Dear District 33 Toastmasters,

We have achieved distinguished or
better status as a district for the
second time in a row. I hope you are
celebrating this wonderful success
with me. It was with great pride in all
of you that we were able to walk
across the stage in Las Vegas at our
International conference and receive
accolades from our Past International
President Mohammed Murad on
behalf of all of you. Thank you District
33 for a job well done! It was an
extreme team effort and I thank each
and every one of you for your
contributions that made the difference
for District 33.
Our District Mission is to build new
clubs and support all clubs in achieving
excellence. We want to keep this in
mind as we set goals for this new
Toastmaster year. Building new clubs
gives us the opportunity to share the
gift of Toastmasters with brand new
members. Additionally, it provides us
with leadership opportunities that will
enrich our lives in a dynamic way. As a
professional, it has been my
experience that teaching someone
how to be proficient in a skill really
helps me to sharpen my own skills. As
a result, relationships are built along
with leadership and it is no different

with our program. This is truly how

leaders are made through one
opportunity at a time. I urge you to
seize the moment and take advantage of
an opportunity to serve as a sponsor,
mentor, or club coach for a new or
struggling club. You will be pleasantly
surprised at how the opportunity will
impact and shape you as a leader.
At our recent District Executive
Committee meeting, the District
leadership decided to continue the
legacy and complete whatever is
necessary to become distinguished or
better for the third consecutive year in a
row. In doing so, we will firmly establish
our District, once again, as one that is
capable and committed to delivering a
quality experience to any and all of our
members.
This year, we celebrate 42 years as a
District. Commitment to Excellence is
our focus for the year. Excellence is
defined as something of superior quality
of its kind. Fellow District 33
Toastmasters: come along beside me
and let's work together to be the best
we can be.
District 33, together we can do this!!
Best regards,
Debby Baker, DTM District 33 Director

District 33 Program Quality Director

Jamuna Ramnath, DTM
As we embark upon our new term with the past two consecutive successful years of
Distinguished District and more, we are positive and determined to carry that torch of
success for this year, and for the future! I want to emphasize member engagement, club
quality, retention of members and consistency in our club operational procedures. I believe
in building a healthy leadership at each level to set the stage for our success. We need to
develop a culture among our members and leaders fulfilling our roles and responsibilities to
work the distinguished recognition program effortlessly, but with an urge as a necessity and
not as an option.
Two months into our term, I see outstanding progress towards achieving our measurable goals. As a
District, we have completed our qualifying goals successfully, with training 85% of our district leaders.
Training for Club Officers: Overall, across the District, we have achieved greater than 90% training of our
club officers. Notably, Division C topped all divisions with more than 70% of its clubs reporting the training of
seven officers. Divisions D and F reported that 100% of its clubs trained 4 or more officers. What an
achievement! Terrific accomplishment for our Division and Area Directors!!
To help in achieving our measurable goals well in advance to earn Distinguished Club Status, we have
implemented District Incentive Programs to reward clubs that complete goals every quarter. Visit the District
33 website to review and download them.
It is truly amazing to see the top-ranking clubs that have already met the very important goal, of the DCP, of
a net growth of 5 members from the July base: Whitehatters Ovation Club, Talk Abouts@Nusil, Mission
Chapter Toastmaster Club, Simi Valley Toastmasters Club and Amgen Noon Talkers Club.
Let us set high-bar objectives and work diligently to exceed them. It will pay us Big Time!

