welded joint as shown in Fig. 2 is subjected to an eccentric load of 2 kN. Find the size of weld, if the maximum
shear stress in the weld is 25 MPa. (Apr/May 2008)

16. A 50 mm diameter solid shaft is welded to a flat plate as shown in fig. 1.If the size of the weld is 15 mm, find the
maximum normal and shear stress in the weld. (May/June 2014)

17. A shaft of rectangular cross section is welded to a support by means of fillet welds as shown in fig. 2. Determine the
size of the weld, if the permissible shear stress in the weld is limited to 75 N/mm 2. (Nov/Dec 2011)

18. Determine the length of the weld run for a plate of size 120 mm wide and 15 mm thick to be welded to another plate by
means of
(i) A single transverse weld and
(ii) Double parallel fillet welds when the joint is subjected to variable loads.
19. i) Design a muff coupling to connect two steel shafts transmitting 25kW at 360rpm. The shaft and key are made of plain
carbon steel 30C8 (Syt = Syc = 400N/mm2). The sleeve is made of grey cast iron FG200 (S ut = 200 N/mm2). The factor of
safety for the shafts and key is 4. For the sleeve, the factor of safety is 6 based on the ultimate strength. (Apr/May 2015)
ii) It is the required to design a square key for fixing a gear on a shaft of 30 mm diameter. The shaft is transmitting 20
KW power at 600 rpm to the gear. The key is made of steel 50C4 (S yt = 460 N/mm2) and the factor of safety is 4. For
key material, the yield strength in compression can be assumed to be equal to the yield strength in tension. Determine
the dimensions of the key. (Apr/May 2015)
20. A rigid coupling is used to transmit 60kw power at 350rpm. There are six bolts. The outer diameter of the flanges is
250 mm, while the recess diameter is 175 mm. the co efficient of friction between the flanges is 0.15. The bolts are
made of steel 45C8 (S yt = 380 N/mm2) and the factor of safety is 3. Determine the diameter of the bolts. Assume that the
bolts are fitted in large clearance. (Apr/May 2015)
