Activity: Negative Exponents – 2010

In order to complete this activity you will need a graphing calculator Type each of the following
expressions into your calculator and:

• Write the result as a decimal

• Convert the decimal to a fraction (press “Math” then 1 or choose “Frac”)

• Write the problem and result as an equation.

1) Example: 2) (2/3)^(-1) 5) (1/2)^(-2)

(1/2)^(-1)

• Decimal: 2 3) (5)^(-1) 6) (2/3)^(-2)

2
• Fraction:
1
  −1
1 2
• Equation: =
2 1

4) (3/2)^(-1) 7) (3/2)^(-2)

Now do the same thing with some more complicated expressions

1) Example: 2) (1/(2/3))^(-1) 5) (1/(2/3))^(-2)

((2/3)/(4/5))^(-1)

• Decimal: 1.2
3) (1/(3/5))^(-1) 6) (1/(3/5))^(-2)
6
• Fraction:
5
 2  −1
6
• Equation:  3  =
 
4 5
5
4) (2/(3/5))^(-1) 7) (2/(3/5))^(-2)
Review the following exponent rules. Remember: The negative exponent is the reciprocal of the
positive exponent. Also, a power in the numerator can be transfered into the denominator and vice
