ugra vra mah-viu
jvalanta sarvato mukham /
nsiha bhaa bhadra
mtyur mtyu nammy aha //
I bow down to Lord Nsiha who is ferocious and heroic like Lord Viu. He is burning
from every side. He is terrific, auspicious and the death of death personified.
This mantra is quoted or at least referred to in many scriptures. The Nsiha Tapni Upaniad
also gives the history of this mantra. In the last creation the presiding deity was Lord
Nsihadeva and this was the mantra inspiring the entire creation into which Lord Brahm
was initiated, as in the present creation the presiding deity is r Ka and He initiated
Brahm into the Kma-Gyatri.
In Jaganntha Pur the pjris believe that Lord Jaganntha is from the previous creation and
was originally worshipped as Lord Nsihadeva. Jaganntha Pur Dhma floats on the ocean
of devastation and is thus never destroyed. Every twelve or nineteen years the Deities' forms
are changed. The installation yaja for the new Deities takes about two weeks and is mainly
comprised of a Nsiha mantrawhich is chanted 20,000 times.

o vajra-nakya vidmahe

tan no narasiha pracodayt(e)
Let us meditate on He who is known as the possessor of nails as hard as thunderbolts and
sharp teeth. Let us be enthused by Lord Nsihadeva.
The original gyatr mantra, the Kma-gyatr, glorifies the qualities of Lord r Ka, the
Absolute Truth. Each expansion of the original r Ka has unique attributes, which are
glorified in corresponding gyatr mantras, all of which expand from the original
Kma-gyatr. These gyatr mantras are mainly used in Deity worship.

tava kara-kamala-vare nakham adbhuta-ga
dalita-hirayakaipu-tanu-bhgam /
keava dhta-narahari-rpa jaya jagada hare
jaya jagada hare, jaya jagada hare //
O my Lord, Your hands are very beautiful, like the lotus flower, but with Your long nails You
have ripped apart the wasp Hirayakaipu. Unto You, Lord of the universe, do I offer my
humble obeisances. (rla Prabhupda's translation.)

Prayers from the rmad-Bhgavatam


The rmad-Bhgavatam itself contains enough prayers for an entire book therefore we tried
to focus more on verses that describe the form or the activities of the Lord.
caturdaa nrasiha
bibhrad daityendram rjitam /
dadra karajair rv
erak kaa-kd yath //
In the fourteenth incarnation, the Lord appeared as Nsiha and bifurcated the strong body
of the atheist Hirayakaipu with His nails, just as a carpenter pierces cane (1.3.18).
trai-piaporu-bhaya-h sa nsiha-rpa
ktv bhramad-bhrukui-dara-karla-vaktram /
daityendram u gadaybhipatantam rd
rau niptya vidadra nakhai sphurantam //
The Personality of Godhead assumed the incarnation of Nsihadeva in order to vanquish
the great fears of the demigods. He killed the king of the demons, Hirayakaipu, who
challenged the Lord with a club in his hand, by placing the demon on His thighs and piercing
him with His nails, rolling His eyebrows in anger and showing His fearful teeth and mouth
(2.7.14).
o namo bhagavate narasihya
namas tejas-tejase vir-virbhava
vajra-nakha vajra-dara karmsayn /
randhaya randhaya tamo grasa grasa o svh
abhayam abhayam tmani bhyih o krau //

