Taking a closer look at local farming history

Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno visits one of Moorestowns oldest farms to highlight importance of agriculture
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Agriculture is New Jersey's
third-largest industry, according
to the state Department of Agriculture. In New Jersey, there are
9,071 farms, 715,057 acres of farmland and 213,557 acres of preserved farmland. Farmland,
forests and open space make up
about 50 percent of the states
land.
New Jersey is known as the
Garden State for a reason.
However, some people forget
that, according to Lt. Gov. Kim
Guadagno. That is why she, along
with state Secretary of Agriculture
Douglas
Fisher
and
Moorestown Mayor Victoria
Napolitano, visited the BrowningHess Farm, one of the oldest
farms in Moorestown, on Monday
Sept. 28 to highlight the states
farming industry.
Were here to visit the agricultural business and show what an
important part agricultural businesses are to the economy, not
just in Burlington County, but the
state of New Jersey. Agriculture
is the third-largest industry in
New Jersey, and people forget
that, Guadagno said.
So any way we can highlight
that the Garden State truly is the
Garden State we should jump at

Moorestown Mayor Victoria Napolitano, left, Lt. Gov. and Secretary of State Kim Guadagno and Debbie

mayor and lieutenant governor visited the farm to get more acknowledgment for agriculture, the states

the opportunity.
Moorestown has always had a
history in farming. Since the

early 1700s, farming was a major

industry in the area. Today, while
farming isnt a major industry in

Moorestown, there are still farms

and farmland.
We have a long farming histo-

ry (in Moorestown) and still a lot

of acreage that is farmed here. It
is kind of right for it to be preserved, Napolitano said.
However, keeping farmland
and open space in New Jersey
hasnt been easy. From 1982 to
2007, New Jersey lost approximately 27 percent of its agricultural land to development, according to NJFuture.org. This
trend has slowed, cutting in half
the rate of loss, from more than 6
percent between 1997 and 2002 to
less than 3 percent between 2002
and 2007.
The state has taken measures
to stop over development. In 2014,
legislation was passed on Open
Space preservation, which was
designed to dedicate 6 percent of
corporate business tax revenues
to open space, farmland and historic preservation.
Moorestown has worked hard
to keep open space and farmland,
according to Napolitano.
Its an important thing to do,
to preserve farmland and open
space. Its something our Township Council has worked really
hard to do here in Moorestown,
before my time and even more
now, she said. When we preserve open space, we are preserving the history of our town, too.

Tourism in New Jersey isnt just about the Shore

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

hen you think about

tourism in New Jersey, the
first thing that pops into
your mind, most likely, is the Shore.
And why shouldnt it be? There is so
much focus on our coastline, and so
much of our lives here revolve around
the summertime rush to the beach.
But there is so much more our state
has to offer, and these other offerings
are on display front and center during
October.
Farms in New Jersey are popular
places for what has come to be known
as agritourism a booming industry
that involves any agriculturally-based
operation or activity that brings visitors to a farm. New Jersey is the Garden State for a reason, and there are
multiple farms in many places
throughout our state, both in more

rural places and in not-so-rural places

as well.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno toured some
local farms last week to help promote
the agritourism industry, which is
growing each year. According to the
state Department of Agriculture, New
Jersey ranks ninth in the nation in
agritourism, bringing in more than
$18 million per year.
As farms look for new ways to grow
revenue, they not only look for secondary crops but also toward runoff revenue streams from traditional
tourism areas such as apple and

pumpkin picking to hayrides, corn

mazes and farm tours.
October in New Jersey is one of the
best months to visit a farm. Apples are
ready to be plucked off the trees and
eaten raw or baked into delectable
pies. Pumpkins and gourds are ready
to be picked from the ground and used
as decorations for Halloween-inspired
themes inside and outside houses.
And farm stands are vibrant with fall
wreaths, hay, scarecrows and apple
cider.
Farming is such an important sector to our states economy and our
states image. So put on a pair of jeans,
grab a hoodie and head out to a local
farm this month. If you havent experienced agritourism in New Jersey
yet, October is the best month to do it.
Enjoy the season!

