NZ Business Owner Jailed For Arranging

Arson

Vijendra Naiker appears in the Auckland District Court for sentencing

A
"deeply
religious"
Auckland
businessman arranged for his factory
to be burned down and then made an
audacious bid for more than $3 million
from his insurance company.
Vijendra Naiker, 53, was jailed for 3
years 9 months after being found guilty
at trial at Auckland District Court on
counts of arson and dishonestly using a
document for a pecuniary advantage.
Insurance company IAG said the
investigation of the fraudulent claim
and a protracted court case had cost
them more than $1.3m - one of the most
expensive in its history.
But no reparation order was made against
Naiker because of his limited means.
In mid-2008, the owner and managing
director of Sargam Foods Ltd found his
business, producing snacks like samosas
and quiches, facing financial ruin.
Progressive Industries, to which the
company supplied food, was also
planning an audit after instigating new
quality-control standards.
"You decided to burn down the
premises," Judge David Sharp said.
Naiker enlisted the help of a friend - truck
driver Rashikendron Reddy - who recruited
another man to assist with the arson.
Oliovaigafa Neru agreed to participate
on the basis he was paid $500.
The day before the fire, Naiker showed
them around, pointing out alarms,
security cameras, where they should
break in and a spot in the office where
records were kept where the fire should
be lit.

604.510.4088

He hid the true nature of the visit from

his employees at the Henderson business
by having Neru fill out a shonky job
application.
On November 15, 2008 the duo executed
the plan and the premises on Bruce
McLaren Rd was gutted by fire.
Naiker stood on the roadside with his
family playing the part of the crestfallen
business owner who had seen his dreams
go up in smoke.
Insurance investigators were on the
scene soon after and when he made a
claim for more than $1m just days later
he was soon told by IAG they would not
be paying out.
Undeterred, Naiker lodged civil
proceedings against the company with
the High Court.
The final figure he claimed they owed
him reached $3,820,710 and the matter
has been put on hold pending the
resolution of the criminal charges.
IAG's deputy general counsel Seamus
Donegan described it as a "lengthy and
expensive" process.
He said the amount of resources Naiker's
claim consumed meant staff had to juggle
it with legitimate claims from distressed
Christchurch home owners affected by

the earthquake.
Mr Donegan explained customer
premiums formed a pool of funds to pay
out claims and fraudulent claims were
effectively theft from that pool.
Naiker's lawyer Ian Brookie said the
drawn-out proceedings had had a severe
impact both mentally and physically on
his client.
"He has, despite all this happening with
the fire, contributed to the Fijian-Indian
community in west Auckland," he said.
"He is a deeply religious man and
continued to contribute despite how long
these proceedings have taken."
Judge David Sharp gave Naiker credit
for his clean criminal record and the
difficulties he had faced in being on bail
for four years.
THE APPEAL
On the last day of Naiker's trial in
Auckland District Court the foreman of
the jury received a text message from his
boss containing prejudicial information
about the case.
When he raised it with Judge David
Sharp he was discharged and the
remaining jurors eventually found the
53-year-old guilty on both counts.
After sentencing, Mr Brookie said
he would be appealing his client's
convictions and applied for bail.
He believed other jurors had possibly
been "contaminated" and that had
compromised Naiker's fair-trial rights.
Crown prosecutor Ben Finn said there
had to be "exceptional circumstances"
to see bail granted and though there
were arguable grounds for an appeal, he
believed they were not strong.
Though Naiker had shoulder surgery
booked for next month and problems
with angina, Finn said his ailments could
be adequately managed in jail.
Judge Sharp agreed the circumstances
did not meet the threshold and remanded
Naiker in custody.
He said it had been a "difficult assessment"
dealing with the jury foreman issue but
he stood by his decision.
The appeal will likely be heard early
next year.

Singh Family Treat Senior Citizens

Fifty-two elderly members of the Senior
Citizens Home in Samabula, Suva,
expressed their gratitude to Sanjee Singh
and his family when they visited the
home on Monday.
The family provided dinner for the
elderly who are residents of the home.
Mr Singh, 45, was born and raised in
Tamavua, but now resides in Vancouver,
Canada, with his family.
For 25 years I have been staying in
Vancouver with my family and I am a
cab driver. I always help handicap people
to get into my taxi, he said.
I like helping people and I usually do
the same in Vancouver.
Once in a while, people should do
community work to thank God for
whatever they have, he said.

More Women Recruited In Public Service:

Bainimarama

More women are being recruited into

Fijis public service, says Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama.
The message was relayed by Mr
Bainimarama when delivering his statement
at the Global Leaders Meeting On Gender
Equality & Womens Empowerment:
A Commitment To Action at the United
Nations Headquarters in New York.
In our public service, all appointments
are on a transparent and merit-based
system which has resulted in the
recruitment of more women, he said.
He said he was also pleased to state that
Fiji was currently leading the Pacific
in the representation of women in
Parliamentary.
For the first time, Fiji has a female
Speaker of Parliament. The secretarygeneral to Parliament and the secretary
to Cabinet are also women and for the
first time in Fijis history all these three
positions are simultaneously held by
women.
In his Government he said, four women
possessed
significant
ministerial
portfolios.
He said over the last seven years, his
Government had increased funding to the
National Womens Machinery, by some
320 per cent. The National Womens
Machinery will continue to be supported
with adequate funding and human
resources to strengthen their capacity to

604.510.4088

have a strong gender database that can

better influence policy.
Government funding support to
Small and Micro-Enterprises (SME)
development to stimulate growth in
the SME sector, he said, had increased
substantially, and the criteria for project
selection was based purely on the merit
of the case.
In the last round of grants to 10 districts
within the country, 90 per cent of the
recipients were women.
For the second time this year, he said
Government was funding the National
Womens Expo to celebrate International
Rural Womens Day with the theme:
Connecting Women to Markets-

Making it Happen.
We have amended our criminal laws to
make it modern and gender inclusive.
We removed the archaic rules of
corroboration of rape which stereotyped
women and made it extremely difficult to
secure convictions.
He said Fijis family laws had been
amended to recognise the rights of
women in de-facto relationships and
Government had also introduced the first
Domestic Violence law which among
other things, allowed any person to apply
for a domestic violence restraining order.
Mr Bainimarama laws that once offered
women almost no protection were now a
vestige of the past.

Refugees Have Right To Shelter - Director

For Immigration, Nemani Vuniwaqa

Fiji has an obligation to house refugees

under the 1951 Convention on Refugees
signed in 1972, says Director for
Immigration, Nemani Vuniwaqa.
Mr Vuniwaqa said the Convention sets
a benchmark on how every signatory
should facilitate any refugee or asylum
seeker in any country.
Fiji as a sovereign state and has
the prerogative in abiding by these
Conventions and to deal with asylum
seekers or refugees. However, if Fiji
chose not to abide by these Conventions
then it can be regarded as a country that
doesnt fulfill or does not observe human
rights issues, Mr Vuniwaqa said.
Fiji had 17 declared refugees; three have
been relocated to New Zealand and one
to France while 13 others are in the
country. These people have undergone
refugee status determination process to
be declared refugees.
These people are from Afghanistan,
Somalia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana,
Congo, Russia and Tunisia.
These groups of people have the right to
shelter, food and also just for their basic
necessity needs, he said.
According to Mr Vuniwaqa the United

Nations High Commissioner for

Refugees (UNHCR) assists the refugees
in terms of funds, monthly allowances.
He said they also liaised with the
Immigration department to ensure that
these groups of people were cared for.
They are not living in accommodation
provided for by the state or the
department but they are fending for
themselves by allowances that are given
to them.
He confirmed that an asylum seeker
from Afghanistan had been repatriated
after his claims were not verified by the
UNHCR.
Mr Vuniwaqa said many of these asylum
seekers and refugees had been running to
Fiji because they feared for their safety.
Not all that has made claims have been
classified as refugees. Some were still
in their asylum seekers stages and have
been removed because their claims have
not been verified that is they may have
given false claims.
He also confirmed they were in the
process of facilitating these refugees
with refugee passports. At this stage,
he said the refugees have only been
identified with refugee ID cards.

He said if some met the requirements

of gaining citizenship, they could also
apply. Even some, he said had gain
Fijian citizenship after meeting the
requirements.
This is something employers too will
have to accept the fact that they will be
coming with those refugees IDs and
for them to be accepted. What we need
to accept is the fact that it would be a
brain gain for Fiji; the level of expertise
and skills that these refugees will come
with.
Mr Vuniwaqa however said these
refugees needed to get through other
processes before they would be eligible
to also work while being here as a
refugee.
As a way forward what Government
needs to do is put in place policies and
how we can accommodate and how we
can facilitate if theres a mass arrival
of refugees or boat people or asylum
seekers into the country.
We have to put in place how we can
accommodate them in terms of resources,
medical care, education. These are
policies need to be put in place in order
for us to move forward as a nation.

