used for writing were the skin of birch, the leaves of palm trees and the copper plates. In the
Nile delta, reeds grow in plenty. In local language, the reed is called papyrus. The Egyptians
took stems of papyrus plant, then peeled and flattened them. When dry, a sheet of papyrus
was made and they could write on it.
But it was not paper. Paper was first developed in China. From there the art of paper

March 21 is celebrated as the World Forest Day. North East India comprises of eight small

reckless felling of trees here and the rest of the country is creating many problems. According
to the rules of the forest departments, for every tree felled, ten should be planted. Are we even
planting one tree?
The survival of flora and fauna in India is in danger due to the exploitation of forests.
Cutting forests in hilly areas like Darjeeling and Uttarakhand worsened the soil and eroded the
upper layer of fertile soil. Heavy buildings of concrete came up along the banks of the rivers.
Landslides killed thousands while flash floods drowned thousands and thousands of helpless
pilgrims and tourists who were swept away in the swirling waters on June 15, 2013. This
teaches us not to meddle with nature.