Bringing together food, wine and charity

Moorestown Visiting Nurses & Hospice hosts Benefit Food & Wine Tasting Oct. 10
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Wines from across the globe and food
from around the area will be coming together in one place on Oct. 10, all for a good
and local cause.
Moorestown Visiting Nurses & Hospice
invites the community to attend its 7th Annual Benefit Food & Wine Tasting at The
Enterprise Center at Rowan College at
Burlington County, 3331 Route 38 in Mt.
Laurel. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $70 in advance and $75 at the door,
all going to help the non-profit VNA.
Its just a wonderful event while also
supporting the community. It is an opportunity to support a highly-involved com-

munity agency who cares for people of all

ages, said Kim Plasket, director of public
communications for Moorestown VNA.
Established in 1904, Moorestown VNA is
a non-profit home care, hospice, counseling and community health organization
serving Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties. Its mission is to provide
home- and community-based health-care
services that promote optimum quality of
life, independence and dignity.
As there was a need in the community,
the Moorestown VNA decided to have the
Benefit Food & Wine Tasting to raise
money for the organization and services.
Due to its success, it is held every year,
growing in size with attendees and vendors. Anticipated attendance is more than
450.

Its a very lively atmosphere. We usually draw a crowd without feeling overcrowded. Its very festive. It will feel like three
hours isnt enough, Plasket said.
The evening will host generous tastings
of U.S. and international wines and beer,
sponsored by Benash Liquors of Cherry
Hill. New this year is rum and spirits tasting.

Recreation Department
receives state award
By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
The New Jersey Commission
on Recreation for Individuals
with Disabilities bestowed the
New
Jersey
Distinguished
Agency Recreation Services
Award upon the Moorestown Department of Parks and Recreation on Wednesday, Sept. 30 for
its outstanding recreation programs and services that demonstrate a commitment to the integration of people with and without disabilities. Programs offered
by Moorestowns Department of
Parks and Recreation serve as an
exemplary model for replication
by other agencies and organizations. Moorestown was the only
municipality to receive the
award. Director Theresa Miller
accepted the award on behalf of
the department and its staff.
The breadth of programming
available to individuals with disabilities has grown through the
many partnerships and collabo-

rative relationships the department has developed since 2008.

With the help of a grant from the
New Jersey Department of Community Affairs-Office of Recreation, the department began its
outreach by creating a comprehensive four-week summer program for children with disabilities. The Special Needs Summer
Camp continues today and is held
daily for four weeks and works
closely with the Moorestown
Township Public Schools Extended School Year program. This
camp has grown annually, and in
2015 expanded to include two
groups of participants ages 5 to
12 and 13 to 18. This expansion
was made possible by a donation
from Sean Fischel Connect, and
additional financial contributions from the Moorestown Education Foundation and Bayada
Health Service.
In addition to the daily camp
experience, the department hosts

The lawn of the Moorestown

Great music from the 1950s and
1960s will be filling the air on one
end of Main Street while a jazz
trio entertains in the middle and
a rockin DJ spins records on the
other end. There will be a stilt
walker, face painting, balloon
sculptures and a puppeteer for a
day full of entertainment for all
ages.

many special events and activities throughout the year to serve

individuals with special needs.
Since 2007, the Annual Holiday
Party for children with disabilities has attracted families
throughout Burlington County.
More than 100 individuals have
attended this event, which hosted
a DJ, dancing, games and food.
Holiday gift cards were provided
to all of the special needs individuals courtesy of the Elderberry
Foundation.
The Moorestown Department
of Parks and Recreation has diligently worked with local sports
coaches and programs to help
provide a wide variety of athletic
programs that encourage those
with disabilities to be active.
From Family Support Outings to
the TOPS Soccer Program in
partnership with Maple Shade
Township, there are many opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in fun, de-

velopmentally appropriate and

competitive athletic programs.
Additionally, through the generosity of local sponsors, programs such as the Special Needs
Music Therapy and Social Group
are made possible. The SMASH
program (Social Meeting After
School Hours) was introduced in
the spring of 2015 through a donation by the Monica Buckley Foundation. In partnership with the
Moorestown High School, special
needs teens were bused to the
Church Street Recreation center
on Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 4:30
p.m. The department has provided a karate instructor and a
music therapist as well as a special education teacher, occupational therapist and two aides and
continues this year.
A wide variety of special
events are planned each year
specifically for individuals with
special needs throughout the
Burlington and Camden County
areas. From the Teen Karaoke

