Informative: Demonstrative Speech

SPEECH OUTLINE WORKSHEET

Topic

: ___Definition, Symptoms and Examples of Phobia.

Specific Purpose

: To inform the audience about the definition, symptoms

and examples of phobia.

Central Idea

: The definition of phobia, the symptoms of phobia and the

examples of phobia.
I.

Introduction (Your goal here is to draw us into your speech...)

A.

Attention Material (This step helps us focus our attention on you and your
message. It is suggested that you begin with a story, quote, video statistic,
definition, use of suspense, etc. Never begin with, "Hi I am ___ and today i am
going to talk about ___."):
Have any of you ever experienced a phobia? Are you sure that is a phobia, not a
random fear? Can you identify the symptoms of phobia? In order to answer the
questions, allow me to bring you to the world of phobia.

B.

Tie to Audience (This step informs the audience how your topic will relate to
them. Tell us how we can use your information presented to us today in a very
practical way. Give us a reason to listen here.):
Why am I choosing this topic? Because we never know the real definition of
phobia and we used to interpret the phobia as a simple fear against something.
Therefore, I want us to discover the world of phobia.

C.

Credibility Material (Here the student reveals to the audience why he/she is
credible, can be trusted, knows the materials, etc.)
When I was 12 years old, I have a somniphobia, a fear of falling asleep. I was
afraid if something might happen to me when Im sleeping and I have a lot of
nightmares. After a while, I got some treatments and I recovered from
somniphobia. In that case, I believe I can deliver my speech very well as I have
experienced the phobia.

D. Thesis & Preview: (Here summarize your presentation in one sentence by

previewing the main points of the speech). For example: Today I will show you

II. Body (Here I have listed 3 main points and 3 subpoints per main point -remember 2-5 points is always appropriate!!!)
A. Main Point #1
1. Subpoint #1:
A phobia is an irrational fear, a kind of anxiety disorder in which the sufferer has a
relentless dread of a situation, living creature, place or thing.
2.

Subpoint #2:
If confronted with the source of their phobia, the person will suffer enormous
distress, which can interfere with their normal function; it can sometimes lead to
total panic. For some people, even thinking about their phobia is immensely
distressing.

3.

Subpoint #3:
A phobia starts when a person begins organizing their lives around avoiding the
object of their fear. A phobia is much more serious than a simple fear.

Conclusion

A. Brakelight (signals the end such as, "To sum things up"):
In a nutshell, a phobia is an irrational fear and it might happen in any
circumstances in the future or even right now.
B. Summary (reviews the main points of the speech in the order covered):
So, I have already covered what is phobia, the symptoms and signs of phobia. And
the final part is the examples of phobia.
C. Tie Back to Audience (tells us again how we benefit from knowing this, show the
connection between your group, the topic and the audience):
Somehow we might not realize that the fear we have against something is actually
a phobia.
By gaining this knowledge, you can discover the other side of yourself
