CHAPTER SEVEN

ALLAH’S FAVOURS AND GRACE

Now let us make an effort to find out and understand those bestowed with Allah’s
Favours and Grace. For this would help exemplify the Straight Way for us and in this context
under mentioned 257 verses of Qur’an need to be contemplated:-
1

So from whencesoever thou startest forth, turn thy face in the direction of the Sacred Mosque; and
wheresoever ye are, turn your face thither: that there be no ground of dispute against you among the
people, except those of them that are bent on wickedness; so fear them not, but fear Me; and that I may
complete My favours on you, and ye may (consent to) be guided; 2:150

1. Total and consistent obedience in following the message that emanated from the Sacred
Mosque and providing no grounds for dispute against you among the good and enlightened
people of the world will make you eligible for Allah’s Favours and guidance.
*****
2

And hold fast, all together, by the Rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among
yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your
hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the Pit of Fire, and
He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: that ye may be guided. 3:103

2. Collective acceptance, firm following and total dedication for the accomplishment of the
message of your Creator by all, coupled with continued remembrance of Allah’s favours will
make you eligible for Allah’s guidance.
*****
3

Ask the Children of Israel how many Clear (Signs) We have sent them. But if anyone, after Allah's favour
has come to him, substitutes (something else), Allah is strict in punishment. 2:211
7

3. Denial of Allah’s clear Signs and His Favours earns His strict punishment.

4-9

Think not of those who are slain in Allah's Way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the
Presence of their Lord; They rejoice in the Bounty provided by Allah: and with regard to those left behind,
who have not yet joined them (in their bliss), the (Martyrs) glory in the fact that on them is no fear, nor have
they (cause to) grieve. They glory in the Grace and the Bounty from Allah, and in the fact that Allah
suffereth not the reward of the Faithful to be lost (in the least). Of those who answered the call of Allah and
the Messenger, even after being wounded, those who do right and refrain from wrong have a great reward.
Men said to them: "A great army is gathering against you, so fear them": but it (only) increased their Faith;
they said: "For us Allah sufficeth, and He is the best disposer of affairs." And they returned with Grace and
Bounty from Allah; no harm ever touched them: for they followed the good pleasure of Allah: and Allah is
the Lord of bounties unbounded. 3:169-174

10-16

We sent not a Messenger, but to be obeyed, in accordance with the Will of Allah. If they had only, when
they were unjust to themselves, come unto thee and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had
asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-Returning, Most Merciful. But no, by
thy Lord, they can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in
their souls no resistance against thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction. If We had
ordered them to sacrifice their lives or to leave their homes, very few of them would have done it: but if
they had done what they were (actually) told, it would have been best for them, and would have gone
farthest to strengthen their (faith); And We should then have given them from Our Presence a great
reward; And We should have shown them the Straight Way. All who obey Allah and the Messenger are in
the Company of those on whom is the Grace of Allah, of the Prophets (who teach), the sincere (lovers of
Truth), the witnesses (who testify), and the righteous (who do good): ah! what a beautiful Fellowship! Such
is the bounty from Allah; and sufficient is it that Allah knoweth all. 4:64 -70

4. All those who obey Allah and the Messenger, those who are slain in the cause of Allah
and those who only perform the good deeds, those who do right, refrain from wrong and
answer the call of Allah’s Messenger with full conviction even in the face of obvious odds are
in the company of the prophets the truthful and are returned with Grace and Bounty from
Allah.

17-19

O ye who believe! Fulfill (all) obligations. Lawful unto you (for food) are all four-footed animals, with the
exceptions named: but animals of the chase are forbidden while ye are in the Sacred Precincts or in
pilgrim grab: for Allah doth command according to His Will and Plan. O ye who believe! violate not the
sanctity of the Symbols of Allah, nor of the sacred month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the
garlands that mark out such animals, nor the people resorting to the Sacred House, seeking of the bounty
and good pleasure of their Lord. But when ye are clear of the Sacred Precincts and of pilgrim grab, ye may
hunt, and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to
transgression (and hostility on your part). Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not
one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment. Forbidden to you (for food) are:
dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah;
that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to
death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form);
that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows:
9

that is impiety. This day have those who reject Faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not
but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have
chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression,
Allah is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 5:1-3

5. From amongst the believers those who fulfill obligations, accept with total conviction
and submission what comes from their Lord, never violate the sanctity of the symbols of
Allah, always help one another in righteousness and piety, never help any one in sin and ill
will, fear Allah, do not fear those who reject faith are the ones on whom Allah completes His
favours.
6. Above verses contain one exception and that is that when one is forced to go against
these teachings one may violate the same but with no fondness to transgression.