Revenue Aspect Of 2016 Budget Still Being Finalised

While budgets for most of the Ministries
have been finalised for 2016, some
other processes are still being finalised
including revenue aspects.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said normally when
speaking of budget, people only know
about expenditure and how much each
ministry was getting.
But there is another aspect which is
revenue, he said.
He said it was important to note what
kind of revenue would be generated and
how Government will get the revenue
and through what policies.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said most of the

Ministries had their budgets set but
some of them needed to be finalised after
another round of consultations.
Furthermore,
Mr
Sayed-Khaiyum
said following the Budget Forum on
Saturday, there were a couple of issues
which went around but needed to be
discussed specifically with the groups in
detail.
This is because some people make
general comments that we should do this
but how do you do it. So we need more
specific details, he said.

4 Jailed For Gang Rape

Four men in their 20s have been handed
down prison sentences for gang raping a
29 year old mother of three in Navua in
December 2012.
Justice Paul Madigan sentenced Manoa
Nairogorogo to 11 years in prison, Josefa
Rauto to 9 years imprisonment, Kameli
Sauduadua who has been convicted of two
counts of rape has been sentenced to 10

604.510.4088

years imprisonment while Abarama Siri has

been sentenced to 8 years imprisonment.
In mitigation Nairogorogo said he is
married and asked for forgiveness,
Rauto apologized to the court and
asked for leniency, Sauduadua asked
for forgiveness saying that he is married
and is the father of a child born just days
ago while Siri said he was too drunk to

david@fijitimescanada.com

remember anything.
Justice Madigan says the assault of the
woman was a nasty violent group attack
and as such must attract penalties over
and above the usual penalty for rape.
The woman was beaten up and gang
raped after 1am after she was drinking
outside a club with another group. A
bystander then called the police.

Business Community Gathers To

Contribute To National Budget

In bid to deliver an effective national

budget, the Government provided the
members of the business community
the opportunity to put forward their
submissions from their various sectors.
Faith organisations, trade unions and
NGOs were also present at the 2015
Budget Forum held at the Grand Pacific
Hotel in Suva.
The 2015 National Budget will be
delivered on November 6. The Minister
of Finance and Acting Prime Minister
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said:
At the end of the day, it is Governments
prerogative to determine the budget.
But we want to be able to determine a
budget which has as much participation
as possible from all the various sectors
within our society.
The forum was organised in a manner
where members from the same sectors
were teamed to bring forth discussions
through presentations.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said through the
method of the forum, members and
Government would then be able see the
types of issues faced in the economy.
Past Issues
Through the past forum sessions, there
have been a number of issues that the
Minister for Finance highlighted.
He said: I think in the budget
formulations we normally find as
a ministry is that there is always a
competing interest.
We also have on the other hand a number
of issues where some NGOs may have a
particular interest in terms of advocating

a particular area in the economy and they

do not necessarily have a face-to-face
dialogue with the others.
We have the consumer rights people
also. They will also have a general
overview of financial services maybe of
how the construction industry operates.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum added: Faithbased organisations, for example, we
sometimes on a weekly basis, get written
submissions to give them a waiver on
duties.
Some faith-based organisation has
decided they have some donor in
Australia, NZ or USA and they are
sending some furniture down for their
school in Ba and we want a concession.
There are discretionary powers that the
minister has to waive that duty. But we
want to be consistent about that.
He explained sometimes the analysis
that may be done by Fiji Revenue and
Customs Authority or Ministry of
Finance officials may be a bit skewed.
Therefore, we want general rules about
it. Maybe the person writing up the brief
does go to a particular denomination of
church and they may recommend giving
the waiver.
But when another denomination sends
in their application, they may say dont
give the waiver because we need to not
lose any revenue from tariffs.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said these were the
kind of constant issues that they had
faced in the past.
There are some wider issues that we
would love to get your input on as we

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
mentioned last year, he deliberated.
For example when we are generally
talking about finance there is a gap and
we identified last year that we need to
set up a venture finance company and
we still want to do that. We hope to hear
from the financial sector and private
sector on that.
Purpose
The Budget Forum serves as a platform
to raise concerns and contribute to a
wider good for the economy.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said: The whole
idea is hearing your feedback. We also
want to be able to get you to talk to each
other and hear from each other as to
what are those interests and have a better
understanding.

Lautoka Sugar Packaging Plant To Open

Soon

Sugar of Fiji Packaging Plant in Lautoka

The Fiji Sugar Corporation is expected
to open its Sugar of Fiji Packaging Plant
in Lautoka soon.
And Prime Minister and Minister
for Sugar Voreqe Bainimarama will
officiate the opening which has cost FSC
in access of $2 million.
FSC executive chairman, Abdul Khan,
said it is all part of their strategy that will
value add and also enhance the brand
of Fijian sugar for the new packaging
which is the Sugar of Fiji.
It is basically packing it into retail
packages which we will be selling into
Fiji, the region and the niche markets of
Australia and New Zealand, he said.
What used to happen in the past was
merchants would buy it in 50kg and
25kg bags and then they would refill it
into one and two kilograms.
So that is what we are doing now
to actually package it as one and two
kilograms and four kilograms, and then
put in to cartons.
Then send it across to the merchants to
sell so they dont have to worry about
repackaging it.
Mr Khan added they will still pack the
25kg and the 50kg bags.
Because if someone is at a function,
they may be better off buying the 25kg
bags or a 50kg bags rather than buying a
one or two kg bags, he said.
He said at the moment the entire
machine and is going through trials with
packaging and they were making sure
everything runs well.
If everything goes well then we should

604.510.4088

expect it to open within weeks from now

we should be able to start basically doing
it in a big way, he said.
Staffing
Mr Khan said initially they are looking
at about eight to ten people.
We have advertised in the papers so that
it gives everybody an opportunity that
we ensure that we get the best people for
the job, he said.
That will grow as we grow that market
and as we grow the whole operation.
If we are looking at for example the
local market then it wont be that far
away from 10 to 12 people but once we
get it operating for a 24/7 basis then all
we will increase our numbers to suit it.
Next shipment
FSC is expected to send the fourth
consignment of sugar as export next

month.
We are supposed to send one in
November so basically when everything
goes well, will do that, he said.
Mr Khan said they intend to do now
is actually work with suppliers to
make sure that they dont just send the
shipment and they end up overloading at
their storage.
This was because of the decent amount
of storage available in Lautoka.
He said they are working with them to
find out what are the best tonnes.
At the moment we have a ship scheduled
in the middle of November. This one
will be our forth shipment in the year.
He said the packaging will happen all
year around.
That is the beauty of being independent.
The packaging is part of making sure
we do enough retail packages to be in
market because people use sugar all year
around, he said.
That is why we have had it as an
independent operation from the mills
and other operations.
Sugar and mill operations
Mr Khan said so far over 150,000 tonnes
of sugar have been made by the four
mills.
And the amount of cane that we have
processed is just about over 1.3 million
tonnes, he said.
Mr Khan said the four sugar mills around
the country are in good shape, however,
Lautoka mill suffered mechanical
problem on Sunday and crushing is
expected to normalise later.
The mills are pretty good but we have
just found a fault in one of our roller
mills and with the bearing has failed in
the Lautoka mill, he said.

PM Frank Bainimarama Meets NZ PM John Key

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

has finally met with New Zealand Prime
Minister John Key.
Bainimarama and Key held a formal bilateral
talk at the margins of the 70th Session of the
United Nations General Assembly in New
York the first since the military overthrow
of Fijis elected government in 2006.
After posing for photographs and
having a quick chat about rugby, Key
and Bainimarama withdrew to a private
room to continue their meeting.
The Prime Ministers also accepted
invitations to visit each others country
in the near future.
According to a Fijian Government
Statement, Bainimarama congratulated
New Zealand on her role at the United
Nations Security Council and thanked
New Zealand for convening the open
debate on Peace and Security Challenges
facing Small Island Developing States.
He noted that this useful initiative took
place during New Zealands Presidency

604.510.4088

of the Security Council.

On the subject of oceans, Key said that
New Zealand was very pleased to be able
to announce the declaration of one of the
worlds largest oceans sanctuaries within the
New Zealand EEZ in the Kermadec region.
He said the sanctuary will cover 15% of
New Zealands EEZ, an area twice the
size of NZs landmass.
Bainimarama welcomed this news, and
advised Key of Fijis own efforts to
safeguard Sustainable Development Goal
14, the Oceans Goal, by inaugurating the
Triennial Conferences on Oceans and Seas.
He said that the Governments of Fiji and
Sweden would co-host the first of these
conferences in Fiji in June 2017.
The Prime Ministers expressed pleasure
in the growth of tourism arrival figures
in both countries.
Bainimarama said that there were many
opportunities of mutual benefit for
bilateral trade and investment.
He said that all avenues should be

david@fijitimescanada.com

explored to expand these relations,

including using the platform of the FijiNZ Business Council.
It was agreed that a suitable timing
for these reciprocal visits would be
organized at official levels within their
respective governments.
Bainimarama informed Key that Fiji
was putting forward a candidate for the
Presidency of the United Nations General
Assemblys 71st Session (2016 2017).
He said that the Pacific Islands had never
had the privilege of holding the General
Assemblys Presidency and that Fiji
believed the time was right to do so.
The Fijian Prime Minister said that Fijis
candidate, Ambassador Peter Thomson,
was the right man for this role and that
Fiji would welcome New Zealands
support in this regard.
The Prime Ministers also wished their
respective countries the very best of
luck in forthcoming games at the Rugby
World Cup in the United Kingdom.

