MATERIALS
2.1
2.2
General
2.1.1
If there is no suitable piping classification for the required service, the Owners Engineer
shall be notified immediately.
2.1.2
Materials specified under each piping class in Appendix 1 are the minimum acceptable.
Substitutions of equivalent materials shall be subject to approval in writing by the Owners
Engineer.
2.1.3
If there is no suitable component for the Contractor in a pipe class, a custom component
may be provided with written approval from the Owners Engineer. A SP item number
shall be assigned by the Owners Engineer to identify these items. The design of all custom
fittings shall have a CRN as required by CSA B51.
2.1.4
All branch connections shall be PWHT as per the criteria defined by ASME B31.3 Section
331.1.3
Pipe
2.2.1
A minimum wall thickness of Sch 80 shall be used for carbon steel pipe 1 NPS and
smaller, and Sch 80S for stainless steel pipe 1 NPS and smaller, unless stated
otherwise.
2.2.2
A minimum wall thickness of Sch 160 shall be used for small bore pipe (NPS - 1 ) in
vibrating service. Lines in vibrating service will be identified in the line list.
2.2.3
2.2.4
2.2.5
Electric resistance welded pipe may be used as an alternative to seamless pipe with
written approval from the Owners Engineer.
2.2.6
2.2.7
All carbon steel pipe dimensions must conform to ASME B36.10M and all stainless steel
pipe dimensions must conform to ASME B36.19M.
2.2.8
2.2.9
2.2.10 Threaded and coupled piping shall be supplied with taper threaded couplings in
accordance with ASME B1.20.1.
2.2.11 For pipe with a longitudinal weld seam fabricated using a filler material, the maximum
hardness of the weld and the heat affected zone (HAZ) shall not exceed 225 BHN.
2.2.12 All pipe shall be supplied free of defects, dirt and debris.

Valves
2.3.1
Valves are indicated by tag number in each line classification in Appendix 1. Only the
valves listed or approved equivalents shall be used unless a valve is assigned a SP item
number on the P&IDs.
2.3.2
Fittings
2.4.1
Welding fittings shall have bore to match pipe ID. Misalignment exceeding 1.6 mm will be
corrected in accordance with ASME B31.3. Taper bored fittings by anyone but the fitting
Seller is prohibited unless prior written approval is obtained from the Owners Engineer.
2.4.2
Fittings taper bored by the Seller shall be re-stamped with the thinner wall thickness.
2.4.3
Reducing butt weld fittings shall have same schedule as adjacent pipe on both ends.
2.4.4
Elbows shall be long radius unless the Owners Engineer approves short radius bends
where limited space is available.
2.4.5
The out of roundness of fittings and elbows shall not exceed 4% of the nominal diameter of
the fitting. Sharp edges on the back of elbows are not acceptable.
2.4.6
Socket-welded and threaded fitting selection is based on ASME B16.11-1996 Table 2. This
table is as follows:

Bore of flanges shall match pipe ID, otherwise the requirements of paragraph 2.4.1 above
shall apply.
2.5.2
Flanges with a rating in the range class 150 to 900 inclusive, shall have a raised face and
flanges with a rating of class 1500 or greater shall have a ring joint. Substitution of ASME
approved clamp type connections or other flange types in the classes specified shall be
subject to approval in writing by the Owners Engineer.
2.5.3
All flanges to be used with SPWD gaskets shall have a surface finish between 125 and 250
in AARH.

5.2.1
5.2.2
Components fabricated from carbon steel shall be killed low carbon steel. When the
components are intended for welding they shall also have the following properties:
5.2.2.1 When trace elements are shown on the carbon steel MTR the CE shall be less
than or equal to 0.45%. The CE is defined as follows:
CE = % C + % Mn/6 + (% Cr + % Mo + % V) /5 + (% Ni + % Cu)/15
5.2.2.2 When trace elements are not shown on the carbon steel MTR the CE is defined as
follows and shall be less than 0.04%:
CE = % C + % Mn/6
5.2.3
All carbon steel butt welds greater than 9.5 mm, that are exposed to sour service, shall be
PWHT. For butt welds of pipe with wall thickness less than 9.5 mm, PWHT is not required
if the weldment is hardness tested to be 22 HRC or less as required by NACE MR-0175
latest edition. Testing shall include the filler, the HAZ (both sides) and the base material
(both sides).
All carbon steel fillet welds, that are exposed to sour service, shall be PHWT if the
weldment is hardness tested to be greater than 22 HRC or if the weld meets the criteria for
PWHT as defined by ASME B31.3 Section 331.1.3.
o
PWHT of carbon steel materials shall be at a minimum temperature of 620 C for a hold
time of one hour per inch of nominal wall thickness, or a minimum total hold time of one
hour. After post weld heat treatment, the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) shall not exceed 22
HRC for low carbon steel materials.

Threaded connections shall only be used where allowed by the appropriate pipe class and
then only where socket weld connections are impractical.