20-23

O ye who believe! when ye prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows;
rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity,
bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye
have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and
rub therewith your faces and hands. Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean,
and to complete His favour to you, that ye may be grateful. And call in remembrance the favour of Allah
unto you, and His covenant, which He ratified with you, when ye said: "We hear and we obey": and fear
Allah, for Allah knoweth well the secrets of your hearts. O ye who believe! stand out firmly for Allah, as
witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart
from justice. Be just: that is next to Piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do. To
those who believe and do deeds of righteousness hath Allah promised forgiveness and a great reward.
Those who reject faith and deny Our signs will be Companions of Hell-fire. O ye who believe! call in
remembrance the favour of Allah unto you when certain men formed the design to stretch out their hands
against you, but (Allah) held back their hands from you: so fear Allah. And on Allah let Believers put (all)
their trust. 5:6-10

Allah did aforetime take a Covenant, from the children of Israel, and We appointed twelve captains among
them. And Allah said: "I am with you: if ye (but) establish regular Prayers, practise regular Charity, believe
in My messengers, honour and assist them, and loan to Allah a beautiful loan, verily I will wipe out from
you your evils, and admit you to Gardens with rivers flowing beneath; but if any of you, after this, resisteth
faith, he hath truly wandered from the path of rectitude. But because of their breach of their Covenant, We
cursed them, and made their hearts grow hard: they change the words from their (right) places and forget
a good part of the Message that was sent them, nor wilt thou cease to find them - barring a few - ever bent
on (new) deceits: but forgive them, and overlook (their misdeeds): for Allah loveth those who are kind.
From those, too, who call themselves Christians, We did take a Covenant, but they forgot a good part of
the Message that was sent them: so We estranged them, with enmity and hatred between the one and the
other, to the Day of Judgment. And soon will Allah show them what it is they have done. O People of the
Book! there hath come to you Our Messenger, revealing to you much that ye used to hide in the Book, and
passing over much (that is now unnecessary): There hath come to you from Allah a (new) light and a
perspicuous Book. Wherewith Allah guideth all who seek His good pleasure to ways of peace and safety,
and leadeth them out of darkness, by His Will, unto the light, guideth them to a Path that is Straight. In
blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. Say: "Who then hath the least
power against Allah, if His Will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all, everyone that is
on the earth? For to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between.
He createth what He pleaseth. For Allah hath power over all things." (Both) the Jews and the Christians
say: "We are sons of Allah, and His beloved." Say: "Why then doth He punish you for your sins? Nay, ye
are but men, of the men He hath created: He forgiveth whom He pleaseth, and He punisheth whom He
pleaseth: and to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between: and
unto Him is the final goal (of all)." O People of the Book! now hath come unto you, making (things) clear
unto you, Our Messenger, after the break in (the series of) Our messengers, lest ye should say: "There
came unto us no bringer of glad tidings and no warner (from evil)"; but now hath come unto you a bringer
of glad tidings and a warner (from evil). And Allah hath power over all things. Remember Moses said to his
people: "O my People! call in remembrance the favour of Allah unto you, when He produced prophets
among you, made you kings, and gave you what He had not given to any other among the peoples. "O my
people! enter the holy land which Allah hath assigned unto you, and turn not back Ignominiously, for then
will ye be overthrown, to your own ruin." They said: "O Moses! in this land are a people of exceeding
strength: never shall we enter it until they leave it: if (once) they leave, then shall we enter." (But) among
(their) God-fearing men were two on whom Allah had bestowed His grace: they said: "Assault them at the
(proper) Gate: when once ye are in, victory will be yours; But on Allah put your trust if ye have faith." They
said: "O Moses! while they remain there, never shall we be able to enter, to the end of time. Go thou, and
thy Lord, and fight ye two, while we sit here (and watch)." He said: "O my Lord! I have power only over
myself and my brother: so separate us from this rebellious people!" Allah said: "Therefore will the land be
out of their reach for forty years: in distraction will they wander through the land: but sorrow thou not over
these rebellious people. 5:12-26
12