Focus On Professionalism - Anthony Gates

To Lawyers

Over the years the Fiji Law Society

(FLS) has preferred to immerse itself
in other matters, mainly politics than
paying attention to the real concerns
of the profession, says Chief Justice
Anthony Gates.
Justice Gates made the remark while
opening the Fiji Law Societys
Convention at Novotel Suva Lami Bay.
The theme of the convention is
Fundamentals of Private Practice.
He said the Society should pay more
attention on how it should dispatch
its business, how to avoid ethical
conundrums, how to improve the
services to be delivered, how to sign up
clients and how to bill transparently and
fairly and how to enhance the reputation
of its members.
This criticism is not confined to the
times of constitutional stress during and
after coups, Justice Gates said.

He said over the years the profession has

commendably provided many members
who served as parliamentarians.
We need lawyers in Parliament so that
legislations can be effectively scrutinised,
and the workability of intended measures
and sanctions can be considered, and
the overall reasonableness and fairness
of restrictions on our freedoms can be
carefully weighed, Justice Gates said.
But that is not to say that a professional
society set up for the profession should
itself be concerned with politics.
That, he said, was the role of individuals
and the Societys focus should be on
matters dealing with day to day practice
of law, and to ensure the professionalism
of its members.
He congratulated the Society for reinvigorating its role for the legal
profession.
He encouraged legal practitioners

to attend and obtain their necessary

points in order to retain their practicing
certificates and those attending to
participate and improve themselves.
The Society was re-established last year
after it was defunct for many years with
its last convention held in 2008.
The two-day convention ended with over
150 lawyers from around the country

Fiji PM Re-affirms Fijis Commitment To

Peacekeeping Duties

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

has pledged further commitment to the
United Nations Peacekeeping.
Bainimarama addressed the Leaders
Summit on Peacekeeping in New York
organized by US President Barack
Obama and UN Secretary-General Ban
Ki-moon.
Bainimarama said Fiji will continue
to contribute military, police and
correctional officers and other resources
to UN peacekeeping operations.
Addressing the members of this Summit,
Bainimarama assured them of Fijis
commitment to peace-keeping.
Those present included the US President
Barack Obama and UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon.
Fiji is a nation dedicated to
peacekeeping. UN peacekeeping is
now part of Fijis national identity. In
spite of being a country of fewer than a
million people, our soldiers, police and
correctional officers have served in blue
helmets all over the world. Fiji has paid a
high price for its peacekeeping vocation.
Fijian blood has been shed for the
sake of peace, security and prosperity
worldwide and for the protection of the
innocent. But I am here today to assure
you that our commitment is firm and that
we will do more. said Bainimarama
Bainimarama said the Summit had come
at a crucial time when the international

604.510.4088

community was looking to the United

Nations for strong and decisive
leadership to confront the worlds many
security challenges.
And to ease the suffering of people
who endure violence , subjugation and
the loss of their homes and way of life.
The terrorist act in Sinai by ISIS which
injured four American soldiers and 3
Fijian soldiers should be a wakeup call
to us all. Peacekeeping is a dangerous
business and there are groups for whom
violence has become an ideology in and
of itself. We are witnessing violence that
knows no bounds committed both by
states and non state actors, nothing is
sacred in fact terror works best when no
one is exempted

The Fijian Prime Minister has pledged

further infantry resources, including
reserves for rapid deployment.
Im proud to announce today that
Fijis new pledge to the United Nations
Peacekeeping operations. Fijis already
contributed a plant troop of engineers
with UNDOF in Syria and we intend to
increase our strength in unified in South
Lebanon from an infantry company to an
infantry battalion. The Republic of the
Fiji Military Forces has a light infantry
company and other light infantry
battalion ready to be deployed by service
where needed within 60 to 90 days
depending on the urgency of the UN rapid
deployment . In addition the Republic
of the Fiji Military Forces will provide
a platoon of field engineers for both
vertical and horizontal constructions,
a platoon of personal security , PSD
specialists for principals protection and
a medical team comprising doctors and
nurses to assist in level two hospital in
any UN rapid deployment operations.
said Bainimarama
New peacekeeping arrangements are
also being pursued by the RFMF.
In addition to our UN rapid deployment
capabilities, the RFMF is pursuing
new peacekeeping arrangements with
strategic partners. In this regard we seek
donor assistance from other countries
to convert our light infantry unit, both
are the Fiji Police and Fiji Corrections
Service Officers will also be readily
available to participate in new UN rapid
deployment operations and existing UN
field missions said Bainimarama
The Leaders Summit on Peacekeeping
was organised on an invitation-only basis
for UN troop-contributing countries
that were prepared to pledge further
commitments to UN peacekeeping.

Fiji Is What I Was Looking For

Waking up every morning to bomb blasts
and terrorist attacks by Taliban was the
life Bahram Mahmoodi lived back in
Kabul, Afghanistan.
He is among refugees in Fiji who are
here to seek asylum from the government
and is kept at an undisclosed safe house
under the Immigration Department.
Fiji is the place where I finally found
what I was looking for after living my
family and friends back in Afghanistan
in search for peace and a better life.
I love Fiji because it is a peaceful
country and not only that, the people are
caring and kind.
The people of Afghanistan have
suffered a lot because of terrorist attacks.
I have also lost some family members
and to see people dying every day right
in front of my eyes is terrifying and
heartbreaking, Mr Mahmoodi said.
Kabul is the capital city of Afghanistan.
He said terrorist attacks had been part of
his child hood.
Our right to having a good education
and living a better civilised life has been
taken away because of war which has
also led to people fleeing Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is nothing compared to Fiji
because my country was a violent place
and the thoughts of going back there is
like going to get killed.
The scene in my country was seeing dead
bodies lying on the streets nearly every day
after a bomb blasts and it has affected me
emotionally and mentality, Mahmoodi said.
Trying to hold back his tears, the 20-

Arfaodi Mohamed (left) of Tunisia and Bahram Mahmoodi of Afghanistan in

year old said that if he had to return to
Afghanistan then there were high risks.
I have left all the memories about
Afghanistan when I landed in Fiji and
there are no plans to even think about
going back there, he said.
Meanwhile,
his
friend, Arfoudi
Mohamed of Tunisia, 35, a graduate with
an engineer diploma who also echoed the
similar sentiments. Mohamed arrived in
the country on April this year.
Tunisia is the northern most country in
Africa,

Imagine even the president left our

country to seek asylum in Saudi Arabia
and I knew I had to run too if not I would
have died too along with those killed in
terrorists attack in Tunisia.
He comes from a family of five with 3
sisters and a brother.
Tunisia was a peaceful country until the
terrorists started invading our country
in 2011 creating a series of terrorists
attacks, which changed everything. I
have informed my family about Fiji and
they are happy that I am safe, he said.

Fiji was also unanimously elected as Second
Vice Chair of the Executive Committee of
the CTO Council. Other elected members
include Nigeria as Committee Chair and
Trinidad and Tobago as First Vice Chair.
The CTO Council is the highest decision
making body in the CTO. For Fiji to
assume the position of Second Vice Chair
will significantly enhance Fijis influence
and importance, said Attorney General

Sayed-Khaiyum.
Fiji also recently executed an agreement
with the CTO to formulate Fijis cyber
security strategy.
Fijis cyber security strategy will not
only benefit Fijians by keeping our
country as secure as possible, it also
benefits other Pacific Island countries
by giving them a model framework off
which to base their own strategies. This
will enable the Pacific region to increase
our connectivity and decrease the digital
divides that exist between us, said AG.

