Dear Leigh,

Thank you for your letter. I appreciate the seriousness with which the University is taking our demand
for significant reform in the human subject review process. When we get the reports, not only do staff
and myself read them, but I also request our Senate Counsel review these.
I have been advised by Counsel that the reports meet our requirements and they believe the reports
indicate the University is enacting significant reforms. I am clear, based on the audit and all of our own
findings that previous practices did not uphold the highest standards. I understand you have further
questions. I am not going to submit your questions. I am focused on providing oversight so that the
University complies with our demand and expectation for ethical excellence. I am copying my colleagues
on this so that if they see this differently they can act accordingly.
