Introduction Einleitung
For each number, two forms are shown: (1) the cardinal number (Kardinalzahl 1, 2, 3...) and (2)ordinal number (Ordinalzahl - 1st, 2nd, 3rd...). In some cases
the fractional number (Bruchzahl - 1/2, 1/5, 1/100...) is also given. (To make
fractions [Brche], just add -tel or -el to the number:acht + el = achtel [an
eighth], zehn + tel = zehntel [a tenth].) Although the masculine (calendar date)

form is shown for the ordinal numbers, they can also be feminine (die), neuter
(das) or plural, depending on the noun they are used with: das erste Auto (the
first car), die zweite Tr (the second door), die ersten Menschen (the first
humans), etc.
When referring to individual numbers in German, you say "die zwei" (2) or "die
einundzwanzig" (21), short for "die Nummer/Zahl..." An example would be
naming the winning numbers for the lottery on television.

0
0 null (zero, nought)
For decimal numbers (Dezimalzahlen), German uses a comma (das Komma)
where English uses a decimal point: 0.638 (English) = 0,638 (spoken: "null
Komma sechs drei acht") or 1.08 (English) = 1,08 (spoken: "eins Komma null
acht").
German expression: in null Komma nichts (in 0,0) = in an instant, in a flash
1 eins - der erste, der 1. (first)
one o'clock ein Uhr (time, no ending on 'ein')
one/a clock eine Uhr (article, -e ending on 'ein')
(date) on the first am ersten
on 1 May, on May first, the first of May am ersten Mai, am 1. Mai
2 zwei - der zweite, der 2. (second) - halb, die Hlfte (half, one-half)
Often the alternative form zwo is used to avoid confusion with drei.

3 drei - der dritte, der 3. (third) - drittel (one-third)

4 vier - der vierte (fourth) - viertel-, das Viertel (one-fourth, quarter)
5 fnf - der fnfte (fifth)

To say "in the twenties (the '20s)" - short for "the 1920s" - in German you say "in
den zwangziger Jahren." The same method is used for all the other decades
('30s, '40s, etc.) except for the 1900s and the teens.
21 einundzwanzig - der einundzwanzigste, der 21. (the twenty-first, 21st)

1000. (the [one-]thousandth, 1000th) - tausendstel (1/1000th)
In German 1000/1,000 is written/printed as either 1000, 1.000 or 1 000 - using a
decimal point (Punkt) or a space where English uses a comma. This also
applies to all German numbers above 1,000. For decimal numbers, German
uses a comma (das Komma) where English uses a decimal point: 1.638
(English) = 1,638 (spoken: "eins Komma sechs drei acht").
1001 tausendeins - der tausenderste, der 1001. (the thousand-first, 1001st)

1002nd)
(The rest of the thousands continue in the same way.)

Years - Jahre
1100 elfhundert (year, number) or tausendeinhundert (number only)

For the years 1100 to 1999 in German, you must say the hundert, as for 1152
(elfhundertzweiundfnfzig) or 1864 (achtzehnhundertvierundsechzig).
1200 zwlfhundert (year, number) or tausendzweihundert (number only)
im Jahre: "Im Jahre 1350..." ("dreizehnhundertfnfzig" - "In the year 1350...") If
the word "Jahr" is left out, then the year is used by itself, with no "im" (in the) or
"in." Example: "He was born in 1958." = "Er ist im Jahre 1958 geboren." or "Er
ist 1958 geboren." Similarly: "Kolumbus hat 1492 Amerika entdeckt."
("vierzehnhundertzweiundneunzig" - "Columbus dicovered America in 1492.")
1800 achtzehnhundert (year, number)
1900 neunzehnhundert (year, number)
2000 zweitausend (year, number; more below)
AD, BC, BCE/CE: To convey the Christian calendar's use of AD (anno domini,
"year of our Lord") and BC (before Christ), German uses n.Chr. (nach Christus,
AD) and v.Chr. (vor Christus, BC). BCE/CE (Before the/Common Era) was used
mostly in East Germany: v.u.Z.(vor unserer Zeitrechnung, BCE/BC)
and u.Z. (unserer Zeitrechnung, CE/AD).

2000
2000 zweitausend - der zweitausendste, der 2000. (the two-thousandth,
2000th)
2001 zweitausendeins - der zweitausenderste, der 2001. (the twothousand-first, 2001st)

"In the year 2001" can be spoken/written in German as "im Jahre 2001" or "im
Jahr 2001" ("zweitausendeins"). If the word "Jahr" is left out, then the year is
used by itself, with no "im" (in the) or "in." Example: "He was born in (the year)
2001." = "Er ist im Jahre 2001 geboren." or "Er ist 2001 geboren."
2002 zweitausendzwei - der zweitausendzweite, der 2002. (the twothousand-first, 2002nd)
2004 zweitausendvier - der zweitausendvierte, der 2004. (the twothousand-fourth, 2004th)
The rest of the thousands continue in the same way up to...
9999 neuntausendneunhundertneunundneunzig (9.999/9 999)

10,000 and up
10,000 zehntausend (10.000/10 000) - der zehntausendste, der 10.000. (the
ten-thousandth, 10,000th)
20,000 zwanzigtausend (20.000/20 000) - der zwanzigtausendste, der
20.000. (the twenty-thousandth, 20,000th)
100,000 hunderttausend (100.000/100 000) - der hunderttausendste, der
100.000.(the hundred-thousandth, 100,000th)

1.000.000. (the millionth)
2,000,000 (2 million) zwei Millionen (2.000.000) - der zweimillionste, der
2.000.000.(the two-millionth)

In German one million is eine Million, but two million is zwei Millionen ("two
millions").
billion eine Milliarde - der milliardste (the billionth)
An American billion is a German Milliarde. A German Billion is an American
"trillion."
trillion eine Billion - der billionste (the trillionth)

German Personal Pronouns

The German personal pronouns (er, ich, sie, es, du, wir, etc.) work in much
the same way as their English equivalents (he, I, she, it, you, we, etc.). When
we get to verb conjugation later, these words will be a key element that you
should know very well. Even here we have included some sample verb phrases
for many of the pronouns.
The pronouns listed below are in the nominative (subject) case. We will talk
about their other forms and different cases in a later lesson.
A special word about the "you" pronouns!
German, much more than English, makes a clear distinction between
formal you (Sie) and familiaryou (first name, du) in social situations. (Unlike
English, most European and other languages also have both a formal and a
familiar you.) In this regard, Germans tend to be more formal than Englishspeakers and use first names only after a long period of getting to know each
other (sometimes years). This is a good example of how language and
culture are intertwined, and you need to be aware of this to avoid embarassing
yourself and others. In the table below, the familiaryou forms (du, ihr) are
marked with the abbreviation "fam." to distinguish them from the
formalyou (Sie).

NOTE: German has three different forms of sie! Often the only way to tell which
one is meant is to notice the verb ending and/or the context in which the
pronoun is used. Even the capitalized Sie(you, formal) is tricky if it appears at
the beginning of a sentence. Lower-case sie can mean both "she" and
"they": sie ist (she is), sie sind (they are).
Also read the article and try our self-scoring quiz on du and Sie that is included
in You and thou,Sie und du.