Agriculture Delegation Witnesses

Revolutionised Kava Market In The US

A huge market for Fijian Kava or

Yaqona in the United States of America
(USA) is expected to grow exponentially
estimating
to
generate
around
USD$15million in export earnings.
Ministry of Agriculture acting permanent
secretary, Mr Uraia Waibuta, who is also
heading a Fijian-led US Market Scoping
Delegation said that the current demand
for Kava in the US alone is around 10
tons per year and has the potential to
easily grow to 20 tons easily, as other
market segments are explored.
This was highlighted after the delegation
met with key Kava importers in
California.
Mr Waibuta said that one of their
highlights was the visit to a modernised
Kava Bar in Sacramento called the Root
of Happiness Kava Bar.
This is Northern Californias first Kava
bar which opened its doors in March
2013 and has been frequented by the
diverse American consumers.
We have witnessed this very
modernised set up of a Kava Bar. It has
redefined the kava bar as we know it in
Fiji. It is designed to target the American
customers and its expanding market.
Even more surprising was that the
owner, Mr Tyler Blythe said 90 percent
of his customers were Russians who
were interested in the serene atmosphere
and more importantly the soothing effect
of kava drinks, he said.
Mr Waibuta said that to our amazement
when walking in to meet the owner we
noted the bar was already half full with
customers drinking the various kinds of
Kava beverages served.
Mr Blythe who is the head of the
American Kava Association said that
all Kava entering the United States
will need to be cleared by the Food &
Drugs Administration (FDA), analysed
of its chemical compositions, especially
the Kavalactone level, to ensure that
products served to the customers are
safe for consumption and meet customer
satisfaction.
Thats why you see these customers
who come in hundreds every night and
they are very happy with our products,
he said.
Mr Blythe, mentioned that they opened
30 Kava Bars around America and they
are planning to expand a total of 60 Kava
bars by the end of 2016.
Mr Waibuta reiterated that farmers in
Fiji need to grow more kava to fulfill the

604.510.4088

demand in the export market particularly

the US market. The current production
for Kava in Fiji is around 4000 tonnes
from a total area of 1,300 hectares.
This will need to be increased. The
Ministry of Agriculture will increase its
efforts to support the Kava Industry, Mr
Waibuta added.
The Ministry he said, will further
strengthen its collaboration with its
partners, namely the European Union
(EU) funded Improving Key Services to
Agriculture Fiji (IKSA) projects of the
Secretariat of the Pacific Community
(SPC) in establishing kava nurseries
around key areas in Fiji, so farmers can
access good quality planting materials
and more importantly the variety that is
demanded by the market.
PHAMA, the Pacific Horticultural
and Agricultural Market Access,
an Australian and New Zealand

david@fijitimescanada.com

government funded program is now

helping the Ministry and industry in the
development of the Fiji Yaqona (Kava)
Quality Manual.
Mr Waibuta said this development will
help farmers and exporters identify the
13 noble kava varieties in Fiji, areas in
which these kava varieties are cultivated
and also laboratory tests on which
varieties have the best kava lactone level.
Public awareness material such as posters
documenting production, processing and
a national kava standard based on food
safety are also being developed.
So, Kava is already entering another
boom and with the Fijian Government
support from 2016 we envisage positive
interest and an increase in production,
of course we will work with the price
mechanism that will ensure that the
farmers get their fair share of the price,
said Mr Waibuta.

Punched While Trying To Drive A

Bus

Logan Pillay did not see the punch

coming.
He was driving the 717 bus in a slow
moving queue of Auckland traffic when
the passenger's fist struck him on the left
side of his face.
"He just swung his right into me and
could have knocked me unconscious but
for another passenger pulling him back, "
said the slightly built 57-year-old, recalling
assault, on Grampian Rd, Kohimarama.
But Mr Pillay's time of danger did not
end there.
His foot slipped off the brake when he
was punched and the Metrolink bus
lurched forward into a car in front.
"When I hit the car, that driver was full
of rage.
"He opened his door, came up to me, I
opened the window and he shook his fist
through the window."
"The passenger who pulled off the other
guy went outside and said to him, 'the driver
has just been assaulted, so simmer down'."
At the time, 15 passengers were on board
for the trip from Downtown to Otahuhu
via Glen Innes.
Mr Pillay took a day off to let swelling
on the left side of his face heal before
returning to work.
He said the attack came as a surprise.
A minute earlier the passenger - "a
big grey-haired man of 50 to 60" had
demanded to be let out and was told that
he could at the next bus stop.
"Otherwise, the bus would have held up
the traffic - we had been diverted around
road works from the normal route."
Mr Pillay said he could smell alcohol

Father Edward John Herbert Accused Of

Charges against a father accused of
dousing his children in petrol and setting
one of them on fire while in her cot have
been upgraded to attempted murder.
Edward John Herbert, from Perth,
was originally charged with causing
grievous bodily harm to his three-yearold and seven-year-old daughters at their
Doubleview home in August.
When Herbert appeared at Perth

It is alleged the three-year-old girl was
set on fire whilst she was in her cot.
She suffered burns to upper body and
face, whilst the seven-year-old also
suffered burns.
The court heard a charge involving a
third child would be discontinued.
Herbert is also facing charges of making

Canada's Population Getting Older

More than 1 out of every 6 people in
Canada over age 64 in July
For the first time ever, there are now
more people in Canada age 65 and over
than there are under age 15, according to
Statistics Canada.
The data agency said Tuesday that
Canada's population sat at 35,851,800
at the start of July, a figure that has
increased by 308,100 or 0.9 in the past
year. That's the smallest annual increase
in 17 years, but still the largest pace of
growth seen in any G7 nation.
Much of growth came in the form of
people coming from other countries, as
migration accounted for 60.8 per cent
of the population growth. The rest was
natural population growth, as people
already in Canada had children.
Aging population
Canada met a milestone that demographers
have seen coming for a long time. In the
year ended in July, the population of
people 65 and older is now larger than the
number of children under 15.
There were 5,780,900 Canadians 65
and older on July 1. That compares to
an under-15 population of 5,749,400.
In percentage terms, 16.1 per cent of
Canadians were in the 65-and-over
group in July, with under-15s accounting
for just 16 per cent of the population.
The cohort of people 65 and up isn't just
large in absolute terms, but their ranks

are growing faster than the rest of us,

too. The population growth rate for the
over-64 set increased by 3.5 per cent
during the year, four times faster than the
population at large.
That pace of growth has increased every
year since 2011, the data agency said.
But by international standards, Canada's
population of 65-and-overs is still
relatively small, and lower than any other
G7 nation. In Japan, for example, 26 per
cent of the population is over age 64.
The bulge of aging baby boomers
isn't increasing evenly across Canada,
however. Provincially, New Brunswick
had the highest proportion of over-64s,
at 19 per cent of the province's total
population. Conversely, the lowest
proportion in Canada was in Nunavut,
at 3.7 per cent. Of the provinces, Alberta
had the lowest proportion at 11.6 per cent.
Nationally, there were 1.01 seniors for
every child in Canada under age 15 in
July. The ratio was highest in Nova Scotia
at 1.35 and lowest in Nunavut at 0.12.
Across all age groups, four provinces are
making up a bigger and bigger share of
Canada's total population. In July, 86.3 per
cent of people in Canada lived in Ontario,
Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta.
That breaks down as follows:
Ontario, 38.5 per cent.
Quebec, 23 per cent.
B.C., 13.1 per cent.

Alberta, 11.7 per cent.

Ontario is still Canada's most populous
province, with 13,792,100 people,
Statistics Canada said. Quebec is the
second most populated province at
8,263,600 people.
Economic impact
The implications of the demographic
rebalancing underway are massive,
assistant professor Mike Moffatt of the
Richard Ivey School of Business in
London, Ont., says.
"Immigration helps a little bit on the
margins, but overall the aging is going to
happen," Moffatt said. "You can't immigrate
your way out of a demographic bubble."
The economic impacts of that bubble
are already being felt. The number of
Canadian women in the workforce into
their late 60s has tripled in the last 15
years, Moffatt notes, something that's
already changing the makeup of the
workforce in other developed countries.
Fortunately, Canada is experiencing the
baby boomer bulge comparatively late,
so we can learn from the experiences
of other countries in how to deal with
accompanying problems.
"As the Canadian population gets older,
we've got more and more retired people,"
Moffatt warns. "That puts pressure on
the health system and pension system
because there's a smaller cohort of
working age people to support that."

Goat 'Arrested' After Walking Into

Saskatchewan Tim Hortons, Refusing To
Leave: 'He Was Very Unhappy'

RCMP in Warman, Sask., were forced to

arrest a "stubborn" goat for refusing to
leave a Tim Hortons on Sunday morning.
In a statement, RCMP said that
employees initially "asked" the goat to
leave and tried to walk him outside, but
the rebellious animal turned around and
sauntered back through the restaurant's
automatic doors.
Eventually two RCMP members were
called to deal with the "disturbance."
The officers believed that the goat was
"cold," and like many Canadians, was
forced to take refuge in a Tim Hortons.
They added that the goat simply wanted
to "sleep in the entrance."
Faced with a noncompliant citizen, the
RCMP officers "arrested" the goat and

604.510.4088

escorted him into their vehicle.

RCMP says the goat was "very unhappy"
at his treatment.
"The members decided to take him
home instead of holding cells at the
detachment," said the RCMP statement.
At first, they were unable to locate the

david@fijitimescanada.com

owners of the goat after knocking on the

doors of many local farms.
The goat was held at an animal hospital,
until the RCMP tracked down his owners.
"We are happy to report that the goat is
safe and sound, back with his owners after
his adventurous night out on the town."

