All the energy of harvest is winding down, but dont let that fool
you, because wineries are gearing up for the fall season and the
holidays, which are just around the corner! In this months issue, let
the calendar be your guide for the Paso Robles Harvest Wine
Weekend; get ready for art exhibits and festivals; and explore some of
our favorite Paso Robles and Santa Barbara county wineries.
October is a festive month for Paso Robles wine country, as the
region celebrates the end of harvest season with its Annual Harvest
Wine Weekend (page 16 and page 38). For three fun-filled days,
wineries will invite guests into their tasting rooms, cellars and estate
vineyards for special tastings, tours and culinary treats. Participating
wineries host their own festivities, so check out the details in the
calendar and by visiting winery websites before setting out for your
adventure!
All October, Erin Hansoncontemporary Impressionist artist
will be showcasing her stunning artwork at Studios in the Park Art
Gallery in Paso Robles (page 22). Hansons life-long fascination with
art started as a child when she experimented with oils, acrylics,
watercolor, pastels, pen and ink, and life drawing. Be sure to stop by
Studios in the Park Art Gallery to catch her exhibit while its in town.
Santa Barbara wine country also celebrates the end of harvest with
their Celebration of Harvest, hosted by Santa Barbara Vintners on
October 9-12 (page 27). Enjoy food and wine tours, four-day
weekend wine tasting passes, a harvest dinner, a wine seminar and of
course, the epic grand tasting at Mission Santa Ins in Solvang.
Theres also Bubblyfest by the Sea, if Champagne and sparkling
wine is your beverage of choice! Taking place on October 1-4 in
Pismo Beach and for one special event at Laetitia Vineyard &
Winery in Arroyo Grande, Bubblyfest by the Sea offers guests the
chance to intimately explore the world of sparkling wine (page 21).
For winery destinations in Paso Robles, this month we guide you
to Donati Family Vineyards, celebrating harvest and their lovely
collection of wine (page 24); Clautiere Vineyard, offering an
unforgettable experience full of whimsical art and exquisite wines
(page 26); and Hunt Cellars, whose destiny became crafting
memorable wines in Paso Robles wine country (page 35).
In Santa Barbara County, dont miss our cover story on Qup
Wineswhere Winemaker Bob Lindquists commitment to cool
climate Syrah is downright admirable (page 20). Theres also the
incredible Talley Vineyards, featured on our cover corner, who not
only produces award-winning wines, but also possesses a strong
commitment to the local community (page 40).
With so many festivals and wineries in this issue, theres bound to
be enough to keep you busy until the holidays arrive!

Winegrowing Decisions
BY JOSH STEIN

Yosts Pinot Noir, produced for Wandering Dog from Rio Vista
Vineyard grapes, was affectionately named Leila, for CTs childhood
Newfoundland. Ever since, a good portion of Wandering Dogs
private label listing follows suit with names reflecting family canines
of past and present. Now, in 2015, Wandering Dog has burgeoned
beyond its Signature Series wines with its No Leashes program,
focusing on popular wineries from past wine lists.
As evident by the wine bars business name, and the tale behind its
multiple, dog-honoring wine labels, Wandering Dog Wine Bar is
dedicated to all things doggie. Wandering Dog is dog-friendly and
often hosts pet-related events and fundraisers, such as the upcoming
Pinot for Puppies on October 3a benefit for Shadows Funds Bright
Beginnings: Pit Bull Puppy Ambassador Program.
Family-owned and filled with eclectic adventurism, Wandering
Dog Wine Bar is known for carrying under-the-radar labels,
specializing in boutique wines. Wandering Dog Wine Bar offers a
dozen wine flights every day including everything from local
favorites, sparkling and sweet wines, to reserve flights featuring wines
that run $100+. For the beer connoisseur, Wandering Dog offers
bottles of domestic craft brews, and also has gourmet cheese and
charcuterie platters available in a variety of sizes, along with local
olives and fine chocolates.
Wandering Dog Wine Bars palate-picked wine menu
encompasses labels by artisan producers along the Central Coast and
wines from all over the world. The Bars knowledgeable staff
encourages guests to break out of their wine shell and try new wines,
some of which are sourced from unexpectedbut blossomingwine
regions, served with a healthy dose of friendly education in a relaxed
and comfortable, dog-friendly atmosphere.
Every Thursday, Wandering Dog Wine Bar hosts a locals-favorite
Blind Tasting, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., when guests are challenged to
match up regions, varietals, alcohol percentages, price points and
vintages of four featured red wines. They also feature Industry
Tuesdays, a wine-by-the-glass loyalty card program (buy 10 glasses,
get one free). Wandering Dog also arranges wine travel tours open to
its dedicated Wine Club Members and the general public.
Visit Wandering Dog Wine Bar in Solvang at 1539-C Mission
Drive. For more infromation, please call (805) 686-9126 or visit

