Origin
The English language as we know it today originated in the British Isles.
Until the 4th century BC in the British Isles there were two languages:
The Celtic language, the native language of the islands and was spoken by
the common people.
And the Latin language, imposed by the conquering Romans and used it in
education, government and written language. It was a language of prestige.
From the year 450 before Christ, several Germanic tribes expelled the
Romans from Britain, and conquered the Celts.
There were four Germanic tribes who settled permanently in the islands:
Angles, Saxons and Jutes.
