ANREW GOODWINS THEORY

The main person for the narrative theories in music would be Andrew
Goodwin. His theory mainly explores:

Thought beats

Narrative

Performance

Star Image

Relation of Visuals to the song

Technical Aspects (composition)

RESEARCH TAKEN FROM A SLIDESHOW:

Music videos more often than not tend to include a

demonstration of typical genre characteristics.

Most video can also link to film genres; this is known as

intertextuality.

There are frequent references to the notion of looking and

voyeuristic treatment of the female body basically references to
feminism.

There is a concise relationship between music and visuals.

The record label which the artist is assigned to tends to

have certain demands. They often include the need for lots of close ups
of the artist and the artist will have a visual style which persists across
their work.

There are often intertextual references to films, TC

programmes and other music videos, etc.

Andrew Goodwin believes that there are 5 things that basically make a good
music video:
1. Thought through beat this simply means how the lyrics are
interpreted through the video, and what the lyrics actually mean. For

example, in the song were doing, there is a line: Size me up, I know
you did. Care for you, you know I did. From this we can interpret that
they grew up together and she clearly cared for him. The deeper
meaning could be that she actually cared for him and he knew that.
But he mistook her care to be a liking towards him.
2. Relationship between songs and visuals this is basically how the
song was created through what we see. For example, camera shots,
locations, actors and acting, etc. Using the same example in point one,
we decided to have a shot where hes checking her out and she looks
and him and smiles -when she says Size me up, I know you did he
checks her out, and when it says Care for you, you know I did shes
going to smile at him. This is a good example of how song is used to
create a relationship between the visuals.
3. Performance and narrative of the song performance is basically
shots of the singer/performer actually singing or playing an instrument,
whereas the narrative is the actor actually acting out the lyrics of the
song.
4. Technical aspects this mainly involves how the camera is used and
how the video is edited. Also, lighting and colour is a technical aspect
that can help create meanings within the visuals, linking it to the lyrics.
5. Star Image the protagonist (main actor/actress) is also an important
part of any music video. It makes the protagonist centre of attention
giving the artist/performer to show the way the protagonist is being
portrayed.
