SIT-SIE2002 Tutorial Sheet 3

1. Three pipes deliver water (at a steady rate) at 20 to a large pipe as shown.
Velocity 2 = 5/ and the exit flow rate 4 = 1203 /. It is known that increasing
3 by 20%, 4 increases by 10%. Find:
a. 1
b. 3
c. 4

2. The inlet section of a vacuum cleaner has a rectangular cross-section, 2.5cm

by 12.5cm. The blower is able to provide suction at 700L/min.
a. What is the average velocity at the inlet, in m/s?
b. If conditions are at sea level standard, determine the mass flow of air, in
kg/s.

3. Incompressible steady flow in the inlet between two parallel plates is uniform,
where = = 8/. Downstream, the flow develops into a parabolic laminar
profile = (0 ), where is a constant. Given 0 = 4, what is the value of
in cm/s? Note that the fluid is SAE 30 oil at 20.

4. The hypodermic needle shown below contains a liquid (SG=1.05). If the serum
is to be injected steadily at 63 /, how fast should the plunder advance?
a. If leakage in the plunger clearance is neglected
b. If leakage is 10% of the needle flow?

5. Air flows steadily through a turbomachine and produces 520kW of power. For
the given inlet and outlet conditions
a. Determine the exit velocity 2
b. Determine the heat transfer Q in kW.
Assume: = 287, = 1003. /(. )

6. Air is flowing through a long, 2cm in diameter insulated tube. At the first section
the pressure is 1.1MPa and temperature is 345K. At section 2, 67m further
downstream, the density is 1.34kg/m3 and the temperature is 298K. At this
section, the Mach number is 0.90. Assume a 1D flow, and air to be a perfect
gas, determine:
a. Mass flow rate
b. Static pressure at section 2 2
c. Velocity at section 2 2

7. The jet engine shown emits air at 20 and 1atm at point (1), where 1 = 0.52
and 1 = 250/. The fuel to air ratio (FAR) is 1:30. The air eventually leaves
the jet engine at point (2) of area 2 = 0.42 at 1atm, with 2 = 900/.
Calculate the reaction force required at the test stand support.

8. Air at and 1atm enters the bottom of a 85 conical flowmeter duct at a mass
flow rate of 0.3kg/s. It supports a centered conical body by steady annular flow
around the cone and exits at the same velocity as it enters. Determine the
weight of the body in Newtons.

9. A jet of alcohol strikes the vertical plate and a force F of 425N is required to
hold the plate stationary. Assuming no losses in the nozzle, determine:
a. Mass flow rate of alcohol
b. Absolute pressure at Section 1.

10. An airplane is flying at 134m.s at 4000m standard altitude. As is typical, the air
velocity relative to the upper surface of the wing, near its maximum thickness
is 26% higher than the planes velocity. Using Bernoullis Equation calculate the
absolute pressure at this particular point of the wing. Elevation changes and
compressibility may be neglected.

11. Water at 20 in the pressurized tank flows out and creates a vertical jet as
shown. Assuming steady frictionless flow, determine the height H as which the
jet rises.

12. A necked-down section in a pipe flow (known as a venturi), develops a low

throat (smallest area) pressure which can aspirate fluid upward from a reservoir
as shown below. Using Bernoullis equation, assume no losses, derive an
expression for the velocity V1 which is just sufficient to bring the reservoir fluid
into the throat.