Schwering Hardware
Schwerings Hardware first
opened its doors for business
on Sept. 25, 1922. H.C. Schwering built and opened a generalgoods store called Schwerings
Wayside Hardware. Grandpop
sold products as varied as toys
and radio tubes to electric
clothes washing machines, a
brand-new item for that era!
Our famous horse and buggy
(where our logo comes from)
first showed up in the 1960s.
Over the years, some of our
products have changed, but not
our dedication to customers.
We started selling gas logs and
fireplaces more than 15 years
ago. Today we have pellet

stoves, wood stoves and inserts, electric linear fireplaces

and glass fireplace doors. We
are also a full line old fashion
hardware store that repairs
lamps, screens and windows,
cuts glass and keys and more!
While you wont find the chickens, goats, and beehives that
once lived out back, you will
find quality products in a convenient, friendly atmosphere,
fair price and unparalleled
service. We are still a familyowned business committed to
helping our customers with
their hearth and hardware
needs. Stop in soon, youll be
glad you did.

donated by many top area restaurants, chefs and bakeries.

It is really a hats off to the

restaurants and businesses that
participate. It is a great way to
sample what the restaurants have
to offer. They really bring out
their finest. If you enjoy food, this
is the place to be, Plasket said.
The evening will also host a
silent auction, wine pull and cash

raffle. The silent auction will include about 14 packages that include things such as restaurant
gift cards, spa packages, autographed sports memorabilia and
golf outings. For the wine pull,
when you buy a ticket you get a
number for a wine bottle; some
wine bottles have a sticker on the

LONG & FOSTER

bottom for additional prizes.

The Pine Barons Mens Chorus, an acacpella group, will be
walking around and stopping to
sing and entertain guests.
The recommended dress is
business casual or causal cocktail.
Come out and enjoy. Meet peo-

ple in the community and support a worthwhile cause. Support

families in our own communities
and those in need, Plasket said.

QUAKERS
Continued from page 4

but was unable to win a team

championship in the Moorestown
Classic or Burlington County
Open.
With most of the team returning, Dickerson encouraged his
players to put in extra work in regard to conditioning and skill
building in the offseason.
All of the girls took to heart
some of the things I said last
year, Dickerson said. They lifted weights and did some speed
and agility training in the offseason.
The extra work appeared to pay
dividends in preseason. Dickerson had the team play challenge
matches prior to the regular season where each of the players
faces off to see what positions she
will play in the year. As he
watched the matches, Dickerson
realized this years team would be
very competitive.
In challenge matches, everyone had close matches and a lot of
them went into three sets, he
said.
Dickerson feels his three singles players could be one of the
deepest trios in the state. No. 2
singles player Alex Boone and No.
3 singles players Anna Mary
Shetler have dominated their
competition, losing just one regular season match each this season. They have been huge supports for No. 1 singles player
Emily ONeil, who has lost just
two regular season matches despite facing each opponents top
player.
Dickerson is very impressed

with Shetlers improvement in

2015. Shetler won the No. 3 singles
individual title at the Burlington
County Open for a second
straight year.
She took to heart the offseason workouts and became a beast
early on, Dickerson said. She's
probably the best No. 3 singles
player in the area.
Boone had played No. 1 singles
in 2014, but swapped spots with
ONeil after Dickerson said moving down to No. 2 singles did not
have a negative effect on Boone.
No matter where they are in
the lineup, they're going to help
the team, Dickerson said. They
know everyone is going to work
hard.
Moorestown hasnt had issues
beating South Jersey schools, but
playing North Jersey schools, especially in the postseason, has
been a challenge in the past. In
the Group III semifinals last year,
Moorestown was swept out of the
playoffs with a 5-0 loss to Millburn.
To counter this, the Quakers
have faced some competition
from outside the region. They
opened the season against
Lawrenceville High School and
played Westfield High School in
the Moorestown Classic this year.
I want to make sure our team
plays a good amount of competition throughout the season,
Dickerson said. I always try to
insert competitive matches.
Dickerson believes the Quakers depth and experience against
North Jersey schools may be the
missing puzzle piece to the teams
first state final appearance since
2007.
We're strong and at the same
time we can still improve quite a
bit, he said.