Since 2001, the Larner Vineyard has been a source of fruit for many
accomplished winemakers in Santa Barbara and Paso Robles Counties. The
majority of wineries that stared sourcing Larner grapes, back as early as
2001, are still using fruit from the vineyard today. Most of the 23 clients
produce Larner Vineyard designated wines, not blending the grapes with fruit
from other sources. For the Larner family, it is an honor to be represented on
the label of these limited production wines. This year's Larner Fte will
feature 6 wineries who source Larner fruit. Each winemaker will be pouring
wines that he/she has made from the Ballard Canyon Estate.

Sunday: 12 - 6:00 p.m.
The Artist
Erin Hansons life-long fascination with art started as a child when she experimented in various
mediums of oils, acrylics, watercolor, pastels, pen and ink and life drawing. This passion led her to the
premier Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where, as a teenager, she studied figure
drawing and worked in a mural studio creating paintings for restaurants. After graduating from UC
Berkeley where she majored in Bioengineering, and becoming a successful entrepreneur, Hanson
returned to her first love: Art. An avid rock climber, Hansons panoramic views from atop Red Rock
Canyon in Las Vegas, with its ever-changing daily and seasonal light reflections on the richly colored
cliffs and desert, has been her inspiration for countless paintings.

Hansons zest for nature and her bubbly personality are conveyed through her artwork with her oil
paintings bringing a contemporary expression of traditional landscapes. She transforms these
landscapes into an abstract mosaic of color and rich texture, her impasto application of paint lending a
sculptural effect to her art. Hansons technique uses as few brush strokes as possible to create fresh,
alive paintings. Her unique, minimalist method of placing impasto paint strokes without layering has
been dubbed Open-Impressionism.

CLAUTIERE VINEYARD
An Experience You Wont Forget
One of a Kind
The tasting room at Clautiere Vineyard is one of a kind; part
fantasy, part serious, its an amalgam of the best of the wine world.
You need to see firsthand the vibe and the wines of this very unique
wineryits an experience you wont forget.
Artistic Expression
Adjacent to the tasting room is a playroom, stocked with all
manner of wigs. Once wigs are donned, they allow a person to release
their inhibitions and morph into their alter egoand perhaps that is
the best way to try something new, without any prejudices. Certainly,
every winery feels that it is important to differentiate themselves from
other wineries, and its merely a question of how you chose to do so.
Clautiere has a magical feel and its evident from the minute you get
out of your car with the landscaping, the metal gate and the large
mosaic ballsall of which were made by Claudine. We truly have
wines with an artistic expression, Jacobsen says. People might feel
more subdued at other tasting rooms but the aim of Clautiere is to
offer a fun and informal environment that expresses to guests that the
owners are passionate about the artistic side of wine. The experience
is elegantly rebellious!

sauce made with huacatay, a traditional Andean herb, and ahi panda,
peanuts and shrimp. For the main dishes, there is almost nothing
more delicious than the Tira de Lomo al Vino. This dish is composed
of Mistura free-range beef short ribs marinated with chica de jora,
beer, fine spices and aji panca (Peruvian chile pepper), cooked
together in a mild cilantro reduction sauce served with classic golden
yuca and Peruvian beans. The flavor profile of the Tira de Lomo al
Vino is incredible and the textures play on the palate with such grace.

HUNT CELLARS
The Destiny
David Hunts dream of developing on a beautiful wine estate, enjoying and sharing his very own
wines with friends, family and wine enthusiasts has become a reality with Hunt Cellars. With the goal of
creating world-class wines, the Hunt family visited wine regions throughout the Western U.S. before
finding their Destiny set amidst the rolling terrain of Californias enchanting Central Coast. Named
after their (then) newborn daughter, Destiny, the 550-acre estate on Highway 41 in Creston combines
the rich diversity of soils and varying topography with a climate where warm, sunny days are cooled by
the maritime influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean, creating the perfect conditions for growing fullbodied wines of incredible phenolic structure. The estate vineyards plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah, Petite Syrah, Cab Franc, Viognier and Zinfandel are the
core of the winerys portfolio, with a limited production Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir from the Santa
Rita Hills wine region completing the varietals.
Memorable Wines
Both owner and winemaker, David Hunt is committed to crafting memorable wines that one can fully
experience. With complex flavor profiles, the age-worthy wines tantalize the senses as they dance on the
palate with bold fruit overtones, and lush, silky elegance. Combined with intense aromas, the wines are
a sensory explosion. The Hunt Cellars Tasting Room, located on Highway 46 West, features two tasting
menus for guest to indulge in, with both offering award-winning varietals and blends, including three
different Cabernet Sauvignons and a Sauvignon Blanc Port styled like the great Sauternes of Europe.
Upcoming new releases include a Grenache named Let It Be from the Destiny Vineyard that Hunt tasted
numerous times and felt it was perfect just as it was, thus Let It Be.

