Fall 2015 Syllabus for New Students

Course Overview

Wearefacingachallengeinthearts:weneedanewgenerationofleaders.Weneedaready
supplyofprepared,pragmatic,experiencedandcommittedleadersinartsandcultural
organizations.Leaderswhohavevisionandcreativity.Leaderswhocanbringasenseof
innovationandentrepreneurialexcitementtotheirwork.Leaderswhocanbalancetherealities
ofwhatiswiththepossibilitiesofwhatcouldbe.Byenrollinginthiscourse,youhavetaken
thefirststeptobecomingoneoftheartsleadersweneedbyactingintentionallyonyourideas.

TheLoganArtsLeadershipInstituteatInterlochenCenterfortheArtshelpsstudents
understandthekindsofexperiencesandstudyrequiredtobenewleadersinthearts.Logan
Artsstrivestocreateacadreofnewleaderswhowillunderstandandwanttoplaysignificant
leadershiprolesintheartsandculture,educationandnonprofitorganizations.TheLoganArts
classroomistheworldofthearts,anditsinstructorsaretheleadersofthoseorganizations
manyofwhomwillappearinwebinarsandvideosthroughoutthiscourse.Theyareemerging
leadersandthosewhohaveledfordecadestheycomefromallartsareasandmanykindsof
experience.

TheLoganArtscoursefornewstudentscanbeaccessedthroughtheNewStudentsfolderon
Haiku.Itiscomprisedofsixlessonsthatexploretopicsonartsleadershiptoday.Eachlesson
containsreadings,assignments,discussionsandwebinars.Itisrecommendedthatyou
completeallreadings,assignmentsanddiscussionsbytheenddateofthelesson(outlinedin
theschedulebelow).Youwillalsobeaskedtocompleteassignmentsthatwillconnectyour
experiencesandlearningstoartsleadershipinyourowncommunities.Engagementinsuch
activitieswillhelpyouthinkcriticallyandcreativelyaboutcurrentissuesintheartsandbuild
yourownleadershipcapacities.

Course Objective

Tointroducehighschoolandundergraduatestudentstotheconceptsofartsleadershipandthe
largeissuescommunication,leadershiptraitsandstyles,generationalchanges,problem
solving,organizationalanalysisthatwillprovideopportunitiesforthinking,reflectionand
actionstobecometheartsleadersofthefuture.

Participation

ParticipationinLoganArtswillrequiretwotothreehoursofcommitmentperweekinindividual
participation.Therearenogradeshowever,themoreyouputintothiscourse,themoreyouwill
getoutofit.Thosewhocompleteallreadingsandassignmentswillreceiveacertificateof
completion.Allcoursereadings,assignmentsanddiscussionswillbeassignedviaHaiku.

Reading Assignments

AllreadingmaterialswillbemadeavailableonHaiku.Readingswillshowupaslinksineach
lessonfolder.Ifanewreadingisadded,youwillreceiveanotificationonHaiku.Youare
encouragedtocompleteallreadingsastheyinformalldiscussionandassignmentsinaddition
toyourownpersonalleadership.Completingthereadingswillhelpusdevelopanongoing
dialogueandconfrontpertinentissuesofartsleadership.

Course Assignments

AllassignmentsareviewableineachlessonfolderandcanbesubmittedonHaiku.
Assignmentsareoptional,butweencourageyoutoparticipateandaddtoyourLoganArts
experiencebycompletingthem.Ifassignmentsarenotsubmittedontimetheymaynotbe
sharedwiththerestofclassduringdiscussionsandliveinteractions.

Resource Room

TheResourceRoomfolderonHaikucontainsarticles,books,videosandpodcaststo
supplementyourcoursematerialsandLoganArtsexperience.Theseresourcesareaccessible
tobothNewandReturningstudents.Ifyoucomeacrossanarticle,book,videooraudiostory
thatyouthinkshouldbeaddedtotheResourceRoom,messageLaurenGreeneonHaiku,or
emailleadership@interlochen.org.

Course Schedule

Eachlessonisdesignedwithutmostflexibilitytoaccommodatethebusyschedulesofour
students.Youwillseethateachlessonhasastartandanenddateandlastsapproximatelytwo
weeks.Itisrecommendedthatallreadings,activitiesanddiscussionsbecompletedbytheend
date.ItemsontheschedulearesubjecttochangeyouwillbenotifiedonHaikuifanychanges
occur.