Fast And Furious Star's Daughter Meadow

Sues Porsche Over Deadly 2013 Car Crash

The daughter of late actor Paul Walker,

who died in the fiery crash of a Porsche
sports car in California two years ago,
has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against
the car company.
Meadow Walker, 16, claimed in the
complaint the automaker skimped on
safety features for the vehicle which
could have either prevented the crash
entirely or at least kept Walker alive,
court records show.
Paul Walker was a passenger in the 2005
Porsche Carrera GT driven by Roger
Rodas, who lost control of the vehicle
before it hit a power pole and burst
into flames north-west of Los Angeles,
killing both men.
The lawsuit said Porsche knew the car
model had a "history of instability and
control issues" and added that the seat
belts were designed such that in a crash,
the shoulder belt anchor would be pulled
along with the rear engine compartment
while the seat anchor would remain in
place.
"This snapped Walker's torso back with
thousands of pounds of force, thereby
breaking his ribs and pelvis, flattening
his seat and trapping him in a supine

604.510.4088

position, where he remained alive until

the vehicle erupted into flames one
minute and 20 seconds later," the filing
said.
"Absent these defects in the Porsche
Carrera GT, Paul Walker would be alive
today," the complaint added, citing the
seat belt design and other issues.
A lengthy investigation by the Los
Angeles County Sheriff's Department
and California Patrol found the car was
travelling at 151 kilometres per hour.

The same investigation concluded it was

speed and not mechanical problems that
caused the crash.
Porsche could not be immediately
reached for comment, but attorneys for
the German car company said in April
that Rodas was to blame for the crash
following a lawsuit filed by his widow
against the company's North American
unit last year.
Attorneys for the company had then
denied the car had any defects.

Meadow Walker, now 16, is suing Porsche for her father Paul Walker's death

Vaughan Ontario Crash That Killed 4

Leaves First Responders 'Heartbroken'
4 people, including 3 children from the same family, died in crash last Sunday in community north of Toronto

A first responder with 20 years of

experience says Sunday's crash in
Vaughan, Ont., that killed three children
and their grandfather has left his
colleagues heartbroken.
"It's one of the most horrific things I've
seen," Vaughan Fire and Rescue Deputy
Chief Andy Zvanitajs told the reporter
on Tuesday. "From the collision and the
damage to the vehicles, it's one of the
worst ones I've seen in 20-plus years
of being a paramedic and a firefighter.
These first responders, these firefighters,
are heartbroken."
More than 30 first responders attended
to Sunday's crash, which involved an
SUV slamming into a minivan carrying
six family members. At one point,
firefighters and paramedics were working
to resuscitate four people at once.
The Neville-Lake family's van was
T-boned at the intersection of Kirby Road
and Kipling Avenue, north of Kleinburg.
Three siblings Daniel 9, Harrison 5,
and Milly 2 were killed along with their
65-year-old grandfather, Gary Neville.
The children's grandmother and greatgrandmother are in stable condition in
hospital.
'It was an extremely tragic scene'
Marco Muzzo, 29, of King Township,
who was driving the SUV involved in

604.510.4088

the crash, faces 18 charges, including

four counts of impaired driving causing
death.
Zvanitajs said that in addition to the

david@fijitimescanada.com

devastation such a crash causes for the

families, it takes a toll on those with the
job of helping victims at the scene.
"It was an extremely tragic scene,"
said Zvanitajs. "When you add a child
element to a call and then you multiply
it by three or four, that compounds the
effect on your mental fitness."
Zvanitajs said management teams of
paramedics and firefighters are learning
more about how dealing with heartwrenching crashes can leave first
responders with the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder.
He said that after the crash, paramedics
and firefighters came forward, offering
to work for those who were shaken by
what they saw on Sunday.
"I had people literally lining up to say
'I will come in and work if these people
want to go home,'" he said.
Zvanitajs also said impaired driving
continues to take a heavy toll on families,
despite years of police and governments
drumming home the message about how
it can devastate families.
"People can make choices and take
responsibility for their actions and that's
where it starts," he said. "Before you go
out, have a plan."

Bride And Groom Bill No-Show Wedding

Guests $80 For Dinner

First their presence was requested, then

an $80 bill payment.
A Minnesota woman is speaking out after
her no show at a recent wedding led to her
being billed by the bride and groom.
Jessica Baker of Golden Valley said
she was absolutely floored when a few
weeks after missing a relative's wedding
a bill arrived in her mailbox for $75.90.
"This cost reflects the amount paid
by the bride and groom for meals that
were RSVP'd for, reimbursement and
explanation for no show, card, call or
text would be appreciated," it read.

604.510.4088

"You've got to be kidding me," Baker

recalled her reaction in an interview with
KARE11 News.
Baker said she fully intended to attend
the wedding but her mother, who was
serving as her babysitter during the
event, cancelled at the last minute.
Because the wedding invitation
specifically stated children could not
attend, Baker said they had no other
choice but to stay home.
Though Baker said she has no plans on
paying the bill which she said she's
since thrown away she wonders what

david@fijitimescanada.com

her correct response should have been.

What's not clear in her interview is if she
attempted to notify the bride and groom
about her last-minute cancellation, as
implied in the letter attached to the bill.
That's something one wedding expert,
Sarah Baumann Rogers, who serves as
editor for Minnesota Bride magazine,
advised guests to do as soon as possible.
As for the hosts, Rogers told KARE11:
"Under no circumstances should you
choose to follow up after the fact ... kind
of questioning why they couldn't attend
or much less sending a bill."

Cell Phone Radiation May Lead To Poorer

Sex Life

Do you eat, sleep and drink your mobile

phone, literally? Limit your WhatsApp
or Facebook urge as men using cell
phones for over four hours a day are at
a greater risk of impotency than those
who use it for less than two hours, an
alarming research has indicated.
Two new studies in Austria and Egypt
have linked daily cell phone use to
erectile dysfunction (ED).
The researchers believe the damage could
be caused by the electromagnetic radiation
emitted by handsets or the heat they generate.
For the study, the researchers recruited
20 men with erectile dysfunction and

another group of 10 healthy men with no

complaints of ED.
There was no difference between either
group regarding age, weight, height,
smoking, total testosterone or exposure
to other known sources of radiation.
Scientists found that men who had
erectile dysfunction carried switched-on
cell phones for an average of 4.4 hours
daily, whereas the men without erectile
dysfunction averaged 1.8 hours.
"Men who use mobile phones could
be risking their fertility," said the
researchers in a report published in
the latest newsletter of Environmental

Health Trust (EHT).

A non-profit organisation, EHT focuses
on raising awareness on the negative
impacts of unsafe cell phone use and
performing cutting-edge research on cell
phone radiation. However, neither study
found sperm count was affected.
"Our study showed the total time of
exposure to the cell phone is much
more important than the relatively short
duration of intense exposure during
phone calls," the researchers noted.
Since the preliminary study was small-scale,
the researchers concluded that the results
indicated a need for larger-scaled studies.

Tips To Maintain Healthy Joints While

Running

Managing joint pain is extremely

important but difficult for any runner. So
it is essential to keep a check on your
body while jogging.
A fitness expert shares his tips in
managing joint pain to help prevent
sporting injuries and maintain healthy
strong joints.
* Maintain healthy weight: This can be
beneficial on joints. One study claimed
that losing about a pound of weight
delivers almost a four pound reduction
in knee joint load for each step.

* Warm up/cool down: Invest time to

ensure the body is prepared for exercise
by undertaking warm-up activities at
the start of your session. The cool-down
phase will help you to gradually reduce
the intensity of activity and soreness in
the joints and muscles.
* Strengthen muscles and increase
flexibility: Flexibility injury can occur
when a joint is taken outside of its
comfortable range of motion. A good
test of strength and flexibility is the wall
squat. Stand facing a wall, with your feet

just wider than hip-width and your hands

on your temples. Try to squat down so
your thighs are parallel to the floor,
without your knees or any other part of
your body touching the wall on the way
up or down. Aim to complete five squats
standing just an inch away from the wall.
* Allow time for recovery: Knee injury
can increase the chances of developing
and aggravating osteoarthritis in many
people. Should injury occur, allow
enough time for full recovery and seek
professional advice if symptoms persist.

Simple Rules For A Good Sleep

Prepare a set of rules for sound sleep and

religiously follow them.
Here are some of the sleep rules to stay
healthy.
- Set a seven days-a-week schedule:
Go to bed at the same time every night
and wake up at the same time naturally,
including holidays. Choose a time that's
a minimum of eight hours before you

need to wake up and follow it for one

week straight. If you still feel tired you
need an earlier bedtime (try just 15 to
30 minutes more). Once you can get up
in the morning alarm-free and feel alert
most of the day, you've hit it just right.
- Cut caffeine after 2 p.m: Most people
feel tired late afternoon and feel the urge
to have caffeine. It will definitely perk

you up but it could linger long after

you've left work.
- Dim your devices: Many are addicted
to checking social networking sites
before sleeping. But the emitted light
of the device is a problem. Avoid any
electronics at least one hour before
bed so that you don't need the sleep
hormone.

Simple Food Allergy In Kids May Lead To

Severe One

Children who outgrow one type of food

allergy may develop a more severe and
persistent type of allergy to the same
food, experts say.
They suggest that physicians and parents
carefully monitor children with food
allergies to recognise early signs of
eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) - a severe
and often painful allergy that has been
increasing in recent years.
"These two types of allergy have some
elements in common, but patients with EoE
usually do not go on to develop tolerance
to the foods that trigger EoE," said
paediatric allergist Jonathan M. Spergel
from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
EoE involves swelling and inflammation
of the esophagus. Often painful, EoE
may cause weight loss, vomiting,
heartburn and swallowing difficulties.