MANY
Continued from page 1

This farm family is on its seventh

generation; you dont get that
much anymore. Anything that we
can do to help preserve that
and keep that going well initiate
it.
The Browning-Hess Farm has
been around for more than 100
years and is the oldest and
longest running family farm in
Moorestown. It started in 1898 at
its Lenola Road farm with 77
acres. There have been seven generations of descendants running
the farm. They started their market operations in 1959 and have
continued to be successful.
Moorestown is a great place to
have a farm. The ground is great;
the location is excellent; and all of
the seasons are perfect, David
Hess said.
The Browning-Hess Farm
thought it was in trouble when industrial developers came in nearby in the 1980s. However, both
sides ended up embracing each
other, and the Browning-Hess
family found it was a great opportunity for the market to gain
more customers.
With the support of the industrial developers, the BrowningHess Farm was able to have its
farmland preserved in 2013.
The Browning-Hess Farm and
the old Winner farm, now the site

of the Burlington County Agricultural Center and Farmers

Market, are the only farms in
Moorestown with preserved
farmland.
The Browning-Hess Farm is 40
acres and known for its tomatoes
and mums. It remains open until
Halloween.
We hope to be the first tomato
on your table for the year and the
last at the end of the year, Hess
said.
Agriculture and open space are
everywhere in Moorestown.
Another big farm family in
Moorestown is Little Hooves
Romneys, owned by Ken and
Charline Carlisle, who lease a majority of the land and many of the
agricultural buildings at the
Agricultural Center. They operate an ever-diversifying operation
ranging from conventional crops,
to breeding and pasturing champion sheep, to small-scale egg production. They are also vendors at
the countys on-site farmers market where they sell high-quality
lamb, eggs and fleece.
Other farms selling directly to
consumers include Flying Feather Farm, Lew's Farm Market and
Flagg's Garden Center. And there
are many additional plots in
Moorestown being farmed for
commercial sales as well.
Napolitano has made it a part
of her mission to visit these
farms that sell directly to consumers over the past week or two
as her own way of acknowledging
the agricultural industry in town.

valuable partnership we have had

with this wonderful community
and look forward to serving the
community together for the next
90 years and beyond.
The Y has enjoyed a strong history with Moorestown. In 1927,
the Y first became involved with
MCH through the International
YMCA Service Club. The club
now called the Y Service Club
still meets weekly at the Mt. Laurel Y. The Community House is
also where Adventure Guides got
their start in the 1920s. In 1926,
the Y established its home base
in the basement of MCH. Numerous other programs were
launched from the Main Street location.
Its really a homecoming for
the Y to be back in our building,
using the same facility they used
so many years ago, said Brad

Kenney,
executive
director,
Moorestown Community House.
As our mission is to provide
more programs to members of
the Moorestown community, having a partnership with the Y only
furthers our mission.
Under the new agreement,
YMCA facility members and
MCH pool members will have access to the pool for free. A variety
of additional membership options are available, from pool
memberships with no contracts
and no joiner fee starting at $35 a
month for an individual and $50 a
month for a family, to private
swim lessons and pay-as-you-go
rates for swimming laps and
water walking.
For more information about
pool memberships at the MCH,
contact Eric Zott at ericz@ymcabc.org or call (856) 231-9622 x350.

Department partners with local groups

to provide job training, socialization
DEPARTMENT
Continued from page 14
Party and Lets Dance party, the
department has focused on providing individuals with special
needs not only tangible skills, but
also social and relationship building skills.
The most profound event the
Department of Parks and Recreation has sponsored recently was
the 2015 Special Needs Providers
Fair. This event was the first resource awareness event of its
kind in Burlington County. The
fair maximized its attendance
with 48 providers and more than
200 attendees. Following the success of this event, the department
is already making plans for the
2016 fair.
Finally, in an effort to help special needs individuals transition
from childhood to adulthood, the
Moorestown
Department
of
Parks and Recreation has partnered with three local groups to
provide job training and environmental socialization. Relationships with MHS, Kingsway
Learning Center and Bancroft
offer older teens and young adults
a wide array of opportunities.

Job Fair
is Oct. 15
A Job Fair for open positions at
Lutheran Crossings Enhanced
Living at Moorestown will be on
Thursday, Oct. 15 from 1 p.m. to 5
p.m. Lutheran Crossings Enhanced Living at Moorestown is
located at 255 East Main St. in
Moorestown.
Now hiring: certified nursing
assistants, licensed practical
nurses, and registered nurse supervisor. Interviews will be conducted onsite with qualified candidates. If you cannot attend our
job fair, you can apply online at
lutheran.atsondemand.com/

These three intuitions have programs that allow individuals with

special needs to develop their lifeskills through jobs and work outside the classroom environment.

These opportunities allow special

needs individuals an opportunity
to enter the world, in a controlled
setting, as an alternative to sheltered workshop situations.