TALLEY VINEYARDS
Award-Winning Wines & Commitment to the Community
In the Beginning
Reserve Tasting
in Historic Adobe
Talley Vineyards is now offering tastings in their
historic El Rincon Adobe. Built in the 1860s, the
Adobe provides an excellent setting for seated
tastings for groups of two to six. Enjoy a selection
of their current release Chardonnay and Pinot
Noir, with assorted crudits.
When Oliver Talley began planting peppers, lemons, avocados and cabbages in the Arroyo Grande
Valley in 1948, he couldnt have envisioned the impact his family would have on the local community
and Central Coast. What was once a vegetable farm, has now evolved into one of the regions most
respected, award-winning wineries, as well as a prominent pillar of the community.
Thirty four years after Oliver planted vegetables, his son Don planted the first wine grapes; four
years later, Talley Vineyards was born. Today, Brian Talley, Olivers grandson, and his wife Johnine,
oversee Talley Vineyards. Brian and Johnine are committed to carrying on the family tradition of
quality and sustainable farming, and are totally involved in giving back to the local community.
Award-Winning Wines
Since the initial 450-case release in 1986, the Talley family has built a reputation creating highly
rated and eagerly sought after, finely crafted wines. Today, 150 planted acres produce approximately
36,000 cases, with grapes being farmed from six distinctive SIP certified vineyards in the Arroyo
Grande and Edna Valleys. Talley offers a wide selection of estate varietals, and their cornerstone wines
are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Each separate wine is reflective of the specific terroir from their
individual vineyards on the Central Coast. Sip and taste Talley wines in their picturesque tasting room,
overlooking the local landscape and vineyards. Their reputation is well earned, and Talley wines have
been featured at the White House for various eventsseveral of the menus are proudly displayed on
the tasting room walls.
Mano Tinta
Possibly the most satisfying and important Talley events are the
two annual fundraisers. Good land grows good grapes, but a
dedicated crew of vineyard and farm workers is necessary to make it
all happen. In 2004, Talley started The Fund for Vineyard and Farm
Workers. This charity provides grants to nonprofit organizations in
San Luis Obispo County that support vineyard and farm workers
who tend the vineyards, and the funds help the workers in every
aspect of their lives from housing to education. Each year, Talley
releases their Mano Tinta wine; this year, they have released both a
red and white Mano Tinta wine. Local growers and vintners donate
all the materials, including grapes for production, and Talley donates
all the profits to The Fund.
Perfect Pairs
BY MELISSA VOGT
CHAMISAL VINEYARDS
2013 Estate Chardonnay
Paired with Arugula Pesto Pasta
When pairing Chardonnay, many will automatically reach for
fish or shellfish, but the truth is, there are many different kinds of
food that pair exceptionally well with Chardonnay. For instance,
Chamisal Vineyards, located in San Luis Obispo and specializing in
handcrafted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, has created an excellent
pasta dish that perfectly complements their 2013 Estate
Chardonnay.
As the first vineyard planted in San Luis Obispo Countys Edna
Valley in 1973, the 2013 Estate Chardonnay has great lineage in the
area. Today, the vineyard boasts an impressive five grape varieties
and twenty-five clonal selections. The Chardonnay vines, from
which this wine is made, are planted in calcareous, clay-rich soils,
which produces exceptional fruit with great complexity and
concentration on the palate. After being harvested, the grapes for
this wine were aged in a combination of French oak casks and
tanks, then aged in 40% new French and Hungarian oak barrels.
Luscious in texture and creamy in body, this 2013 Estate
Chardonnay is a wonderful accompaniment to the gemelli pasta
with zucchini, nioise olives, sheeps milk ricotta and arugula pesto.
The creamy ricotta cheese, briny olives and peppery arugula are
excellently matched to the intense flavor profile of the
Chardonnaybringing balance, juxtaposition and complementary
flavors together for a delightful pairing.
Nioise olives, zucchini and gemelli pasta, served over sheeps
milk ricotta and toasted breadcrumbs, makes for a textured and
delicious dish to serve alongside Chamisal Vineyards 2013 Estate
Chardonnay. The briny olives and flavorful zucchini work well with
the fruit flavors of candied pineapple and green pluot in the wine,
while the crisp acidity and mineral-filled finish really mingle well
with the peppery flavors of the arugula and toasted breadcrumbs.
Texturally, the creamy ricotta matches the luscious body of the
wine, making for a very round mouthfeel.
To pick up a bottle of Chamisal Vineyards 2013 Estate
Chardonnay to pair with this recipe, visit the estate tasting room at
7525 Orcutt Road in San Luis Obispoopen daily from 10:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m.or purchase online at www.chamisalvineyards.com.