It can affect any age group, but is often

discovered first in children experiencing
feeding difficulties and failure to thrive.
The researchers team compared EoE
with IgE-mediated food allergy - the
more familiar type of food allergy.
Nuts, eggs or milk, for example, may
trigger hives, other skin reactions,
vomiting or other symptoms.
The
researchers
performed
a
retrospective analysis of 1,375 children
for EoE between 2000-12.
Of that number, 425 children could be
shown to have a definite food causing
their condition - most commonly milk,
egg, soy and wheat.
Within that subgroup, 17 patients had
developed EoE to a food after having
outgrown IgE-mediated allergy to that
specific food.

"The pattern we found in those 17 patients

suggests that the two types of food
allergy operate by different mechanisms
and cause different functional changes,"
Spergel said.
"However, this pattern also raises the
possibility that prior IgE-mediated food
allergy may predispose a patient to
developing EoE to the same food."
According to the research, patients who
undergo desensitisation therapy for IgEmediated foods allergies subsequently
develop EoE to the same food - a fact that
physicians should consider in managing
care for patients with food allergies.
In desensitisation therapy, a clinician
exposes a patient to miniscule amount of
an allergy-producing food, then gradually
increases the amount - aiming for the
patient to become tolerant to that food.

Shivering May Be Secret Of Slimming

A new study has suggested that regular
exposure to mild cold may be a healthy and
sustainable way to help people lose weight.
First author of the study said that they
hypothesize that the thermal environment
affects human health and more specifically
that frequent mild cold exposure can
significantly affect our energy expenditure
over sustained time periods.
Marken Lichtenbelt and his colleagues
from Maastricht University started

studying the effects of mild cold about

10 years ago, mostly because it had
received so little attention and found the
evidence to suggest that a more variable
indoor temperature- one that is allowed
to drift along with temperatures outsidemight be beneficial, although long-term
effects still await further investigation.
The Netherlands team also found that
people get used to the cold over time.
After six hours a day in the cold for

a period of 10 days, people in their

study increased brown fat, felt more
comfortable and shivered less at 15
degree Celsius.
In young and middle-aged people at
least, non-shivering heat production
can account for a few percent up to 30
percent of the body's energy budget, they
said. That means lower temperatures can
significantly affect the amount of energy
a person expends overall.

Fish has long been hailed as 'brain food,'

and now a new study has revealed that
fish oil supplementation can help ward
off diseases such as Alzheimer's.
It was found that people with higher levels
of the omega-3 fatty acids, which are found
in fish oil, may have larger brain volumes
in old age equivalent to preserving one to
two years of brain health.
Shrinking brain volume is a sign of
Alzheimer's disease as well as normal
aging.
For the study, the levels of omega-3
fatty acids EPA+DHA in red blood cells
were tested in 1,111 women who were
part of the Women's Health Initiative
Memory Study. Eight years later, when
the women were an average age of 78,
MRI scans were taken to measure their
brain volume.
It was found that those with higher

levels of omega-3s had larger total brain

volumes eight years later. Those with
twice as high levels of fatty acids (7.5
vs. 3.4 percent) had a 0.7 percent larger
brain volume.
"These higher levels of fatty acids can
be achieved through diet and the use
of supplements, and the results suggest
that the effect on brain volume is the
equivalent of delaying the normal loss

of brain cells that comes with aging by

one to two years," study author James
V. Pottala, PhD, of the University
of South Dakota in Sioux Falls and
Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc., in
Richmond, Va, said.
Those with higher levels of omega-3s
also had a 2.7 percent larger volume in
the hippocampus area of the brain, which
plays an important role in memory.

Some Foods Women Should Have Every

Day

When was the last time you ate some

fennel? If naturopath Emma Sutherland
had her way, women would be consuming
a daily serve of this leafy veg. Here,
Sutherland, the co-author of 50 Foods That
Will Change Your Life (Penguin), names
the five foods that women should have
daily to help prevent cancers and chronic
disease as well as look and feel great.
Kale
This is the star food for cancer
prevention, Sutherland says. Its
high in the compound glucosinolate,
which when eaten regularly can help
the body metabolise oestrogen more
effectively, reducing the risk of breast
and ovarian cancers. Its also loaded
with antioxidant vitamins C and A, and
vitamin K for bone and blood health.
Boost your intake: Chop leaves finely
and stir-fry with olive oil, garlic, onion
and chilli, or use in a green smoothie
with celery, apple and pineapple.
Reasons to eat kale
Health nut Gwyneth Paltrow swears by
it, its popping up on every juice stall
menu and sales worldwide are soaring.
So why eat kale? It's:
Low calorie, high fibre and fat free.
Higher in iron than beef.
High in vitamin K, which is
necessary for bone health.
Filled with antioxidants which
protect against cancer.
An anti-inflammatory, so it can help
fight conditions such as arthritis.
Good for your heart and can help
lower cholesterol.
High in vitamin A, which is good for
vision and skin.
Broccoli
Like kale, this has amazing anti-cancer
properties, Sutherland says. The
phytonutrient diindolylmethane breaks
down the bad oestrogens our body
absorbs from the environment. These are
a factor in oestrogen-dependent cancers.
It also supports the liver to clear the
body of toxins, and is high in vitamins
and minerals.
Boost your intake: Eat florets raw, or
steam and mix with olive oil, garlic and
orange zest.
Reasons to eat broccoli
The top 5 reasons to eat broccoli are:
1) A high intake of broccoli has been
found to reduce the risk of aggressive
prostate cancer and may also help
prevent heart disease.
2) Averaging just four weekly servings

604.510.4088

of veggies like broccoli, cabbage, and

cauliflower slashed the risk of dying
from any disease by 26% among 6,100
people studied for 28 years.
3) Broccoli contains a flavonoid called
kaempferol which has anti-inflammatory
properties. This makes broccoli potentially
useful in assisting with chronic inflammatory
ailments, such as arthritis or gout.
4) This dark green veg also helps your
body absorb vitamin D. This is due to
broccolis high levels of vitamins A
and K, which both aid in the healthy
absorption of vitamin D.
5) Broccoli may have a positive impact on
our body's ability to naturally detox. This
is possibly due to three phytonutrients
found in unique combination in broccoli
- glucoraphanin, gluconasturtiian, and
glucobrassicin. This nutritional trio is
able to support all steps in body's detox
process, including neutralization and
elimination of unwanted contaminants.
How to eat broccoli
Broccoli is usually boiled or steamed
but may be eaten raw and has become
popular as a raw vegetable in hors
d'uvre trays.
As the benefits of broccoli are thought to
greatly reduce if boiled, light steaming
is a far healthier way of cooking it.
Scientists have also discovered that
steaming broccoli lightly releases the
maximum amount of sulforaphane.
Fennel
Its high in vitamin C, fibre, potassium
and folate, but its fennels anethole
compound, which gives its aniseed
taste and reduces bloating, that prompts
Sutherland to call it womans best
friend. Anti-inflammatory properties
can ward off cancers and also offer relief
from menstrual pain.
Boost your intake: Saut with a little
olive oil and pepper, use the inner
layers in a green salad, or make a tea by
steeping seeds in hot water.
Carrots
The body converts carrots betacarotene
to vitamin A to support thyroid function,
which controls metabolism, Sutherland
says. Plus it keeps eyes healthy and
helps reduce the risk of breast cancer in
pre-menopause and ovarian cancer in
post-menopause. High fibre makes them

david@fijitimescanada.com

ideal for weight loss.

Boost your intake: Dip batons in
hummus or tzatziki, or serve grated with
seeds and oil and vinegar dressing.
Reasons to eat carrot
Raw, boiled, mashed or roasted - find out
why carrots are such a great addition to
your diet.
These are the top 5 reasons why carrots
are beneficial:
1) Carrots are a great source of dietary
fibre, manganese, magnesium, folate,
potassium and phosphorus.
2) Rich in antioxidants, carrots also
contain chlorine and sulfur that help the
liver rid itself of toxic waste
3) As per the urban legend, carrots aid
good eyesight, but also they contain
calcium and have properties that may
help protect against lung cancer.
4) A study published in the May 1990
issue of the journal "Nutrition Reviews"
found that consuming large amounts of
fruits and vegetables high in carotenoids
-- a major ingredient in carrots and a
precursor to vitamin A -- is associated
with a lower risk of lung cancer.
5) Carrots are low in calories and
therefore an ideal snack for those
watching their weight
How to eat carrots
Beta carotene found in carrot is a fat
soluble vitamin meaning a small amount
of fat is required for it to be absorbed.
Do this by adding a drizzle of olive oil
to roasted carrots or a dollop of organic
butter to carrot mash.
The sweetness of carrots allows the
vegetable to be used in some fruit-based
dishes. Grated carrots are used in carrot
cakes, as well as carrot puddings, and
they can also be used with fruits in jam
and preserves.
Carrot juice is also widely available as a
health drink, or blended with fruits and
other vegetables in smoothies.
Watercress
This is high in vitamin K, which is
essential for blood clotting, and helps
stimulate collagen and bone cell
production; glucosinolate compounds
make it a cancer-fighter, Sutherland says.
Boost your intake: You absorb vitamin
K best with fat, so add as a garnish to
salmon.