I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Nsihadeva, the source of all power. O my Lord
who possesses nails and teeth just like thunderbolts, kindly vanquish our demoniac desires
for fruitive activity in the material world. Please appear in our hearts and drive away our
ignorance, so that by Your mercy we may become fearless in the struggle for existance in this
material world (5.18.8).
dugev aavy-li-mukhdiu prabhu
pyn nsiho 'sura-ythaprai /
vimucato yasya maha-hsa
dio vinedur nyapata ca grabh //
May Lord Nsihadeva, who appeared as the enemy of Hirayakaipu, protect me in all
directions. His loud laughing vibrated in all directions and caused the pregnant wives of the
asuras to have miscarriages. May that Lord be kind to protect me in difficult places like the
forest and battlefront (6.8.14).
vidiku dikrdhvam adha samantd
antar bahir bhagavn nrasiha /
prahpayal loka-bhaya svanena
sva-tejas grasta-samasta-tej //
Prahlda Mahrja loudly chanted the Holy Name of Lord Nsiha. May Lord Nsihadeva,
roaring for His devotee, Prahlda Mahrja, protect us from all fear of dangers created by
stalwart leaders in all directions through poison, weapons, water, fire, air and so on. May the
Lord cover their influence by His own transcendental influence. May Nsihadeva protect us
from all directions and in all corners, above, below, within and without (6.8.34).
sarambha-duprekya-karla-locano
vyttnanntam vilihan sva-jihvay /
asg-lavkatrua-kearnano
yathntra-ml dvipa-hatyay hari //
The hair on Lord Nsihadeva's face, being sprinkled with drops of blood, was reddish and
looked very beautiful. Lord Nsihadeva pierced Hirayakaipu's abdomen with His nails,
pulled out the demon's intestines and wore them as a garland, which enhanced His beauty.
Thus the Lord became very fearsome, like a lion engaged in fighting an elephant (7.8.30).
nakhkurotpita-ht-saroruha
visjya-tasynucarn udyudhn /
ahan samastn nakha-astra-pibhir
drodaa-yrtho 'nupathn sahasraa //
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who had many, many arms, first uprooted
Hirayakaipu's heart and then threw him aside and turned toward the demon's soldiers.

These soldiers had come in thousands to fight with Him with raised weapons and were very
faithful followers of Hirayakaipu, but Lord Nsihadeva killed all of them merely with the
ends of His nails (7.8.31).
savadht jalad parpatan
grah ca tad-di-vimua-rocia /
ambhodhaya vsa-hat vicukubhur
nirhrda-bht digibh vicukruu //
The hair on Nsihadeva's head shook the clouds and scattered them here and there, His
glaring eyes stole the effulgence of the luminaries in the sky, and His breathing agitated the
seas and oceans. Because of His roaring, all the elephants in the world began to cry in fear
(7.8.32).
dyaus tat-saotkipta-vimna-sakul
protsarpata kam ca padbhipit /
ail samutpetur amuya rahas
tat-tejas kha kakubho na rejire //
The airplanes of the devas were thrown into outer space and the upper planetary system by
the hair on Nsihadeva's head. Because of the pressure of the Lord's lotus feet, the earth
appeared to slip from its position, and all the hills and mountains sprang up due to His
intolerable force. Because of the Lord's bodily effulgence, both the sky and all directions
diminished in their natural illumination (7.8.33).
tata sabhym upaviam uttame
npsane sambhta-tehjasa vibhum /
alakita-dvairatham atyamaraa
pracaa-vaktra na babhja kacana //
Manifesting a full effulgence and a fearsome countenance, Lord Nsiha, being very angry
and finding no contestant to face His power and opulence, then sat down in the assembly hall
on the excellent throne of the king. Because of fear and obedience, no one could come
forward to serve the Lord directly (7.8.34).
eva sva-karma-patita bhava-vaitaraym
anyonya-janma-maraana-bhta-bhtam /
paya jana sva-para-vigraha-vaira-maitra
hanteti pracara pphi mham adya //
My dear Lord, You are always transcendentally situated on the other side of the river of death,
but because of the reactions of our own activities, we are suffering on this side. Indeed, we
have fallen into this river and are repeatedly suffering the pains of birth and death and eating
horrible things. Now kindly look upon us-not only upon me but also upon all others who are
suffering-and by Your causeless mercy and compassion, deliver us and maintain us (7.9.41).

ko nv atra te 'khila-guro bhagavan praysa


uttrae 'sya bhava-sambhava-lopa-heto /
mdheu vai mahad-anugraha rta-bandho
ki tena te priya-jann anusevat na //
O my Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, original spiritual master of the entire world,
what is the difficulty for You, who manage the affairs of the universe, in delivering the fallen
souls engaged in Your devotional service? You are the friend of all suffering humanity, and
for great personalities it is necessary to show mercy to the foolish. Therefore I think that You
will show Your causeless mercy to persons like us, who engage in Your service (7.9.42).
o namo bhagavate tubhya
puruya mahtmane /
haraye 'dbhuta-sihya
brahmae paramtmae //
O my Lord, full of six opulences, O Supreme Person! O Supreme Soul, killer of all miseries!
O Supreme Person in the form of a lion and man, let me offer my respectful obeisances unto
You! (7.10.10).

