TUTORIAL

Question 1
In the magnetic circuit shown below, the relative permeability of the ferromagnetic material is
1200. Neglect magnetic leakage and fringing. All dimensions are in centimeters, and the
magnetic material has a square cross sectional area. Determine the air gap flux, the air gap
flux density, and the magnetic field intensity in the air gap.

Question 2
For the magnetic circuit shown below, the parameters are given as:
N = 400 turns
Mean core length, lc = 50cm
Air gap length lg = 1mm
Cross sectional area, Ac = Ag = 15 cm2
Relative permeability of core r = 3000
i=1A

Find,
a) Flux and flux density in the air gap
b) Inductance of the coil

Question 3
Figure below shows a ferromagnetic core with mean path length is 40 cm. There is a small
gap of 0.05cm in the structure. The cross sectional area of the core is 12cm2, with relative
permeability of 4000 and the supply coil has 400 turns. Assuming that fringing increases the
effective area of the air-gap by 5%. Find
a) Total reluctance of the flux path
b) The current required to produce a flux density of 0.5T in the air-gap

Question 4
The coil shown below has 250 turns and is wound on a silicon sheet steel. The inner and outer
are 20 and 25 cm, respectively and the toroidal core has a circular cross section. For a coil
current of 2.5 A, find
a) The magnetic flux density at the mean radius of the toroid
b) The inductance of the coil, assuming that the flux density within the core is uniform
and equal to that at the mean radius (B is given as 1.225 T)

Question 5
A silicon sheet steel toroidal core (with circular cross section area) shown in figure (Fig 5.1)
below is used to build an inductor.
a) Calculate the coil current required to produce a core flux density of 1.3T at the mean
radius of the toroid.
b) Calculate the core flux in webers. Assume uniform flux density.
c) A 2mm wide air gap is made at the mean radius of the toroid (across A A),
determine the new coil current required to maintain a core flux density as in (i).
Briefly comment on the results obtained.
d) Determine the inductance of the coil for condition (i) and (iii). Comment on the results
obtained.

Question 6
A steel ring of magnetic material has a mean diameter of 20cm and a cross sectional area of
25cm2. An air gap of 2mm length is cut across the ring. The ring is wound with 500 turns and
carrying a current of 1.5 A. Neglecting the leakage and fringing effect, determine the flux
density in the core, total reluctance of the magnetic circuit and relative permeability of the
steel if the flux in the air gap is 1 mWb. Determine
a) The total reluctance of the magnetic circuit
b) The relative permeability of the steel
c) The flux density in the core