District 33 Club Growth Director

Guy Dawson, DTM
District 33 is poised to begin a new era over the next couple of years as it prepares Southern Nevada
for the development of its own district. The birth of a district in Southern Nevada is a natural
progression in the expansion of the Toastmasters organization that will create opportunities for
thousands of new people who can benefit from the education and personal growth that we all enjoy.
The leaders of Southern Nevada are embracing the task of developing 28 new clubs to become an
independent district. Kay Collis, DTM, PDG, PRA, is heading a team of Champions who will strategize
and facilitate the growth of this new Toastmasters district. We are also committed to continue
delivering outstanding educational experiences to the existing members of our clubs.
As District 33 builds a new district, it will be critical to reinforce the strength of the Central California
clubs. I was inspired by the unity that the leaders of Divisions A, B, E, F, G and J displayed at a recent
officers training event. There are untapped opportunities to develop new clubs within each of the
divisions of Central California. We are working together to bring them to fruition. Central California
is ready, willing and able to continue to fulfill District 33s mission of building new clubs and
supporting all clubs in achieving excellence.
Central California and Southern Nevada share a rich history of collaborative efforts and
experiences. We will continue to learn and grow together.
Our district has audacious goals of high achievement in 2015/2016 and I am thrilled to
be a part of this hyper-focused team. I believe that you will all be pleasantly surprised at
the results that we produce this year. Lets keep shooting for the stars.

District 33s Newest Accredited Speaker

by Ann Hill, DTM
Ellie Kay is the president of Shop Talk Toastmasters, the
author of 14 books, a popular speaker, a corporate educator, a
spokesperson and the mother of seven children. And, Kay is the
newest Accredited Speaker of Toastmasters International. "It was
an incredible honor to be the first woman from District 33 to receive
the Accredited Speaker designation and to share it with the seven
men who earned it before me. I look forward to the opportunity to
help others in their speaking journey, even as I have been
encouraged by so many in this pathway to Accredited Speaker.
Kays engaging inspirational keynote presentation, Heroes
at Home, was delivered as if the audience were military service
members. They were engaged by her numerous stories and sense of
humor.

Toastmasters International president, Jim Kokocki, awarded Kay her new member badge and plaque during the
World Championship of Public Speaking contest at the 2015 Toastmasters International Convention.
Professionally, Kay is a consumer finance consultant, known as Americas Family Financial Expert. She has
worked with Fortune 100 companies, such as Wal-Mart and Procter and Gamble, where she gives advice on how
consumers can make the most of every dollar. Kay has been married for nearly 25 years to Bob, a former Stealth
fighter pilot; they have three sons currently serving in the Marines and the Army.
From the American Embassy in China to the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) International Convention, she has
keynoted or led hundreds of events and financial seminars. A popular speaker, Kay has even pinch-hit for two first
ladies, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush, at special military gatherings. She is frequently sought out by journalists,
appearing on all the major networks and in popular publications. Kay is respected by both the military and civilian
communities, earning top awards from both sectors.
Why join Toastmasters?
I joined Toastmasters for two main reasons: to practice new material in a warm and friendly environment before
presenting it to large groups. Secondly, I want to help other speakers move from good to great when it comes to
their presentation skills.
The last run-through I had with my AS speech in front of my own club, Shoptalk, was at about 90% of my
capacity for excellence. I knew I needed to hit 99% in order to pass the AS in Las Vegas. My club suggested I
change the introduction from quoting statistics to one that was more personable. So I practiced a new, two minute
introduction for two hours and surprised my husband and daughter in the audience by introducing THEM as my
Hero at Home and my Hero. The new introduction absolutely worked better and I was grateful to my Shop Talk
family for the suggestion.
How did you get to the point where you could speak and present like that?
I practice, practice, practice. Vince Lombardi said, Practice doesnt make perfect. Only perfect practice makes
perfect. In fact, I think that even if a speaker is very good, you can still tell if a speech hasnt been adequately
practiced when they present. The magic number for me is three. You have to present your entire speech, ahead of
time, in practice at least three times if you want to be at your own average. If you want to be good, you need to go
over it at least five times, crafting and improving along the way. If you want to be great, youll go over it 10 times.
If you are in a competition for that speech, youll need to present it at least 100 times before the competition, even
if you are only presenting it to your bathroom mirror!
The Toastmasters International Accredited Speaker Program is designed for professional speakers who combine expert knowledge in a
particular subject with mastery of the spoken word, making them sought-after experts in their respective fields.