etad ya di-puruasya mgendra-ll
daityendra-ytha-pa-vadha prayata paheta /
daitytmajasya ca sat pravarasya puya
rutvnubhvam akuto-bhayam eti lokam //
Prahlda Mahrja was the best among exalted devotees. Anyone who with great attention
hears this narration concerning the activities of Prahlda Mahrja, the killing of
Hirayakaipu, and the activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Nsihadeva,
surely reaches the spiritual world, where there is no anxiety (7.10.47.).
namas te 'dbhuta-sihya
sdhu-loka-bhaypaha /
Obeisances to You, the amazing lion [Lord Nsiha], who remove Your saintly devotees' fear
(10.40.19).

Ugra-Nsiha dhyna
In the practical aspects of deity worship there is a section called yoga or purificatory
procedures, performed just before the worship of the deities. Dhyna, meditation on the form
of the Lord for the purification of the mind, is a part of yoga. These prayers of the rmad
Bhgavatam are the dhyna mantras in the worship of Ugra Nsiha.

sphurat sa-keara-jmbhitnanam /

Hirayakaipu studied the form of the Lord, trying to decide who the form of Nsihadeva
standing before him was. The Lord's form was extremely fearsome because of His angry eyes,
which resembled molten gold; His shining mane, which expanded the dimensions of His
fearful face; His deadly teeth; and His razor-sharp tongue, which moved about like a dueling
sword. His ears were erect and motionless, and His nostrils and gaping mouth appeared like
caves of a mountain. His jaws parted fearfully, and His entire body touched the sky. His neck
was very short and thick, His chest broad, His waist thin, and the hairs on His body as white
as the rays of the moon. His arms, which resembled flanks of soldiers, spread in all directions
as He killed the demons, rogues and atheists with His conchshell, disc, club, lotus and other
natural weapons (7.8.19-22).

The Manyu Skta of the g Veda


Manyu, the personification and presiding Deity of anger, is a form of Nsihadeva. This
kta is chanted during fire sacrifices for the destruction of enemies.

hari o
yaste manyo 'vidhadujra jyaka jaha oja puyati vivamnupak /
shyma dsamryam tvay yuj sahasktena sahas sahasvat //
O Manyu, the persons who worship You, who is like a thunderbolt, the destroyer of enemies,
enjoys all power and strength combined, may we overcome our enemies with You as our
friend, invigorating and strong.

manyurindro manyurevsa devo manyurhot varuo jtaved /
manyu via iate manury phi no manyo tapas sajo //
Manyu is Indra, He is Varuna and Agni. Those of human descent praise Manyu. Protect us
Manyu, be pleased with our austerities.

abhhi manyo tapasastavyn tapas yuj vi jahi atrn /
amitrah vtrah dasyuh ca viv vasnya bhar tva na //
Come to us Manyu, you who are the strongest of the strong. With austerity as your
companion, overthrow our enemies. Give us spiritual wealth, O slayer of enemies, adversaries
and foes.

tva hi manyo abhi bhtyoj svayam bhurbhmau abhimtiha /
viva carai sahuri sahv-nasmasvoja ptansu dhehi //
Give us strength in battle, Manyu, O you who posses overpowering strength. You are
self-existent, furious, the overthrower of enemies, the beholder of all, enduring, and vigorous.
TEXT 5
abhga sannapa pareto asmi tava kratv taviasya praceta /
ta tv manyo akraturjih-ha sv tanur-baladeyya mehi //
O Lord Manyu, not taking part in Your worship (not offering oblations at the sacrifice) I was
forced to retreat before my enemies. I avoided and neglected Your worship. Yet please be kind
and give me strength.
TEXT 6
aya te asmyupa mehyarv pratcna sahure vivadhya /
manyo vajrin-nabhi mm vavtsva hanva dasyug ruta bodhype //
I am Yours! Come to me, turn Your face towards me! O resister of the foes, sustainer of all,
Manyu, the holder of a thunderbolt, come to me. Let us slay the demons, and help Your
devotees.

