Introduction
Barclays is a global bank, it has a history of 300 years and a bank with such an experience of
three centuries, is remarkable on the globe of this world. One can say that its history starts when
the goldsmiths and the merchants were making the foundation of the banking system. It is the
experience of this bank which makes it such prudent that it has opened up its branches in only 56
countries beside the fact that its history is so long and out of these 56 countries, The Pakistan is
one of them. On the other hand the banking organizations which have not such a long history are
opening their branches in so many countries blindly and making losses but Barclays is successful
wherever it goes.

Trade Finance
Export Refinance:
The Export Refinance (ERF) Scheme was introduced by the State bank of Pakistan with an
aim to boost exports of non-traditional items in Pakistan. The scheme is divided in two
parts i.e. Part I (where finance is given, on a case to case and on a pre and post shipment
basis) & Part II (where an exporter may avail the export finance limit based on the
previous years export performance).

Weaknesses
1. Plans to expand in Asia were limited when Barclays were outbid for ABN AMRO in
2006, and alternative expansion plans have had to be adopted.
2. The bank does not plan to pay dividends on its shares until the second half of 2009,
making them less attractive to investors.
3. Product range is short as compare to other banks.
4. Branch networks are very few means single branch in a city like one in Rawalpindi one in
Islamabad etc.
5. Centralized ( the branch manager has no authority to take a decision on his own, he is
bound to discuss any matter with CEO or country head)
Opportunities
1. The banks strategy is to offer a full portfolio of services worldwide, providing a wide
range of cross-selling opportunities.
18 | P a g e
2. Barclays has option of expansion and operations which are being set up in a number of
locations.
3. Welfare provision has decreased in many countries because of the cost to governments,
and Barclays sees self-provision as an increasing trend that it can utilize.
4. The court recently found that Barclays banking charges, which had been challenged
legally, were enforceable, thus repayment is not necessary and charges can continue to be
enforced.
5. As it is a foreign bank , it can attract the foreign industry
6. The bank can open its branches in industrial areas like Sialkot, Faisalabad etc. to capture
the market.
Threats
1. Barclays may be sued by the other investors who are affected by the Barclays wrong
treatment of moving the loss making investment to these investors.
2. While offering a wide range of services provides opportunities, there is also the threat
that customers may prefer to go to suppliers who present a more specialized approach.
3. Barclays acquired a reputation for closing branches because of a high incidence of this in
2000, and competitors have been able to position themselves as more consumer-friendly
through a strategy of keeping branches open.
4. The Asia expansion is seen as risky given that Barclays are in a less strong position than
banking industry leaders regarding capitalization, and this may detract investors.
5. Local competitors have the chance to expand their business which creates negative
impact on Barclays.
19 | P a g e
20 | P a g e
Barclays has to open its branches in different points of city in which nowadays it has only
one branch which is not sufficient for its customers.
Barclays has to introduce decentralization in its branches in order to make the branch
managers feel comfortable to take important immediate decisions.
Barclays need to offer mortgage facilities to the customers in Pakistan.
Conclusion
Coming on to Barclays as an organization it was a pleasure working with their staff because of
the friendly environment. Barclay is a worldwide recognized brand in the banking sector; its
branches are attractive due to high standard of the furniture and fittings. Although it has not
spend a lot of years in Pakistan but due to the vast experience of working on a worldwide level, it
has established and expand its operations very fast only in 6 years in Pakistan. But there are few
areas in which Barclays needs improvement; it is a well reputed organization of Pakistan having
a very good image in the minds of people. The areas where improvement is needed are the
marketing, IT, improved corporate culture.
The aim of my internship was to learn the things which I studied during my BBA from CIIT
Islamabad. After doing this internship, I have learnt many things like patience and working in
real work settings. Along with that I have learnt the corporate culture of the organization which is
going to help me in future and will help me to fit in any organization easily.

Struggle is the key to success. The results are the discretion of Allah. Hence hard working and
devoted workforce is the most precious asset for an organization, same is the case with
Barclays.