7. In order to be eligible for completeness of Allah's favours cleanliness of the perfect order
is one of the preconditions. In this context Allah also desires that we remember and be
grateful to Him for the favours in accordance with the agreement which we opted of our free
will and that was then ratified by Allah who knows even the secrets of our heart.
8. Forgiveness and great rewards and His Blessings and favours are promised to those
who:-
a. Believe in Allah and stand out firmly in His way remaining within the bounds of their
agreement with Allah.
b. Loan to Allah a beautiful loan, fear Allah with complete trust in Him, do not deny
Allah’s signs and do not resist faith.
c. Perform deeds of righteousness and always remain on justice with piety.
d. Witness to fair dealing only and nothing can change them to wrong. They keep
remembering Allah’s favours and believe in His messengers and honour and assist
them.
e. Accept and obey the Twelve Captains appointed by Him to manage their affairs.
f. Establish regular prayers and Practice regular charity.
g. Do not change the words of Allah from their place, do not forget good part of the
message of their Lord and do not indulge in deceiving others.

39-41

The Jews say: "Allah's hand is tied up." Be their hands tied up and be they accursed for the (blasphemy)
they utter. Nay both His hands are widely outstretched: He giveth and spendeth (of His bounty) as He
pleaseth. But the revelation that cometh to thee from Allah increaseth in most of them their obstinate
rebellion and blasphemy. Amongst them We have placed enmity and hatred till the Day of Judgment.
Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah doth extinguish it; but they (ever) strive to do mischief on earth.
And Allah loveth not those who do mischief. If only the People of the Book had believed and been
righteous, We should indeed have blotted out their iniquities and admitted them to Gardens of Bliss. If only
they had stood fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that was sent to them from their Lord,
they would have enjoyed happiness from every side. There is from among them a party on the right
course: but many of them follow a course that is evil. 5:64-66

9. Gardens of Bliss are for those who:-

a. Believe in what Allah says.
b. Perform deeds of righteousness.

Then will Allah say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! recount My favour to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I
strengthened thee with the holy spirit, so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood and in maturity.
Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel. And behold! thou makest out of clay,
as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and thou breathest into it, and it becometh a bird by My leave,
and thou healest those born blind, and the lepers, by My leave. And behold! thou bringest forth the dead
by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) thee when thou didst show
them the Clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them said: `This is nothing but evident magic.' 5:110

10. Prophet Jesus and his mother Mary [PBUT] were the ones who enjoyed Allah’s favours.

44-46

Those who believe, and suffer exile and strive with might and main, in Allah's cause, with their goods and
their persons, have the highest rank in the sight of Allah: they are the people who will achieve (salvation).
Their Lord doth give them glad tidings of a Mercy from Himself, of His good pleasure, and of Gardens for
them, wherein are delights that endure: They will dwell therein forever. Verily in Allah's presence is a
reward, the greatest (of all). 9:20-22

We sent Moses with Our Signs (and the command). "Bring out thy people from the depths of darkness into
light, and teach them to remember the Days of Allah." Verily in this there are Signs for such as are firmly
patient and constant, grateful and appreciative. Remember! Moses said to his people: "Call to mind the
favour of Allah to you when He delivered you from the people of Pharaoh: they set you hard tasks and
punishments, slaughtered your sons, and let your women-folk live; therein was a tremendous trial from
your Lord." And remember! your Lord caused to be declared (publicly): "If ye are grateful, I will add more
(favours) unto you; but if ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed." And Moses said: "If
ye show ingratitude, ye and all on earth together, yet is Allah Free of all wants, Worthy of all praise.14:5-8