abhi prehi dakinato bhav me 'dh vtri jaghanva mri /
juhomi te dharua madhvo agra mubh upau pratham pibva //
Approach me by my right side and let us slay a multitude of foes. I offer You the best part of
the Soma juice, let us drink it together in privacy.

tvay manyo sarahamrujanto haramaso dhit marutva /
tigmeava yudh sain abhi prayantu naro agnirp //
May the priests, who resemble Agni, ascend the same chariot as You, O Manyu, who is
accompanied by the Maruts. May You proceed in battle, advancing, exulting, indignant,
armed with sharp arrows, whetting Your weapons.
TEXT 2
agniriva manyo tviita sahasva sennrna sahure hta edhi /
hatvya atrn vi bhajasva veda aujo mimno vi mdho nudasva //
Blazing like fire, O Manyu, overcome our foes, come as our general, when invoked by us in
battle. Having slain the enemies, divide their wealth. Granting us strength, scatter our foes.
TEXT 3
sahasva manyo abhimtimasme rujan man praman prehi atrn /
ugra te pjo nanv rurudhre vai vaa nayasa ekaja tvam //
O Manyu, overthrow our enemies. Advance against our foes, wounding, killing, annihilating
them. O You who depend on no-one, who can resist Your fierce might?
TEXT 4
eko bahunmasi manyavito viaviam yudhaye sa idhi /
akttaruk tvay yuj vaya dyumanta ghoa vijayya kmahe //
You are praised, O Manyu, as the conqueror of all. Help us contend with all men. With You
as our friend, O radiant one, we cry out in victory.
TEXT 5
vijeakdindra ivnavabravo 'smka manyo adhip bhaveha /
priya te nma sahure gmasi vidm tamutsa yata babhtha //
O Manyu, giver of victory, You are irreproachable like Lord Indra. Please protect this
sacrifice. O Enduring One, we sing to you appropriate praises. We know this to be the source
where You have come from.

bhty sahaj vajra syaka saho bibharya-bhibhta uttaram /
kratv no manyo saha medhyedi mah-dhanarya puruhta sasji //
O Manyu, You are like a destructive thunderbolt, the overpowerer of foes, the twin brother of
victory and have extreme strength. Be favourable to us, Manyu, in our deeds, O You who are

invoked by many in the shock of battle.

sasa dhanam ubhaya samkta
masmabhaya datt varuaca manyu /
bhiya dadhn hdayeu atrava
parjitso apa ni layantm //
May Manyu and Varuna bestow upon us undivided spiritual and material wealth; may our
enemies, fear within their hearts, be overcome and utterly destroyed.

Prayers from the Nsiha Prna


r Nsiha Prama
These prayers were offered by r Caitanya Mahprabhu to Lord Nsihadeva in the
Jaganntha temple. Once entering the temple compound through the Siha-Dvra there are
22 steps one has to climb. On the southern side of the steps there is a Nsiha temple,
Mahaprabhu would take daran first there, while paying obeisances He would recite these
verses. After that he would go on for Jaganntha's daran.
namas te nara-sihya
prahldhlda-dyine /
hirayakaipor vaka
il-aka-nakhlaye //
I offer my respectful obeisances unto You, Lord Nsihadeva. You are the giver of pleasure to
Mahrja Prahlda, and Your nails cut the chest of Hirayakaipu like a chisel cutting stone.
ito nsiha parato nsiho
yato yato ymi tato nsiha /
bahir nsiho hdaye nsiho
nsiham di araa prapadye //
Lord Nsihadeva is here, and He is also there on the opposite side. Wherever I go, there I
see Lord Nsihadeva. He is outside and within My heart. Therefore I take shelter of Lord
Nsihadeva, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead.