How To Deal With Misbehaving Kids

Recently, I was at dinner with two other
families. Another guests nine-year-old
son, Sean, was provoking his 12-yearold sister, Madeline, taunting her, getting
in her space. The sister responded with a
screechy I HATE YOU!!
What ensued was painful to watch, but
highly predictable.
The kids dad, clearly embarrassed by
their behavior, says, Both of you, knock
it off, right now!
Madeline: But I didnt DO anything.
Dad: Its not okay to yell I hate you to
your brother.
Madeline, half screaming, half whining:
He was BUGGING me!
Dad: If you guys cant get along, we
are going to go home. I mean it. This
behavior is unacceptable.
Dad turns back to the rest of the adults
and rolls his eyes. We chuckle a little.
Weve all been there.
It seems harmless to put a big consequence
out there, like threatening to leave a party
the kids are enjoying. Odds are, theyll
shape up so they can stay.
But not two minutes later, the brother is
at it again, steering his scooter too close
to his sister and her friend. GO AWAY!
Youre such an IDIOT! she screams
with emotion that only comes when
someone is pushing your buttons.
Dad assesses the situation; the host is
starting to serve dinner. There is no way
he is going to make good on his threat to
leave right now. What should he do?
We all make empty threats sometimes,
especially in the heat of the moment,
hoping to coerce better behavior out of
our kids. But there are several problems
with threatening to do something and
then not following through on it.
Most obviously, empty threats weaken
our influence. Kids are smart; once they
know that we are unlikely to followthrough on a threatened consequence,
our words have much less meaning. This
is especially true in certain situations,
like being in public or at a party, where
kids know its more likely that we
parents WONT follow through. So they
learn to not pay much attention to those
threats at all.
This means that we, the parents, arent
fully in chargeand, consciously or
unconsciously, this makes our children
insecure. Kids need someone who has
been around the block a few times to
be in charge. They need structure and
rulesor they start to feel insecure.

604.510.4088

But there may be an even bigger

problem: It lacks integrity when we say
we are going to do something hard, then
dont do it. Our children will behave
like we do, especially as they grow into
teenagers and adults. When they face
a challenge, do we want them to tell
everyone that they are going to do the
hard thing, then pretend like they never
said they would do it? Of course not,
but we can only expect them to have as
much integrity (and commitment, and
courage) as we have.
Fortunately, there are much more
effective ways to deal with our childrens
undesirable behavior. Heres a step-bystep plan.
1. Make a list of the privileges your kids
enjoy regularly, and would miss if they
lost. These could be TV time, dessert,
lessons or athletic practices, rides to
school when they can take the bus
instead, etc.
2. Pick something that you can easily
enforceone standard, predictable
consequence. Perhaps your pre-teen
daughter is glued to her phone, or your
son particularly loves watching sports
on TV, or you already have a time-out
routine that is working.
3. Decide what battles you are going to
fight. Kids benefit from having a bright
line painted for them. What is always
off-limits? For example, in our house,
calling other people names, saying you
hate someone, intentionally making
someone unhappy or angry, hitting,
talking-back, and cheating at UNO are
always against the rules.
4. Have a family meeting to talk about
this. Tell your kids that you are making
a concerted effort to say what you
mean, and mean what you say. Give

david@fijitimescanada.com

them permission to hold you to it. My

kids throw a pretend flag in the air like
a football ref and say E-flag! (E is for
empty threat) if I say something they
suspect I wont follow through on.
5. In the family meeting, review your
family rules. Tell them what violations
you are going to enforce, and exactly
how you are going to enforce them.
6. Heres how to enforce those rules.
When kids misbehave, issue one warning
by saying, This is your warning,
in a calm voice. (Kids benefit from a
warning, because it gives them a chance
to self-correct. This will help foster their
self-discipline, so eventually they dont
need you at all.) Then, if they cross the
line again, they lose the pre-decided
privilegewhich you can let them know
as calmly as possible, such as by saying,
Please bring me your phone, or, Im
sorry, you wont be having dessert
tonight. Or calmly pick your toddler up
and put her in time-out.
This is key: you dont need to explain
what they did wrong, even if they act
like they have no idea what they are
doing wrong. If kids can learn the
rules to Candyland, they can learn your
family rules. Kids know when they are
misbehaving; dont let them fool you.
If they really arent sure what they did,
theyll figure it out fast if they know they
are about to lose a privilege.
7. Be very, very consistent. As consistent
as humanly possible. Most kids will
seriously test you for at least a week,
some longer. Stick to your guns. Imagine
you are refereeing a televised soccer
match: The rules are clear. Your job is
clear. You cant overlook violations
mid-game and expect the players to still
consider you the ref.

Eat Slowly To Avoid Overeating

The concept of eating slowly as a means
to avoid overeating is based on the
simple fact that your brain needs about
20 minutes to get the "signal" that you
are not hungry anymore and that you
can stop eating. Our body needs time for
the digestive and hormonal processes to
take place at a point or phase far along
enough to generate the "satisfied signal".
Prior to the invention of convenience
food, more chewing and slower eating
was normal and therefore people were
likely to reach the 20 minute natural
stopping signal without having to be
conscious of slowing down. However,
given our fast food culture, this set point
is often missed because the meal is well
and truly over before reaching it!
Eating slowly can help you to better
understand your real hunger signals and
can help you to recognize reasons for
faster eating, such as emotions or simply
liking the taste of a food. However,
eating slowly is not a decision that you
make on the spur of the moment; rather,
it's a habit that you'll need to persevere
with and acquire with practice.
Reprogram your mind. Do not even
attempt to acquire the habit of eating
slowly before mentally rehearsing it in
your mind for at least 21 days. Relax and
use your imagination to create mental
images, virtual pleasant experiences that
your brain will register and remember.
As part of this visualization process,
imagine yourself lean and fit and eating
slowly and savoring your food.
Trying to taste both the flavor and the
texture; imagining how the texture
changes as the food is slowly broken
down by your saliva.
Have a glass of water to drink before,
with and after your meal to get the
sensation of fullness in your stomach.
Be sure to visualize a desired end result
such as a lean, fit and energetic body.
Also see in your mind the end result:
how you are going to look in that dress
or those jeans, suit, etc.
Consider keeping a food journal during
this time, to map out the triggers
surrounding your hunger. Note where you
are, what you're eating, how fast you've
consumed and how you feel after eating
it (especially how hungry or otherwise
you feel). This will be a useful source of
information to draw on, as each person's
hunger triggers and set points differ.
Remove as many processed foods from
your pantry or food storage as possible.
Eating slowly isn't just about slowing
down the chewing; it's also about
slowing down your dietary choices and
preparation processes. If you're worried
that you don't have time to prepare food

604.510.4088

from scratch, ask yourself whether your

internal health is as important to you as it
should be or if you'd rather fast-track to
degenerative disease by putting nutritious
food low on your list of priorities. Start
making time for healthier food because
a busy life can only be fueled by healthy
choices and slowing down to cook is an
act of caring for yourself and can even
be therapeutic in a busy life. As you
toss out the processed food, replace it
with healthy, unprocessed or much less
processed choices. For example:
Remove white pasta and white rice and
replace with wholemeal pasta and brown rice.
Remove pre-made meals in cans,
packages and frozen forms and replace
with the ingredients that go to making
that item from scratch.
Remove processed desserts and replace with
fruit, yogurt and healthy dessert choices.
Try to eat when you start feeling hungry.
The problem with leaving eating until
you're starving and feel like eating the
proverbial horse, then you're bound to
eat quickly and therefore risk eating more
than needed. Feeling so hungry that you're
dizzy, weak and irritable means that you've
deprived your body of much-needed food
for too long and the payback will include
an inability to eat your food in a relaxed
and enjoyable way. Instead, you'll be
obliged to shovel in the food to try and
alleviate the symptoms of weakness and
feeling irritable won't help your cause any!
Always relax before you start eating.
Take a few deep breaths through the nose
and out through the mouth. As you do
so, hold your breath briefly and exhale
slowly by the mouth. Get rid of the stress
before you start eating in this way, you
start to remove any risk of comfort eating,
where food is used to alleviate stress and
bring yourself to focus on relieving stress
independently of food.
Remind yourself of the rewards (good
health, good looks, etc.).
Look at the clock and mentally add 20
minutes. That is your goal: take at least
20 minutes to enjoy your food.
Drink a glass of water and/or eat a small
bowl of light soup before your main
dish. Drink water with your food. This
will help your sensation of fullness.
Be aware that not everyone advocates
drinking during a meal though, as some
people believe that this can dilute the
nutrients from your meal. However, this
theory doesn't convince other nutrition
specialists, who believe water actually
aids in digestion. In other words, listen to
your own body's reaction to consuming
liquids during a meal and go with that.
Put the fork down after putting food in
your mouth. Take a sip of water, engage