Speak to My servants who have believed, that they may establish regular prayers, and spend (in charity)
out of the Sustenance We have given them, secretly and openly, before the coming of a Day in which there
will be neither mutual bargaining nor befriending. It is Allah Who hath created the heavens and the earth
and sendeth down rain from the skies, and with it bringeth out fruits wherewith to feed you: it is He Who
hath made the ships subject to you, that they may sail through the sea by His Command; and the rivers
(also) hath He made subject to you. And He hath made subject to you the sun and the moon, both
diligently pursuing their courses: and the Night and the Day hath He (also) made subject to you. And He
giveth you of all that ye ask for. But if ye count the favours of Allah, never will ye be able to number them.
Verily, man is given up to injustice and ingratitude. 14:31-34

*****
57-62

Allah has said: "Take not (for worship) two gods: for He is just One God: then fear Me (and Me alone)." To
Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and on earth. And to Him is duty due always: then will ye fear
other than Allah? And ye have no good thing but is from Allah; and moreover, when ye are touched by
distress, unto Him ye cry with groans; Yet, when He removes the distress from you, behold! some of you
turn to other gods to join with their Lord, (As if) to show their ingratitude for the favours We have bestowed
on them! Then enjoy (your brief day); but soon will ye know (your folly)! And they (even) assign, to things
they do not know, a portion out of that which We have bestowed for their sustenance! By Allah, ye shall
certainly be called to account for your false inventions.16:51-56

to Him.
f. Assign the sustenance bestowed on them by Allah to others.
*****
63-64

Allah has bestowed His gifts of sustenance more freely on some of you than on others; those more
favoured are not going to throw back their gifts to those whom their right hands possess, so as to be equal
in that respect. Will they then deny the favours of Allah? And Allah has made for you mates (and
Companions) of your own nature, and made for you, out of them, sons and daughters and grandchildren.
And provided for you sustenance of the best: will they then believe in vain things, and be ungrateful for
Allah’s favours? 16:71-72

18. Worldly possessions are not to be confused with Allah’s favours.

*****
65-67

It is Allah Who made out of the things He created, some things to give you shade; of the hills He made
some for your shelter; He made you garments to protect you from heat, and coats of mail to protect you
from your (mutual) violence. Thus does He complete His favours on you, that ye may bow to His Will (in
Islam). But if they turn away, thy duty is only to preach the Clear Message. They recognise the favours of
Allah; then they deny them; and most of them are (creatures) ungrateful. 16:81-83

19. Mastery in atomic warfare and bowing to Allah’s will are the means of having Allah’s
favours completed.

68-70
17

Allah sets forth a Parable: a city enjoying security and quiet, abundantly supplied with sustenance from
every place: yet was it ungrateful for the favours of Allah: so Allah made it taste of hunger and terror (in
extremes) (closing in on it) like a garment (from every side), because of the (evil) which (its people)
wrought. And there came to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they falsely rejected him; so
the Wrath seized them even in the midst of their iniquities. So eat of the sustenance which Allah has
provided for you, lawful and good; and be grateful for the favours of Allah, if it is He Whom ye serve.

We send down (stage by stage) in the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy to those
who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss. Yet when We bestow Our favours on man,
he turns away and becomes remote on his side (instead of coming to Us), and when evil seizes him he
gives himself up to despair! 17:82-83

22. Those bestowed with Allah’s favours are the ones who:-
a. Seek guidance in all fields of their life from Qur’an.
b. Are nothing but just.
c. Never turned away from their Creator Lord.
d. Were never seized by evil.
e. Were never given to despair.