vajrdhika-nakha-spara
divya-siha namostu te //

O Divine Lion, Your fiery eyes radiate inside Your mane appearing like Molten gold, and the
tips of Your nails are stronger than a thunderbolt. Obeisances to You. (N.P 1.2)

kotrsk-kardamru //
May the tips of Your nails, which are like a plough, protect You. The nails which are red
with the muddy blood in the course of tilling the land of the chest of Hirayakaipu (N.P.
1.3).

a-mocana Nsiha Stotra


In the g Veda Sahit it is stated that when one is born he has three kinds of obligations. To
the sages, to the demigods and to the forfathers. The obligations are performing austerities,
performing yajas and begetting children respectively. This stotram of the Nsiha Pra is
a prayer for the release of all kinds material and worldly obligations.

devat-krya-siddhyarta
sabh-sambha-samudbhavam /
r nsiha mah-vra
nammi a-muktaye //
Lord Nsiha is to be worshipped if perfection is desired. Unto the all-powerful r Nsiha,
who appeared from the pillar of the assembly hall, I offer my obeisances so that I may become
released from mundane obligations.
TEXT 2
lakmylingita vmnga
bhaktn vara-dyakam /
r nsiha mah-vra
nammi a-muktaye //
Embraced on His left side by Lakmdev, Lord Nsiha gives benedictions to His devotees.
My obeisances to the all-powerful Lord Nsiha, so that I may be released from all other
obligations.

Wearing a garland of intestines, He carries the conch, disc, lotus, club and another weapons.
Unto Lord Nsiha, the all-powerful, I offer my obeisances to become free from worldly
debts.

kadrja-via-nanam /

nammi a-muktaye //
By remembrance of Lord Nsiha all sins are destroyed and the poisonous effect of the
descendants of Kadr (serpents) are nullified. My obeisances unto Him the all-powerful, so
that I may become free from all other debts.

siha-ndena mahat
dig-danti bhaya-nanam /
r nsiha mah-vra
nammi a-muktaye //
By His greatly ferocious roar and His fearful teeth, which encompass all ten directions, He
destroys all fear. Unto the all-powerful Lord Nsiha my obeisances, so that I may become
free from worldly obligations.

daityevara-vidraam /

nammi a-muktaye //
Lord Nsiha is the Lord of Lakm and the giver of benedictions to Prahlda Mahrja, yet
He ripped apart the king of the demons, Hirayakaipu. May I become free from debts by
offering obeisances unto the all-powerful Lord Nsiha.

bhaktnn abhaya-pradam /

When His devotees are oppressed by inauspicious planets, Lord Nsiha gives them
fearlessness. I offer my obeisances unto the all-powerful Lord Nsiha so that I may be
released from worldly obligations.

Lord Nsiha is the master of the Vedas, Vednta and the process of sacrifice. He is offered
prayers by Lord Brahm, Lord iva and the other demigods. I offer my obeisances unto the
all-powerful Lord Nsiha so that I may be freed from all other debts.

a-mocana-sajitam /
an jyate sadyo
dhana ghram avpnuyt //
Whoever reads this regularly, consciously desiring freedom from debts, immediately becomes
freed from all obligations and very soon attains opulence.

The Nsiha-Kavaca of the Brahma Pra

nsiha-kavaca vakye
prahldenodita pur /
sarva-raka-kara punya
sarvopadrava-nanam //
I shall now recite the Nsiha-kavaca, formerly spoken by Prahlda Mahrja. It is most
pious, vanquishes all kinds of impediments, and provides one all protection.

sarva-sapat-kara caiva
svarga-moka-pradyakam /
dhytv nsiha devea
hema-sihsana sthitam //
It bestows all opulence, and can give one elevation to the heavenly planets or liberation. One
should meditate upon Lord Nsiha, Lord of the demigods, seated upon a golden throne.

vivtsya tri-nayana
arad-indu-sama-prabham /

lakmyligita-vmga
vibhtibh rpritam //
His mouth is wide open, He has three eyes and He is as radiant as the autumn moon. He is
embraced by Lakm dev on His left side, and His form is the shelter of all opulences, both
material and spiritual.