Kay after receiving her AS
designation.

Division AAwesome in Every Way!

Transforming ourselves through

Toastmasters and Teamwork

Two months into the 2015-2016 season, Toastmasters

membership is already paying dividends in Division A!
Brenda Avadian, ATMG, ALB and Eric Riddle, DTM, both
members of High Desert Toastmasters, published their
book, STUFFology 101: Get Your Mind Out of the
Clutter. Their book was the #1 non-fiction audible
audiobook for the week ending 9/5/15. More than
7,000 copies were sold in ONE DAY.
Robert Davis, High Desert Toastmasters, is using his
acquired Toastmasters skills to promote himself as he
pursues a seat on the Antelope Valley High School
Board.
Rajpal Kahlon, Talents Unlimited Toastmasters, is
seeking an elected position as the Supervisor of Los
Angeles Countys Fifth District.
John Stratton, ACS, ShopTalk Toastmasters, was a
performer in Gracefest 2015. (A premier Antelope
Valley music and message festival, benefiting kids
charities.) Table Topics helped him become a more
confident speaker between songs during his
performance.
JoAnn Gardner, Speakers in the Wind Toastmasters,
joined the club to become more relaxed and
spontaneous on stageto display more of her vibrant
personality. Her weekly practice during club meetings
manifested during her poetry event in July 2015.
Ellie Kay, ACS, ALB, AS, ShopTalk Toastmasters, earned
the Accredited Speaker designation at the 2015
Toastmasters International Convention. She became
the first female Accredited Speaker in District 33.
Dana LaMon, DTM, AS, WCPS, Talents Unlimited and
Speakers in the Wind Toastmasters, was a featured
speaker during the 2015 Toastmasters International
Convention. His topic was Making the Toastmasters
Experience Meaningful.

It is an honor to serve as the 2015-2016 Division B

Director and to follow so many great leaders, like
Martha Navarrete, who have gone on to serve this
District in a higher capacity.
I have four outstanding Area Directors whose efforts
started off the Toastmasters year with a very successful
TLI. All the area contests promise to be fantastic
events.
As an individual who has been a Toastmaster for many
years, while belonging to several clubs, I have seen the
transforming effect of the Toastmasters' program in
speaking and leadership skills. I also believe that all the
club officer roles are critical to each clubs success.
Only through teamwork can clubs grow and the
members achieve their goals.
My goal over this year is for me, and my Area Director
team, to nurture and provide opportunities for these
values in the Division B clubs.
Only through
transformation and teamwork can we achieve our
personal goals and fulfill that Commitment to
Excellence that is the 2015-2016 focus for our District.

Division C is working closely with Divisions D and H to

ensure the creation of new clubs in the Southern
Nevada area and no club losses. We all have a
Commitment to Excellence!

The Dynamos of Division D have a Commitment to

Excellence to our members and clubs.

The six new Area Directors are off to a fantastic start.

They are making club visits, installing club officers and
have ensured that at least four officers were trained for
each club in Division C. They are all providing support
to their clubs and serving our Toastmasters
membership with a smile!
On June 30, 2015, Division C boasted 14 clubs (56%)
that were Distinguished or better; Eight (8) clubs were
Presidents Distinguished, Five (5) clubs were Select
Distinguished and One (1) was Distinguished.
Current events in Division C: We have six Area Contests
between September 11th and October 3rd. The Division

Facebook page and District 33 Google Calendar. The
Division contest flyer can be found on the Division C

We have completed our club officer training and

are proud to announce that 84.4% of all officers
have been trained. All clubs in Division D have at
least 4 officers trained and 10 of 21 clubs had 100%

support and completing their club visits. Many
clubs are hosting Open Houses leading up to the
October dues renewal. Aces of Inspiration Blue

guests respectively.
The area contests were so much fun with pirates,
icons from the 80s, and an abundance of hats
making appearances.