Those were some of the prophets on whom Allah did bestow His Grace, of the posterity of Adam, and of
those whom We carried (in the Ark) with Noah, and of the posterity of Abraham and Israel, of those whom
We guided and chose. Whenever the Signs of (Allah) Most Gracious were rehearsed to them, they would
fall down in prostrate adoration and in tears, 19:58

23. Prophets were chosen and guided and bestowed with Allah’s Grace and Favours.

And that those on whom knowledge has been bestowed may learn that the (Qur-an) is the Truth from thy
Lord, and that they may believe therein, and their hearts may be made humbly (open) to it: for verily Allah
is the Guide of those who believe, to the Straight Way. Those who reject Faith will not cease to be in doubt
concerning (Revelation) until the Hour (of Judgment) comes suddenly upon them, or there comes to them
the Penalty of a Day of Disaster. On that Day the Dominion will be that of Allah: He will judge between
them: so those who believe and work righteous deeds will be in Gardens of Delight. 22:54-56

24. Gardens of delight are for those believers that never rejected faith and continued
performing righteous deeds till the end.

And rehearse to them (something of) Abraham’s story. Behold, he said to his father and his people: “What
worship ye?” They said: “We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them.” He said: “Do
they listen to you when ye call (on them), “Or do you good or harm?” They said: “Nay, but we found our
fathers doing thus (what we do).” He said: “Do ye then see whom ye have been worshipping, “Ye and your
fathers before you?” For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds; “Who
created me, and it is He Who guides me; “Who gives me food and drink, “And when I am ill, it is He Who
cures me; “Who will cause me to die, and then to live (again); “And Who, I hope, will forgive me my faults
on the Day of Judgment… “O my Lord! Bestow wisdom on me, and join me with the righteous; “Grant me
honourable mention on the tongue of truth among the latest (generations); “Make me one of the inheritors

And Solomon was David’s heir. He said: “O ye people! We have been taught the speech of birds, and on
us has been bestowed (a little) of all things: this is indeed Grace manifest (from Allah.)” And before
Solomon were 19arshaled his hosts, of Jinns and men and birds, and they were all kept in order and
ranks. At length, when they came to a (lowly) valley of ants, one of the ants said: “O ye ants, get into your
habitations, lest Solomon and his hosts crush you (under foot) without knowing it.” So he smiled, amused
at its speech; and he said: “O my Lord! So order me that I may be grateful for Thy favours, which Thou
hast bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may work the righteousness that will please Thee: and
admit me, by Thy Grace, to the ranks of Thy righteous Servants.” 27:16-19

When he reached full age, and was firmly established (in life), We bestowed on him wisdom and
knowledge: For thus do We reward those who do good. And he entered the City at a time when its people
were not watching; and he found there two men fighting, one of his own people, and the other, of his foes.
Now the man of his own people appealed to him against his foe, and Moses struck him with his fist and
made an end of him. He said: "This is a work of Evil (Satan): For he is an enemy that manifestly misleads!"
He prayed: "O my Lord! I have indeed wronged my soul! Do Thou then forgive me!" So (Allah) forgave him:
For He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. He said: "O my Lord! for that Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace on
me, never shall I be a help to those who sin!" 28:14-17

28. The ones wishing to be included amongst those bestowed with Allah's Grace even when
they have been given wisdom and knowledge by Allah must see to it that they must never
help those who sin.

Do they not then see that We have made a Sanctuary secure, and that men are being snatched away from
all around them. Then, do they believe in that which is vain, and reject the Grace of Allah! And who does
more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah or rejects the Truth when it reaches him? Is there not a
home in Hell for those who reject Faith? And those who strive in Our (Cause), We will certainly guide them
to Our Paths: for verily Allah is with those who do right. 29:67-69

29. Those who reject the Grace of Allah must surely abide in hell.

Do ye not see that Allah has subjected to your (use) all things in the heavens and on earth, and has made
His bounties flow to you in exceeding measure, (both) seen and unseen? Yet there are among men those
who dispute about Allah, without knowledge and without guidance, and without a Book. To enlighten them!
When they are told to follow the (Revelation) that Allah has sent down, they say: “Nay, we shall follow the
ways that we found our fathers (following).” What! Even if it is Satan beckoning them to the Penalty of the
(Blazing) Fire? 31:20-21

31. Those who enjoy Allah’s bounties and also dispute about Allah not having knowledge,
guidance and Book are destined blazing hell fire.

Seest thou not that the ships sail through the Ocean by the grace of Allah? That He may show you of His
Signs? Verily in this are Signs for all who constantly persevere and give thanks. When a wave covers them