catur-bhuja komalga
svara-kuala-obhitam /
saroja-obhitoraska
ratna-keyra-mudritam //
The Lord has four arms, and His limbs are very soft. He is decorated with golden earrings. His
chest is resplendent like the lotus flower, and His arms are decorated with jewel studded
ornaments.

tapta-kcana-saka
pta-nirmala-vsasam /
indrdi-sura-mauliha
sphuran mikya-dptibhi //
He is dressed in a spotless yellow garment, which exactly resembles molten gold. He is the
original cause of existence, beyond mundane sphere, for the great demigods headed by Indra.
He appears bedecked with rubies which are blazingly effulgent.

virjita-pada-dvandva
akha-cakrdi-hetibhi /
garutmat ca vinayt
styamna mudnvitam //
His two feet are very attractive and He is armed with various weapons such as the conch,
disc, etc. Garua joyfully offers prayers with great reverence.

sva-ht-kamalasavsa
ktv tu kavaca pathet /
nsimo me ira ptu
loka-rakrtha-sambhava //
Having seated Lord Nsihadeva upon the lotus of one's heart, one should recite the
following mantra: " May Lord Nsiha, who protects all the planetary systems, protect my
head."

phala me rakatu dhvanim /
nsiho me dau ptu
soma-srygi-locana //
Although the Lord is all-pervading, He hid Himself within a pillar. May He protect my speech
and the results of my activities. May Lord Nsiha, whose eyes are the moon, the sun, and
fire, protect my eyes.
TEXT 9
smtam me ptu nhari
muni-varya-stuti-priya /
nsa me siha-nsas tu
mukha lakm-mukha-priya //
May Lord Nhari, who is pleased by the prayers offered by the best of sages, protect my
memory. May He who has the nose of a lion protect my nose, and may He whose face is very
dear to the goddess of fortune protect my mouth.

One who regularly chants this prayer, whether once or thrice (daily), he becomes victorious

This kavaca-mantra is the king of all mantras. One attains by it what would be attained by

Having marked one's body with tilak, taking camana with water and reciting this mantra
three times, the fear of all inauspicious planers is removed.

That person who recites this mantra, meditating upon Lord Nsihadeva, has all of his
diseases vanquished, including those of the abdomen.

krandanta roayanta dii dii satanta saharanta bharanta

Lord Nsiha roars loudly and causes others to roar. With His multitudes of arms He tears
the demons asunder and kills them in this way. He is always seeking out and tormenting the
demonic descendants of Dit, both on this earth planet and in the higher planets, and He
throws them down and scatters them. He cries with great anger as He destroys the demons in
all directions, yet with His unlimited hands He sustains, protects, and nourishes the cosmic
manifestation. I offer my respectful obeisances to the Lord, who has assumed the form of a

This Nsiha-Kavaca is part of the Trailokya Vijaya chapter of the Brahma-Sahit (not the
Brahma Sahita that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu found). These mantras were given by rla
Bhaktisiddhnta Sarasvat Thkura for the protection of those sannysa disciples who were
sent to the the west for preaching.

ri Nrada Muni said: My dear father, lord and master of the universe. You are the lord of the
demigods headed by Indra. Kindly tell me the Kavaca mantra of Lord Nsiha the great
incarnation of Viu. By reading this Kavaca aloud a learned person becomes victorious
through the three worlds.

It is by reciting and meditating upon this that Lakmi can maintain the three worlds, and
Lord iva (Mahevara) can destroy them. Similarly are the demigods the controller of the
different directions.

I shall speak this essence of Vedic mantras, which wards off all kinds of ghosts and
hobgoblins. By it's grace the sage Durvs became victorious throughout the three worlds
demanding respect and most fearful in His anger.

i chanda ca gyatr

For this Kavaca, which is directly perceived as giving victory over the three worlds, I
(Brahma) am the i, Gyatr is the meter, and the all-powerful Nsiha is the Deity.

