Decision Matrix

Idea Evaluation
With the help of the decision matrix and through
discussions as a group, we decided on the fan propelled
model as our final project design. We concluded that it
meets the criteria needed for an applicable maglev model
and it would be able to fulfil the requirements given to us.
The requirements include run on a 1meter long maglev
track
the ability to carry and transport load
- to move forward to one end, stop, and then
move backwards to return to original position
We also took into account that this idea is not costly and
does not require a huge amount of effort to construct. With

these reasons, we concluded that it would be the most

suitable and viable design for our maglev train model.

Reflection: When this project was first assigned to us, we stated

brainstorming on ideas. I made sure that I got my ideas and concepts
through to my group members and at the same time listen to theirs while
keeping an open mind. For the idea generation stage, members were able
to come up with multiple ideas and we were quickly able to identify which
ideas would be most suitable for the project. I felt that for the most part,
all group members were aware about the maglev train concept. Any
unclear points that members had were brought up for discussion in
meetings, skype group discussions and also tutorial lessons by consulting
our lecturer or tutor. We always made sure to keep each other updated on
the ongoing status of our project, members did a good job of dividing the
work and were cooperative in the process. In the future, I would suggest
that each member be clear on the concept so that we can all have a good
grasp of what is needed for the project. After multiple discussions, we
ended up with three designs out of the many that were suggested in the
beginning. Each member had their own opinions about which design would
be the most suitable. I personally felt that the fan propelled model would
be the best for our model as it is fairly easy to construct and can fulfil all
tasks that were given to us. Therefore, we all took our time with this part
to make sure we all agree on the best design for our model with the help
of the decision matrix. As I was assigned largely to work on comparing the
different models and outline the decision matrix, I made sure to do
research on the various models before presenting these ideas for the
group. We sat together and discussed each aspect of the three models to
eventually come to the conclusion of which would be the best. I made sure
to weigh in on what I thought are the pros and cons of each idea and

design. At the end of the day, we all were able to agree on the fan
propelled model as our final design choice. Overall I am glad that we were
able to conduct many discussions as a group and we made sure to be
productive in each meeting. For the most part, participation of group
members were good although some did miss out on a few meetings and
skype group discussions.
