STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I am Vaibhav Gupta, a third year Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate at Indian Institute of

Technology Jodhpur and I want to work in the department of Industrial and Management
engineering.
As an undergraduate student whose interest lies real life application of Operations Research
and optimization. I am mostly interested in working in the areas like Operations Research,
Energy, Optimization and Supply chain management. I have even done a Project on
Improvement in supply chain management to achieve world class quality in TATA Motors
Lucknow wherein the task was of Solving dropping sequence of parts manufacturing from
supplier side in a Trucks and Bus factory. I have designed a prototype in Microsoft Excel that
helps to generate scheduling of parts from supplier end and reduced communication gap
between supplier and TATA Motors. Also i have learnt complete Tata Motors supply chain
including KANBAN system, scheduling and procurement system, logistics handling, ERP, SAP and
PLM software.
As I had done my internship in Automobile Company, I am very much interested to solve
practical problems in automobile Sector. In Tata Motors I found that there is a need of
development in scheduling and procurement department, sometimes this department fail to
perform its duty, which may lead to stop the Assembly line. This time I would like to analyse
completely the Scheduling and procurement system and wants to develop an alternate system
or modifying the current system. According to me if I am able to solve this problem, it will be
great achievement for me as a undergraduate Engineer.
Besides this, I have gained exceptional work experience and excellent communication and
teamwork skills by spending hours in lab during my project works and presentations in class. In
spite of hectic college life I have taken out time and participated actively in extracurricular
activities and held various positions of responsibility. These activities have not just enhanced my
personality but also boosted up my self-confidence.
I am very interested in this internship opportunity at IIT Kanpur. It would provide me a golden
opportunity of working with the best people in this business in a highly challenging environment
which would be very beneficial towards my persuasion of post-graduation studies.
The distinguished faculty and excellent facilities at your Institute make its graduate program
ideally suited to my professional goals. I have heard lot of praise about your institute and
faculties from my seniors who have spent time there during their internships. With some
background knowledge in this field of Industrial Engineering, facilities available at your institute,
proper guidance and opportunity for research; I think I can contribute in field of Industrial
engineering. I would greatly benefit from this program and hope that it will be a symbiotic
relation.