One should place Lord Nsima's mantra-bja, "krau" on One's head, thinking : May my
head be protected by the moon colored One, who is the greatest among the humans. My
obeisances unto the ferocious and powerful, the great Viu, the fiery One, whose faces are
on all sides, the fearful one, Nsima, who causes the death of even death personified, or the
One who overcomes even death. One should place this mantra, composed of thirty-two
syllables upon his head. It is the king of all mantras. It is like a wish-fulfilling tree for the
demigods and devotees.

bhagavato ckua mama /
narasihya ca jvlmline ptu mastakam //
One should also place "krau" firmly upon his neck for protection.Placing the word
"bhagavate" upon his heart, "Narasihya" upon his two eyes, and "jvl-mline" on the top
of his head, one meditates upon the different parts of this Nsiha-mantra protecting the
different parts of his body.

dpta-darya ca tatha
agni-netrya ca nsikm /
sarva-rako-ghnya sarva
bhta-vinanya ca //
One should place on his nose the syllables "dpta-darya agni-netrya sarva-rako-ghnya
sarva bhta-vinanya". Which means: Obeisances unto Him, whose teeth are blazing, and
who destroys all ghosts and rkasas.

daha daha paca-dvayam /
raka raka sarva-mantra

Meditating on the protection of one's face, one should place there the syllables:
"sarva-jvara-vinya daha daha paca-dvayam raka raka / krau / ugram vra

nammy aham / krau bhagavate narasihya ca jvl-mline dpta-darya agni-netrya

fevers, obeisanses. Burn, burn, cook, cook, protect, protect. My obeisances unto the ferocious
and powerful, the great Viu, the fiery One, whose faces are on all sides, the fearful One,
Nsia,who causes the death of even death personified, or the one who overcomes even

death. Unto the Personality of Godhead Narasiha, garlanded with blazing energy, whose
teeth are glowing and whose eyes are fiery, who kills all rkasas and demons and annihilates
the ghosts, my obeisanses.

Meditating on the protection of one's rectum, one should first sip water for purification and
chant "o rmcandrya nama". Sipping water again one should place the bja-mantra
"kl" on both of his hands together. Thereafter one should place "o nama" on his feet
and "nryaya" on his side, as well as the bja-mantras " hr krau krau hu
phat".

vsudevya ca pha
kl kya uru-dvayam //
Praying for the protection of one's waist, one should place there the varakara, "o". One
should place the syllables "o namo bhagavate" upon his feet, "vsudevya" on his back, and
"kl kya" upon his thighs.

jnun ca manttama /
kl glau kl ymalgya
nama pyt pada-dvayam //
Upon his knees, one should place the mantra "kl kya", thinking that the Lord may
always protect me in His form as the best among the humans. Then one should sip water for
purification and place the mantra "kl glau kl ymalgya nama" upon his feet.

One should meditate upon the constant protection of the body, placing the mantra "krau
narasihya krau" upon all his limbs.

Lord Brahm continued: My dear boy, thus I have told You the embodiment of the potencies

Having performed worship of the spiritual master, one may accept this Kavaca. Having

Performing the ritualistic ceremonies of purification (puracarya), one hundred and eight
times is equal to one-tenth the benefit received by the best of devotees who chant this Kavaca

Lakm, the goddess of fortune, and Sarasvat, the goddess of speech and learning, reside in

intoxication of competing with others for supremacy.

If one writes this down on a leaf or bark and keeps it within a golden capsule on his neck or
right arm, Lord Nsihadeva will be personally present.

A woman may keep it on her left arm, a man on the right hand. Certainly this most
auspicious Kavaca brings all perfection to the bearer.

janma-vandhy naa-putr
bahu-putravat bhavet //
A woman who is totally barren, or who bears only one child, or whose sons are lost or dead
may become possessed of many sons.

trailokyam kobhayasyeva
trailokya vijyi bhavet //
By the grace of this Kavaca, a man becomes jvan-mukta, liberated even in this life time. He is
able to move the whole universe, and certainly becomes victorious throughout the three
worlds.

Certainly bhtas, pretas, picas, rkasas and dnavas all immediately flee from the country
and go to another upon seeing it.