October 10 at the Henderson Convention Center.

Exciting news in Division C: The BDG Toastmasters had

DYNAMIC DISTINGUISHED DISTRICT 33

By Immediate Past District 33 Governor, Katy

District
Toastmasters
of
Distinguished
District
33,
Congratulations! The 2014-2015 year is now in the
Spotlight
history books. We achieved a strong showing, with club
growth of 9 clubs to a new high of 211 clubs. Our
membership grew by over 6% for the second year in a
row with over half of our clubs achieving Distinguished or better.
We had so much fun at both of our Conferences, joined by our International President
Mohammed Murad, our Past International President Michael Notaro, World Champion Lance
Miller, and other wonderful inspiring and informative speakers. We played with the hot air
balloon and bi-plane images, as we soared with close to 1,900 new members, 5,770 renewing
members and 860 educational achievements, including 23 members reaching the pinnacle of
Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM).
Distinguished
Toastmasters
Dana and Jesse Oakley III hosted
the International Convention at
Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
We enjoyed a well-organized,
full of fun event, with our own
World Champion Dana LaMon as
one of the major speakers,
sharing life stories and tips for
making our club meetings
memorable.
Many of our
members showed our strength
on stage, proudly holding our
Distinguished banner. Special shout out to our printer, Distinguished Toastmaster Steve
Goldstein, who contributed delightful artwork all year long!
Now what? Now we wipe the slate clean, and start the adventure all over. Our new top
three and the team of 60 leaders have designed a year full of interesting and exciting events
open houses, contests and conferences. Each club is also starting their Distinguished Club
Program fresh. Working with our Area Directors, we are focusing on bringing creative ideas to
enhance our Toastmaster meetings.
Lets each of us make the 2015-2016 year special set a goal and an action plan to get it done.
Complete at least one educational. Mentor a new member. Bring creativity to your Table
Topics. What else? You decide. See you in November in Santa Maria, if not before!

In Division F we are Enabling Dreams!

LEADERSHIP
I joined Toastmasters in 1998; I did not know what
to expect from the experience of being a member
of Club 9797 Speakeasy Toastmasters. I was made
to feel comfortable and the program was explained
to me. I was immediately assigned a Mentor. To
learn about Toastmasters I volunteered to be of
service to my club, I held different officer positions
which gave me more opportunity to interact with
other club members at Officer Training, Area and
Division Contests, Of course, there is some
traveling, which gives more interest of different
locations where the Toastmasters functions are
being held. I decided I would seek out a different
level of Leadership by volunteering to serve as
Area E1 Governor (Now known as Area Director).
This opened up more interest for me applying
different skills that I had learnt when employed in
the private sector. I was open to learning what
Toastmasters had put in place for their District
Leaders so much so I stepped up and ran for
Division Governor (Now known as Division
Director). I was elected for the term of 2014-2015;
I am still learning and will Pay it Forward towards
New potential Leaders that wish to get involved on
a journey with Toastmasters.
Sincerely,
Julie Boyce. ACG, ALB
Division E Director

Why do we want to become more effective

communicators and leaders? Because we have
dreams! Some join Toastmasters to learn how to
speak without stuttering or having their heart
pound out of their chest. Others stay because they
have a dream of becoming a CEO or community
leader, or doing a better job of selling their services
to clients. Many just enjoy the fun of telling and
listening to great stories with friends over dinner.
According to Toastmasters International, the #1
reason people join Toastmasters is to build
confidence in whatever they want to do! In
Division F 2015-2016, we are sharing how
Toastmasters enables us and others to make
dreams come true.
Last year, Division F was Presidents Distinguished.
This year we aim to excel and exceed with more
clubs, more members, and more clubs
Distinguished or better. Our clubs are creating
Club Success Plans and using the Moments of Truth
module to create a supportive experience for
members and guests. So far this term, Division F
has 100% officer lists turned in on time and 100%
of clubs with at least the minimum 4 officers
trained. More than half of Division F clubs excelled
with all 7 officers trained! Several clubs are
striving for the District 33 first quarter
Commitment to Excellence Award and are
participating in the Open House contests. The
theme for our September 25th Division F Fall
Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contest is
Dream Big. In Division F, we are Dreaming Big
and Enabling Dreams with a District 33
Commitment to Excellence.

