India. In 2006, the opposition leader of Rajya
Sabha, Jaswant Singh moved Supreme Court of
India for the removal of Election Commissioner
Navin Chawla because he would not be able to
discharge his duties, but later withdrew this
petition. In 2009, Chief Election Commissioner
N Gopalaswami recommended the removal of
election commissioner Navin Chawla to the
President of India. But the President of India,
Pratibha Patil rejected this recommendation and
appointed Naveen Chawla as the next Chief
Election Commissioner of India. This 64 year
old man is an author of many books including
“Mother Teresa” and a “Report on the
rehabilitation of the leprosy affected in India”.
He got many awards in his life. He was awarded
by the Government of Italy with the “Mazzini”
award for his efforts to forge a new relationship
with Italy and strengthening the existing bonds
in 2005. He also got award from the “Institution
of Directors”, New Delhi in 2004.
A man of iron determination and self –
resurrecting faith did not lose any hope at any
point of time and continued to maintain his
conviction throughout. Despite of all
professional hindrances, Navin Chawla did stop
and achieved success by becoming Chief
Election Commissioner of India.