In that home or even in the same village where this Kavaca exists, all such demoniac
creatures, once having understood it's presence, give up that place and go far, far away.

Prayers offered by r Caitanya Mahprabhu


ri Caitanya Mahpabhu would regularly visit the Nsiha temple next to the Gundica
mandir and would always take daran of Nsihadeva before seeing Lord Jagannatha. Also in
Madhya-lila when the Lord's south indian tour is described is mentioned how upon visiting
different temples of Nsihadeva such as Jyaa-Nsiha at Sihcala, Ahobalam-Nsiha at
Rkitya and Pnkal-Nsiha at Magalagiri, r Gauranga Mahprabhu would dance and
offer prayers in ecstasy.

prahldea jaya padm-mukha-padma-bhga //
All glories to Nsihadeva! All glories to Nsihadeva, who is the Lord of Prahlda
Mahrja and, like a honeybee, is always engaged in beholding the lotuslike face of the
goddess of fortune.

These prayers are quoted from the 47th chapter of the Harivasa Pra narrating the story
of Lord Rmacandra visiting the Deity of Ahobalam Nsiha.

Praying this way the best of the Raghus, Lord Rmacandra worshipped Lord Hari. At that

Prayers by rdhara Swm


rla rdhra Swm was a very advanced vaiava coming in the line of Viu Swm's
sampradya. His commentaries on rmad-Bhgavatam and other scriptures were not only
accepted but very much appreciated too by r Caitanya Mahprabhu. The principle Deity of
his sampradya is Nsihadeva therefore rdhra Swm composed many prayers in
glorification of the Lord.
In his commentary on the First Canto of rmad-Bhgavatam (1.1.1), rdhra Swm
describes Lord Nsihadeva in this way:
prahlda-hdayhlda
bhaktvidy-vidraam /
arad-indu-ruci vande
prndra-vadana harim //
Let me offer my obeisances unto Lord Nsihadeva, who is always enlightening Prahlda
Mahrja within his heart and who always kills the nescience that attacks the devotees. His
mercy is distributed like moonshine, and His face is like that of a lion. Let me offer my
obeisances unto Him again and again.
This verse was composed by rdhra Swm in his commentary on rmad-Bhgavatam
(7.9.1).
ugro 'py anugra evya
sva-bhaktn n-kear /
kearva sva-potnm
anye ugra-vikrama //
Although very ferocious, the lioness is very kind to her cubs. Similarly, although very
ferocious to non devotees like Hirayakaipu, Lord Nsihadeva is very, very soft and kind
to devotees like Prahlda Mahrja.
The following verse was composed by rdhra Swm in his commentary on
rmad-Bhgavatam (10.87.1):
vg- yasya vadane
lakmr yasya ca vakasi /
yasyste hdaye samvit
ta nsiham aha bhaje //
Lord Nsihadeva is always assisted by Sarasvat, the goddess of learning, and He is always
embracing to His chest the goddess of fortune. The Lord is always complete in knowledge
within Himself. Let us offer obeisances unto Nsihadeva.

In my heart I take shelter of Him who is glorified as the inner controller of all the worlds, and

r Lakm-Nsihakarua-rasa-stotra
This stotra was written by rpda di akarcrya praying for the mercy of r
Lakm-Nsiha Deva. This stotra is very similar in its prayerful mood to the other
devotional writtings of di akarcrya such as Govindakam and Prabhodaudhakra
about Lord Ka which reflect nothing of his impersonal teachings. akarcrya was an
incarnation of Lord iva but with the purpose of teaching the myvda philosophy therefore
the vaiava understanding is that the preaching of impersonalism was done by Mahim a
demoniac manifestation of Lord iva. Such wonderful prayers are composed by the Sadiva
form of ambhu.

in a forest fire. Being very fearful, his body burnt by the licking flames, he cries most pitiably.
Just as one tormented by a forest fire may take shelter in a pond. Your lotus feet are just like a
pond giving refuge to the surrendered soul from the forest fire of sasra. O

aquatic animal, I eagerly accept the hook baited with the sense objects. And just as the fish is
caught trembling, and his head is cut off, so my real consciousness is lost as I am punished by