Hello to District 33, especially Division H!

Can you even believe it is September already??
Yes, here in the Central Valley in Fresno, Tulare and
Kings Counties, time is flying by. Division G is flying
forward as well. Our Core Values this year are to
SOAR . . .
Support and strengthen each member,
Open and enrich new and established Clubs,
Aspire to create strong leaders and
Reach to exceed desired goals
and we do intend to SOAR.
My hat is off to the Area Directors, Susan
Smilanich, Sam Wong, Rose Scott and Paul Laufer
as they strive to move their clubs to achieving their
goals early in this 2015-2016 year. How are we
Soaring so far???? Support and strengthen each
member---Directors are busy, consistently visiting
their Clubs offering guidance to members. Open
and enrich new Clubs---- We have a new Corporate
Club launching on October 8th in Clovis with 3
more twinkles in the works for this year and
reaching for more.
Aspire to create strong
leaders---First Round Officers Club Training was a
huge success with 80% of officers being trained.
Reach to exceed goals---We have formed an
awesome Division Council that is ready, willing and
waiting to jump in and assist with any and all tasks
or projects ahead. Division G is focused on
reaching 85% Distinguished Clubs by year end.
Added BONUSwe have fun doing it all. Yeswe
have lofty goals!
How else can we expect to
SOAR???
Monica Story, ACB-ALB
Division G Director

This is the dawn of a new Toastmasters year

and what an honor it is to be the first Division
H Director. I am surrounded by some of the
best talent in Las Vegas, NV. The Division H
team members are: JR Wilson (H-1), Lauren
Scheer (H-2), Barbara Westhoff (H-3), Ben
Weeks (H-4) and James Russell (H-5).
This is a pivotal time in Las Vegas with the
opportunity on the near horizon to become a
separate district. I look forward to helping and
learning from the talented individuals working
on making this happen.
What is in store for Division H? My vision is
all Division H clubs at 20+ members and
offering the best quality meetings possible.
We can and will accomplish this by tapping into
the wonderful talent in our clubs. Each of the
Division H clubs is different, not only in time,
day and location of the meeting, but also in
themes and atmosphere.
Ive learned from listening to Lance Miller,
the main reasons an individual becomes a
member of Toastmasters is: FUN, FRIENDSHIP
and Self-improvement.
Following this line of thinking: please come
join The Division H Team as we focus on FUN,
FRIENDSHIP and reaching our AWARD goals.

The Power of Collaboration Creates A Rich Experience For All
The first 60 days of this Toastmasters year have come and gone in a flash.
Division Director, Alan Mann (of Division B - West Ventura County) and I are hard at
work on several joint projects to support local clubs and members this year. Some of your club officers
may tell you about several options in the area that were made available to them as they trained to serve
you. This is just the beginning.
There are more joint efforts in the making, each of which will be revealed further as their value comes to
fruition.
The power of collaboration does not have to remain at the division level. I invite EVERY Toastmaster to
consider and seek collaborative efforts with a fellow Toastmaster or pave the way to a collaborative event
with another club. Have you thought about arranging to visit another club and having another member
visit yours? How about leading the way for a joint meeting with another club? There are a number of
possibilities! As you come up with events where you can invite guests and other Toastmasters, feel free to
share the flyers for such efforts with your Area Director or myself. We look forward to sharing as many as
we can at http://www.divisionjd33.org and http://d33.toastmastersdistricts.org/Division_J.html!

