Halloween Safety Guide

Though the Department of The Navy recognizes this date as the

establishment of the U.S. Navy, there is no official designated location as the
"birthplace" of the Navy, since a number of ports played a significant role in
the start of the Navy.
From the US Navy's Historical website
http://www.history.navy.mil/birthday.htm:

The United States Navy traces its origins to the

Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress
established on 13 October 1775, by authorizing the
procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of
two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions
ships supplying the British Army in America. The
legislation also established a Naval Committee to
supervise the work. All together, the Continental
Navy numbered some fifty ships over the course of
the war, with approximately twenty warships
active at its maximum strength. After the American
War for Independence, Congress sold the surviving
ships of the Continental Navy and released the
seamen and officers.

Following the ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1789, Congress acted

upon authority granted to them in the Constitution, and in 1794 ordered the
construction of Naval vessels, placing them under the administration of the
War Department for the subsequent four years.
On April 30th of 1798, The U.S. Congress established The Department Of The
Navy.

swallowers help set the mood by providing their own unique brand of entertainment. Of course, theme weekends might
reflect a slightly different era or culture. In October, the weekends include Festival Friday! (10/2), and Sweet
Endings! (10/3 & 10/4). Admission is $21.95 an adult / $12.95 a child at the gate.

Halloween Safety Guide

Halloween is popular with everyone kids to adults and the American Red Cross has some safety tips people can follow to
stay safe this Halloween while enjoying the festivities.
1. Use only flame-resistant costumes.
2. Plan the Trick-or-Treat route - make sure adults know where children are going. A parent or responsible adult should
accompany young children as they make their way around the neighborhood.
3. Make sure the Trick-or-Treaters have a flashlight. Add reflective tape to costumes and Trick-or-Treat bags. Have everyone
wear light-colored clothing to be seen.
4. Visit only the homes that have a porch light on. Accept treats at the door never go inside.
5. Instead of masks which can cover the eyes and make it hard to see, use face paint instead.
6. Walk only on the sidewalks, not in the street. If no sidewalk is available, walk at the edge of the roadway, facing traffic.
Look both ways before crossing the street, and cross only at the corner. Dont cut across yards or use alleys. Dont cross
between parked cars.
7. Be cautious around strange animals, especially dogs.
8. If you are welcoming Trick-or-Treaters, sweep leaves from your sidewalks and steps.
9. Clear your porch or front yard of obstacles someone could trip over.
10. Restrain your pets.