n the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, lies Santa Barbara Countys historic
wine growing region. The first vineyard production in these rolling coastal hills dates
back to 1782, when Junipero Serra planted vines on Mission land. About a hundred years later,
there was 260 acres of luscious vineyards and seventeen winemakers in Santa Barbara
County. Sadly, the Prohibition Era destroyed many of these historic vineyard sites and mostly
put an end to winemaking in the regionas was the case in many of the beautiful winegrowing regions across the state. With that being said, the spirit and passion for winemaking
never left Santa Barbara County, and this wine growing region is alive and well today. Talented
winemakers are producing outstanding and pure terroir driven wines from the five American
Viticultural Areas (AVAs), planted mostly to Burgundian, Rhne and Bordeaux grape varieties.
Although the movie Sideways is said to have put San Barbara Countys wine growing
region on the map in 2004, especially the Santa Maria Valley AVA, it is the high quality of the
wine across the county that has continued to uphold this bountiful regions reputation.
Sprawling vineyards and gently rolling hills create a picturesque scene for visitors and locals
alike, who visit the many wineries, tasting rooms and wine bars in the area. In the five AVAs,
wine tasters will find a nice range of wine styles amongst the Burgundian, Rhne and
Bordeaux varietals that are produced.
In the more northern region, cool climate Burgundian varietals reign, such as Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay, due to the maritime influence. This ensures a long temperate growing
season which the Burgundian varietals crave. With ample amount of sunlight, the grapes ripen
very slowlyperfect for producing terroir driven wines with pure varietal characteristics. In
the southern region, there is more of a diurnal shift with warmer nights and cooler days. This
area sees less fog and has different soil types than what is found closer to the coast. The
Bordeaux and Rhne varieties flourish in this warmer climate and the sandy soils with limestone and chalk impart a wonderfully desirable minerality in the wines.
The wineries in Santa Barbara County boast a concentration of incredibly passionate and
talented winemakers; join them year round at their many events, celebrations and festivals, as
well as in their tasting rooms.

Bedford Winery
For the adventurous that seek the uncommon and are captivated
by character, go to Bedford Winery in Los Alamos. Along with barrel
fermented Chardonnays and signature Syrahs, there are also
surprises. One may discover lesser known varietals such as
Mourvdre, Cabernet Franc or dry Riesling. You might taste a wellaged library selection.
After more than thirty years in the field, winemaker Stephan
Bedford is still full of enthusiasm. He enjoys the hands-on mechanics
of winemaking. Using time-honored techniques, he creates wines
with personality and depth. Eclectic, off-beat and forgotten varietals
fuel his passion and creativity. His limited edition wines are available
primarily at the tasting room, which is open daily from 11:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m., sometimes longer depending on the season.
The tasting rooms rustic ambience invites you to focus in on the
wines and encourages dialog on a variety of topics with the well-read
Bedford staff. A generous garden courtyard is well suited for a relaxed
picnic. This is what wine tasting should be: wines that are not main
stream, an unrushed, intimate atmosphere and great conversation.
Bedford Winery is also known for out of the ordinary events.
From Mushrooms Gone Wild and historical readings with era specific
food, to original theatrical presentations by the talented Bedford
Players; plan on enlightened stimulation, smiling and thinking while
sipping Bedford wine.
Take the path less traveled and visit tiny downtown Los Alamos.
This quirky but friendly town harkens back to a bygone era, and now
its attracting maverick business owners and artists. It offers the
perfect laid back setting to enjoy your ultimate wine experience.

Cabernet Franc which can also be found on the tasting lists
showcasing the assortment of grapes that thrive here.
Most of the wineries have picnic areas; some large and open and
some small and secluded you just need to take your pick. When
visiting the trail its advisable to bring water with you and food as
there are no restaurants and many of the wineries are spread out. By
visiting this unique wine trail youll get in touch with the exceptional
wines of Santa Barbara and at the same time, step back into historic
California.

Ventura
No need to travel hours by train or plane to escape to wine country; residents of Southern
California can get in the car and drive (often less than an hour) to Ventura County, where more
than 9 wineries call home. Grapes are grown locally in Camarillo, Malibu and Oxnard in addition
to being brought in from top wine growing regions all over California. The winery personnel are
exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Take a day off to enjoy the cool ocean breezes and valley
warmth with the wines produced in your backyard.