My View on the 2015 Toastmasters International Convention

by Jesse Oakley III DTM, PDG
When I think about the 2015 Toastmasters International Convention in Las Vegas this past
August 2015, I can think of nothing but great memories.
From the time I was asked to chair (in 2014) to Saturday evenings celebration on August 15,
2015, the experiences, moments, and memories that I have for this event, will be with me for a very
long time.
Many Toastmasters from all over the world came to this event, and they were treated to
something that was very dynamic. From the Opening Ceremonies, to the educationals, to the speaking
contests, to the celebration, everyone had an awesome time at this Convention.
Assisting the Toastmasters International staff with volunteers provided a challenge. It was a
challenge that Dana and I were glad to embrace. Without the teamwork, effort, and participation of
the 250+ volunteers, the success of this Convention would not have been possible.
Additionally, huge thanks go to the following Committee Chairs that helped captained the
volunteer teams for the events:
Kay Collis, Guy Dawson, Lorrie Linnert-Dunford, Bethanie Gist, Steve Goldstein, Arlene Jayme,
Rosemary Lato, Jan Lewellyn, Ken Richardson, Emma Santa, Cristina Scoble, Phyllis Tribby, Flora
Turner, Barbara Westhoff, and Robert Westhoff.
Without this amazing group of committee chairs, the success of this Convention would not have
been possible.
It does take a community to put together something of this magnitude, and I can honestly say
that I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the Las Vegas, District 33, and the all of the
Toastmasters communities from around the world.

Resources from Toastmasters International

Did you attend the 2015 Toastmasters International Convention in
Las Vegas in August? If so, were you aware that there was an APP
for that?
Yes, Toastmasters is leaping into the future with apps for Smart
Phones. There was a remarkable social app that allowed
attendees of the Convention to post messages and photos and
connect with other attendees of the convention. It was fun to
see what people were saying about each event as it was
happening and to see on the spot photos, especially for events
that I was unable to attend for one reason or another. I hope
they continue this tradition. I look forward to next year's
convention in Washington, DC to connect with attendees there.
I am eagerly anticipating getting together with some DC locals
to see the town.
Toastmasters International also has another app,
currently in the BETA testing stage, which will be found in the
App store. It is called TI App. At the moment, it must be
opened through the app Test Flight. This TI App is
AMAZING!! It has the following fabulous options for keeping
track of these roles in your clubs: Ah Counter, Grammarian and
Timer. You login with your TI website login and it links to the
clubs of which you are a member. Tap on "Change Clubs" to
use the app for each club. Your members' names are already
there! And, it has a History tab where it keeps track of all
information you have input. Heres a link to an explanation:

Several years ago, Toastmasters International introduced a whole new set of logos and colors, called
Branding. They recommend, technically demanded, that all clubs everywhere use these approved logos
and colors. But, do you know where to find them? Go to the TI website, Toastmasters.org, click on
Leadership Central, then click on Logos, Images and Templates. The above link will take you directly to
that page.
If you want a logo or any of the Design Elements, such as the Rays or Call-outs (you have seen these
used in this newsletter), then click on Logo and Design Elements. To view the item, click on one of the
three options under the title of the item. For example, to get the TI color logo, go to the Logo column and
click (.jpg) next to the first word, "color." This will open the logo in a new window. To use this logo, right
click and save it to your computer. You can use any of the Design Elements or Templates the same way. To
use them in a document, go to the Insert tab, click on Picture. Search for the item you saved and click
Open. It will insert into the document.
There are also many options for Stationery, Newsletters and Flyers available to clubs. Click on the item you
wish to use, it will open as a PDF form. Enter your clubs information and print. Voila, instant flyer. You
can also save these to your computer for later use. Have fun playing with the Logos and Design Elements
and feel free to contact me via email with any questions penguinlady1@cox.net. Thanks.
