CCSU Lesson Plan Template

Student Teacher: Amanda Augustinsen

Grade Level 2

Lesson Date: 9/24/15

Name of Lesson: Shapes Introduction

Common Core State Standard(s)

Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a
given number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

Student Learning Objective(s)

The students will be able to differentiate between triangle,, squares, pentagons, and hexagons.
Assessment
Students will be assessed through a quiz at the end of the lesson. The quiz will have 5 questions.
Their will be 5 pictures of shapes and the children will be required to label the shape and write how
many sides a triangle, square, quadrilateral, pentagon, and hexagon have.

Classroom Learning Environment Focus

The students will begin by answering the initiating questions. Then one by one (after being called)
they will come up to the smart board and answer one of the questions on the padlet. The students will
go back to their seats and listen to the video recoded by screen cast o matic, They will follow along
on their handout of the slides. Then the students will answer their exit slip questions which recaps the
lesson. To conclude I will ask the students about shapes they see in their house and aside their
homework.

Instructional Model/Strategy
(i.e., concept formation, concept development, direct instruction, cooperative learning, inquiry,
discussion model). Explain how you will best facilitate student learning through a specific
model of instruction. Be sure to include a rationale for the chosen model(s). You may use more
than one:
This model of instruction involves involves direct instruction and discussion. The lesson will begin
with a discussion model, when the students are answering questions on the smart board and conclude
with direct instruction while the students are listening to the screen cast.

Daily Formative Assessment

How will you check for understanding and student achievement during the lesson?

Observe student work by walking around the room, continuously asking if students have
questions.

Initiation
I will begin the lesson with pictures of the five different shapes up on the smart board. I will ask
the students to raise their hand and tell me if they can name one of the shapes. I will have them
come up and point to the shape or write under the picture depending on their ability. Then I will
ask the students to name shapes they see in their every day lives. Example: What food can be
shaped as a triangle, what types of things are in the shape of a square. Here I will find out how
much the students already know.
Lesson Development
Cite how you will provide opportunities for the students to construct meaning. List the
steps/process you will follow. Be sure to identify how you will check for understanding and
collect formative data. Differentiate for students who will require an accommodation or
modification in order to be active participants in this lesson and state these strategies in the
differentiation section above.

!!

The students will be working on the same 5 shapes for three different activities for reinforcement
of the concept. I will check for understanding through the exit slip worksheet the students will
complete. This exit slip has 5 questions and asked the students to name the shape and specify how
many sides it has.
Closure
After the completion of the mini quiz, I will ask the students questions, such as what is your
favorite shape that we learned today? How many sides does that shape have? Where can you find
that object in the classroom. I will close the lesson by giving the children a question to think about
at home. I will ask them to find examples of shapes in their home and prepare a list of five shapes
to bring into class for the next day.