david@fijitimescanada.com

in conversation. Savor each bite, make it

a pleasant experience so you will want
to repeat it. This is the essence of slow
eating and it's about reconnecting with
the people you're sharing a meal with
and treating meal time as a true break,
worthy of your attention and cherishing
Concentrate on your food and really
enjoy it. Your brain will keep a record
of that pleasant experience and this new
way of eating will become automatic
(second nature) with practice. This means
not eating in front of the television, not
reading while eating and not trying to surf
the internet when eating. Distractions
from the food belittle the value of the
food and encourage you to think you've
eaten less than you have and your ever
working brain will be likely to trick your
appetite into thinking you need to eat
more food. Give your brain and body a
rest and truly focus on the food before
you. Savor it, appreciate it and be present
for the food and the ritual of eating.
Dedicate at least 20 minutes to finish your
meal. Have a wall clock in plain view
from the table to adjust your eating speed;
eat your last portion really slowly. If you
are still hungry after 20 minutes, it means
you are eating too fast! Another way to
see this is to recognize when you feel
pleasantly full or neither hungry nor full.
There is a "sensor" in our brain (in the
hypothalamus) that needs about 20
minutes to get activated (give or take a
few minutes for individual differences).
Digestive and hormonal processes need
to take place before our brain realizes we
are not hungry anymore; we could feel
bloated and still be hungry before this
recognition of satiation is set off.
If you feel still a little bit hungry after
this, stop anyway. Drink a little bit more
water. This is where you will need to
use a little willpower and to recall your
motivation and visualizations. In five
more minutes, you won't want to eat
more, even if food is delicious, because
you will feel satisfied and full.
Use distractions if visualization on your
reason for eating slowly fails at this
point. Go for a walk, watch a favorite
TV show, write a poem, call a friend on
the phone, go for a swim, knit a sweater,
feed an animal, groom your pet, wash
the car, change the sheets, etc.
Having a hot drink can help to overcome
residual hunger feelings. Try a coffee,
tea, warm water with lemon, etc.
If you're still feeling hungry after eating
slowly, you might have nutritional
deficiencies or an illness; there may also
be continuing underlying psychological
problems. It is wise to speak to your doctor
about this if it's still the case for you.

Former Fifa Vice-President Jack Warner

'Banned For Life' From Football

FIFA's ethics committee has banned

former vice-president Jack Warner from
all football activity for life for a long list
of "misconduct".
Mr Warner, 72, is one of the key
defendants in a US investigation into
world football that has rocked its
governing body.
The former Caribbean federation
president "was found to have committed
many and various acts of misconduct
continuously and repeatedly during his
time as an official in different highranking and influential positions at FIFA
and CONCACAF (Confederation of
North, Central American and Caribbean
Association Football)", the Ethics
Committee statement said.
Mr Warner is the second FIFA official
to be suspended for life after American
Chuck Blazer the one-time
powerbroker of North American football
who turned whistleblower for the FBI.
The 72-year-old's ban covers all football
activity at both a national and international
level and is effective from September 25.
"In his positions as a football official, he
was a key player in schemes involving
the offer, acceptance, and receipt of
undisclosed and illegal payments, as
well as other money-making schemes,"
the statement said.
Mr Warner is also fighting extradition
from his homeland in Trinidad and
Tobago to the United States to face 12

charges of wire fraud, racketeering and

money laundering related to the ongoing
FIFA corruption scandal.
He faces a hearing in his homeland in
December.
US authorities, who have charged 14
FIFA officials and sports marketing
executives of soliciting and receiving
more than $241 million in bribes and
kickbacks over two decades, applied in
July for Mr Warner's extradition.
Mr Warner has previously been a member
of parliament as well as president of both
the North and Central American Federation
and the Caribbean Football Union.
He is accused, among other things, of
buying the television rights to the 2010
and 2014 World Cup tournaments from
FIFA president Sepp Blatter for grossly
deflated sums.
This contract allegedly allowed Mr
Warner to make a comfortable profit on
the resale of the television rights.
Mr Blatter is the target of a probe into
"criminal mismanagement" at FIFA by
Swiss prosecutors, focusing on the 2005
television rights sale to the Caribbean
Football Union and a two million Swiss
franc ($2.9 million) payment to UEFA
president Michel Platini.
French football legend Platini has been
questioned by Swiss investigators, but
has not been named as a suspect.
Swiss authorities also approved a US
extradition request for ex-Costa Rican

be sent to the US in connection with the
FIFA scandal.
The US Department of Justice issued an
arrest warrant in May for Mr Li, accusing
him of taking bribes in connection with
the sale of marketing rights for World
Cup 2018 qualifying games.
Mr Li, a Costa Rican citizen, was one
of the seven FIFA officials taken into
custody in a dawn raid on a luxury
Zurich hotel on May 27.

Salman Khan Doesnt Care About The

Oscars

Superstar Salman Khan, whose latest

Bajrangi Bhaijaan was one of the movies
competing for Indias official Oscar
entry consideration, says for him the
audiences reaction is more important
than being selected for a ceremony
like the Academy Awards. Chaitanya
Tamhanes Marathi film Court saw
off competition from blockbusters like
Baahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, to
represent India in the best foreign film
category at the Oscars next year. We
made the film for our audiences here..
(for) people of Asia. People have liked
the film in India, Pakistan and now in
China. I dont make films for business,
Salman said.
The Dabangg star insists he and the
films team worked really hard to make
an entertaining movie. It is painful
(working on a film) and it looks like we
are having fun but we are not. My job
as an actor is to put myself in trouble, to
go against age and against everything.
So, when the people go to theatres
they should have fun. My job ends
there. After that what (film) goes where
(Oscars) doesnt matter It doesnt
interest me.
The Kabir Khan-directed blockbuster
is about a young Pakistani girl, played
by Harshaali Malhotra, who gets lost in
India and eventually reunites with her
family with Salmans help.
The 49-year-old actor is returning for
the sixth time to host the ninth edition
of controversial celebrity reality show
Bigg Boss.
I feel one should not go overboard.
There has to be a limit to everything. My
mother fails to understand why people
all of a sudden fight in the house and then

there are times when nothing happens,

he said.
Educated people, celebrities who earn
in lakhs behave like this. Some do it to
stay, some are correct, some are wrong.

My only concern is when they come out

of the house, they should be okay. They
come to me, I guide them, he said.
The actor said he doesnt consider Bigg
Boss as a game show. Contrary to
rumours, Salman said he has no say in
the selection of contestants.
I am not involved at all. If I had my way
then half of the house would be filled
with my people. I am not even aware
when people I know or are friends with
me are going on the show. I come to
know (who the participants are) on the
day of the shoot, he said.
Going by the theme Double Trouble of
the show, when asked how he overcomes
the troubles of his life, Salman said, I
am working hard towards it.

Sussanne Khan Rubbishes Rumours About

Marriage With Arjun Rampal

Superstar Hrithik Roshans former wife

Sussanne Khan has slammed reports that
she is set to tie the knot with actor Arjun
Rampal, saying she is a proud single
mother. It has been long speculated that
the interior designers friendship with
Arjun, who is married to former model
Mehr Jessia, was the cause of her split
from Hrithik, in 2013 after 13 years of
marriage. The former couple has two
sons Hrehaan, seven and Hridhaan, five.
Recently reports surfaced that Sussanne
was set to walk down the aisle with one
of Hrithiks close friends. Just earlier
this week, it was reported that Sussanne
and Arjun were spotted at a coffee shope.
Rubbishing the rumours, Sussanne said,
Persistent speculation in the media has
made me realise that idle Bollywood
gossip mongers, who are influential,
are insistent on spreading rumours and
lies about me. Stories are fabricated on
upcoming weddings and meetings in
coffee shops.
It is irresponsible press if incorrect
stories are published. There are families
and human feelings involved and it hurts
people when false gossip is passed off
as true. I am a single working mother
and take tremendous pride in the way I
live, she further said in her statement.
Arjun and Mehr, who are parents to two
daughters, have been hit by split rumours
for some time now.

Asha Bhosle's Son Hemant Passes

Away
Veteran singer Asha Bhosle's son
Hemant died in Scotland after losing his
battle with cancer. He was 66.
Hemant's death comes three years after
the 82-year-old singer lost her daughter,
Varsha, in 2012. Varsha was suffering
from depression and committed suicide.
Hemant's cousin, Radha Mangeshkar, said
they had hoped for his recovery but the
musician passed away on September 26.
"He was suffering from cancer for past
three years... the family was in trauma
since then. We did hope that he would
get well. He passed away in Scotland

on September 26. He was 66," Radha,

Bhosle's niece said.
The family was set to celebrate
Lata Mangeshkar's 86th birthday on
September 27 but they cancelled it after
they got to know about the demise of
Asha's eldest son, she said.
"We had Ganpati Visarjan on September
27, but kept it very low key. We did
not celebrate her (Lata Mangeshkar's)
birthday," Radha said.
Hemant composed music in films like
"Damaad", "Nazrana Pyar Ka" and
"Shradhanjali".
