PowerMate3 Application Note 1

Recording using Cubase LE 5


This document describes how to record a live event using the DIGITAL AUDIO INTERFACE of the PowerMate3. In
preparation for the recording VST connection presets (for live and studio mode) are created in Cubase LE 5.
HINT: In the following it is assumed that the PowerMate is on, configured for the live event, connected with
the PC/Mac using an USB 2.0 port (+ USB 2.0 cable) and the USB driver was successfully installed.

Preparations
1.

Start the Cubase LE 5 application on your PC/Mac. The Cubase LE Open Document Options dialog
appears.

Click on the New Project button. The New Project dialog appears.

Select the Empty template from the Templates list an click on the OK button. The Set Project Folder
dialog appears.

Navigate to the folder you want to store your project to, then click on the OK button. A new, empty project is created in the Cubase window.

Open menu Devices > Device Setup... The Device Setup dialog appears.

Select the entry VST Audio System in the Devices section of the dialog.

Select ASIO for DYNACORD USB-AUDIO from the ASIO Driver dropdown menu.

Select MIDI Port Setup in the Devices section.

Unselect the Checkboxes Visible and In All MIDI Inputs of the DYNACORD SystemCtrl port.
10. Close the Device Setup dialog by clicking the OK button.
CREATING THE PRESETS FOR THE LIVE MODE
Adding outputs
11. Open menu Devices > VST Connections (or press the F4 button). The VST Connections dialog appears.

12. Open the Outputs tab in the VST Connections dialog.

13. If there is already a bus in the Bus Name column listed, open the context menu of the bus and select the
entry Remove Bus. Repeat for all busses listed.

14. Select the entry 2 x Stereo from the Presets Dropdown menu. The two busses S 1 and S 2 are
added.

15. Double click on a Bus Name to match the bus names in Cubase and on the PowerMate. Change the name
of bus S1 to USB 1-2 and of bus S 2 to USB 3-4.

16. Create a new preset including the output configuration by pressing the + icon. The Type In Preset
Name dialog appears. Enter the preset name Live in the text field and close the dialog by clicking the
OK button.

Adding inputs
17. Open the Inputs tab in the VST Connections dialog.

18. If there is already a bus in the Bus Name column listed, open the context menu of the bus and select the
entry Remove Bus. Repeat for all busses listed.

19. Select the entry 1 x Stereo + 2 x Mono from the Presets Dropdown menu. One stereo bus S 1 and
two mono busses M 1 and M 2 are added.

20. Double click on a Bus Name to match the bus names in Cubase and on the PowerMate. Change the name
of bus S1 to MAS L/R, of bus M 1 to AUX 1 and of bus M 2 to AUX 2.

21. Create a new preset including the input configuration by pressing the + icon. The Type In Preset Name
dialog appears. Enter the preset name Live in the text field and close the dialog by clicking the OK
button.
CREATING THE PRESET FOR THE STUDIO MODE
22. Open the Inputs tab in the VST Connections dialog.
23. If there is already a bus in the Bus Name column listed, open the context menu of the bus and select the
entry Remove Bus. Repeat for all busses.

24. Select the entry 4 x Mono from the Presets Dropdown menu. Four mono busses M 1, M 2, M 3
and M 4 are added.

25. Double click on a Bus Name to match the bus names in Cubase and on the PowerMate. Change the name
of bus M 1 to MON 1, of bus M 2 to MON 2, ob bus M 3 to AUX 1 and of bus M 4 to AUX 2.

26. Create a new preset including the input configuration by pressing the + icon. The Type In Preset Name
dialog appears. Enter the preset name Studio in the text field and close the dialog by clicking the OK
button.

Recording in Live mode


LOADING THE LIVE PRESETS
27. Select the Live setting in the USB Record Routing dialog of the PowerMate. Please read the PowerMate
Owners manual for details.

31. Open the Inputs tab in the VST Connections dialog.

32. Select the entry Live from the Presets dropdown menu.

33. Close the VST Connections dialog. The inputs and outputs in Cubase LE 5 are now configured for
recording in live mode.
ADDING TRACKS
34. Select Project > Add Track > Audio. The Add Audio Track dialog appears.

35. Set the Audio Track Configuration to 1 Stereo and close the dialog by clicking the OK button.

36. Add 2 mono audio tracks by repeating the last two steps. Set the Audio Track Configuration to 2 Mono
and close the dialog by clicking the OK button.

37. Activate the Show Inspector button.

38. Select the first audio track Audio 01 and check the input and output routing. The input routing must be
MAS L/R, the output routing must be USB 1-2.

39. Repeat the last step for audio track Audio 02 and Audio 03. For Audio 02 the input routing must be
AUX 1 and the output routing must be USB 1-2. For Audio 03 the input routing must be AUX 2 and
the output routing must be USB 1-2.
SETTING THE LEVEL OF THE AUDIO TRACKS
40. Select the audio track Audio 01.
41. Open the Channel section of the Inspector. The channel fader of the audio track is shown.

42. Activate the loudspeaker icon Monitor (next to the channel fader) to see the level of the MAS L/R signal
in the VU meter.

43. Use the REC SEND & USB OUT control of the PowerMate to set the level of the MAS L/R audio signal sent
via the DIGITAL AUDIO INTERFACE to the highest possible level without clipping. If the signal clips, the
USB indication in the display of the PowerMate changes to MASTER.
44. Use the channel fader in Cubase LE 5 to set the signal level so it never exceeds the marking in the VU
meter.

45. Repeat the last five steps for audio tracks Audio 02 and Audio 03. Use the AUX faders of the PowerMate to set the level of the AUX 1/2 audio signal sent via the DIGITAL AUDIO INTERFACE. If the signal
clips, the USB indication in the display of the PowerMate changes to AUX 1 or AUX 2.
RECORDING
46. Activate the Record enable icon of all audio tracks to be recorded.

47. Click the Record button in the Transport Panel to start recording. Click the Stop button to stop
recording.

PLAYBACK
48. Click the Goto Previous Marker / Zero button to set the cursor to the start of the recording.

49. Click the Play button to start the playback. The signal is available at the stereo input channel USB 1-2 of
the PowerMate.
