Helen Bailey and family on

the passing of Jim Bailey on Sunday,
September 27. He died in the manner in which
he lived - humbly, at peace with his life, in love
with his wife and ready to go to God. He and
Helen have lived together for 64 years. They
were together as he passed. He wished to be
cremated with his ashes spread at sea. The
family plans a celebration of life service at a
later time. Cards for Helen can be sent to 314
W. Whiting, Fullerton, CA 92832. Helen
continues to live at Brookdale Skilled Nursing
Facility.
The family is doing fine. This is a
blessed transition.

Senior Book Club News

The Senior Book Club has

chosen as its next book The House Girl. This
historical fiction debut by Tara Conklin is an
unforgettable story of love, history and a
search for justice set in modern-day New York
and 1852 Virginia. It features two remarkable
heroines and is riveting and powerful, literary
fiction at its very best.
We will be discussing this novel on
November 5, 2015, at the home of Leslie and
Tom Beck.

Kathy Robidouxs
Communion Prayer

Dear Friends,
Due to technical
difficulties, Kathy Robidoux's prayer from the
communion table on Sunday was not heard by
much of the congr egation. Here it is for us to
receive in contemplation and with joy.
Blessings,
DALE
O Giver of the most holy of banquets, we pray
that we will always accept your invitation to
this table willingly. Thank you for choosing us
to be present today to celebrate this meal. We
know that no one who comes to this table will
hunger or thirst for you. You have generously
given us your Son, Jesus Christ, so that we will
know you. Our hunger is satisfied, our thirst is
quenched, our love knows no bounds, because
of your love for us. Let us come and
participate in Gods banquet with
Thanksgiving.
AMEN

Light a Candle for Children

We are midway in the

Light a Candle for Children Vigil
culminating with the church service on
October 18.
The theme for this years Childrens
Sabbath is: How Long Must I Cry for Help?
It often reflects the desperate needs of myriads
of children around the world for food, shelter,
clothing, education and more.
At Childrens Moments a candle will be
lit to remind us of the need of children around
the world. You can find daily prayers and art
from children of the Disciples of Christ
churches on Light a Candle for Children blog

Harvest Festival

Do you have a Foosball

table that Casa could borrow
for this event? Please let Donna know if you
do.
Its not too late to help with this great
community outreach project being organized
by Casa de Oracin to be held on October 31,
from 4 - 8 P.M. in Fellowship Hall and Patio
areas. It will be a carnival atmosphere with
games, bounce house, cotton candy, popcorn,
and prizes. Each child will go home with a bag
of goodies.
We have been asked if we would like to
partner with them in this celebration.
Here are some ways we can help.
1. You can provide candy for the goody
bags. Just bring any amount that you would
like to provide to the office and Donna will see
that it gets to the right place. You can bring it
anytime. That way we will have an idea of
what we will need to purchase.
2. Help Casa de Oracin set up on
Friday and Saturday.
3. Help to staff the event from 4:00 8:00 P.M. (or any part of the time) on
the 31st
Please let me know as soon as possible
what you would like to be a part of so I can let
the Casa people know for their scheduling and
budgeting, and purchase of shirts for all
volunteers.

The Pastor Search Committee has been

busy!

Over the past two months, the Pastor

Search Committee has met almost weekly. We
have reviewed Candidate Profiles and
conducted a mock phone interview with a
pastor from the San Diego area, who is not a
candidate, but agreed to help us prepare for
phone interviews with actual candidates. He
was great and very complimentary of the
questions asked and the overall feeling of the
interview. He also gave us some insight as to
how we could make the interview process even
better. Since then, we have conducted phone
interviews with people from all over the
country, having to adjust our meeting times to
account for different time zones. While we still
have quite a bit of work to do, we appreciate
your ongoing prayers for our committee as we
get closer to bringing a candidate to the
congregation for approval.

A Call for Volunteer

Gardeners to Grow
Sweet Peas for Next
Year's Easter Cross.
Last spring, seven of
our members grew sweet
peas for our Easter Cross, and that gardening
venture was a huge success on Easter
morning
This year, would you like to become
involved in that growing project? Even
those who have only a sunny 6' space one
foot wide could grow a small trellis of six
sweet pea plants. We will provide the sweet
pea plants ready to transplant, and even help
with the preparation and trellis if you do not
have a garden! The sweet peas will be ready
to transplant either in the ground or in a
small container garden by the end of
October. Call the church office, or contact
Barry Woodbridge (714 357-2333 or
bwoodbridge@wbridge.com) if you would
like to volunteer or learn more.

Food Bags for Pathways

Thank you to all who

brought food to fill up the table
and floor space in the Narthex or donated
money to buy food for Pathways.
We collected $380 and 240 cans of food.

Final Sunday To Share In The

2015 Reconciliation Offering
Through the end of
September, the 2015 Reconciliation
Offering stands at $500. Our goal
for the 2015 Reconciliation Offering, we
remind you, is $600 so we need to receive $100
in gifts to reach our goal.
This is the last official day that we
receive this annual Special Offering which
funds projects both in the Pacific Southwest
Region and across our nation to help usthe
Disciples of Christto be an anti-racism/proreconciling church! We remind you that 50%
of what we give through the Reconciliation
Offering comes back to our Region. And, we
repeat what was written a week or two ago. It
is this. Does anyone in our congregation, or
more than one among us, have an idea for a
project to be undertaken in our community
that is anti-racist and pro-reconciling? If so,
please share your idea with the Outreach
Ministry and well put together a Task Force to
work on writing a grant to be submitted to the
Reconciliation Committee of our Region, the
group which distributes the funds from the
Reconciliation Offering that come back to our
Region. This could be another opportunity in
the future for some of us, perhaps many of us,
to be involved in hands-on ministry.
If you have not yet given to this years
Reconciliation Offering we invite you to be
part of this offering this Sunday. Use the
Reconciliation Offering envelope to make your
gift, or simply write the word Reconciliation
on the memo line of your check and place it in
the offering plate today.
Thanks to all of you who have and all of
you who yet will make a gift in support of this
years Reconciliation Offering.
The Outreach Ministry

Less Than A Month From

Now

On Sunday, November 1, between 11

A.M. and 2 P.M. our congregation will host the
annual Alternative Gift Faire. This event is
designed to give all of us, plus any persons
we invite to come with us, or to meet us on the
Plaza that day, an opportunity to make gifts
and/or buy gifts for our personal Christmas
giving that will benefit the needs of others,
many of whom are part of the people Jesus
called the least of these.
Annually, this event has generated
between $12,000 and $15,000 of support for 18
to 20 ministries that have booths on the Plaza.
Thats a lot of money. What you may not know
and be surprised to know, these totals have
been generated by the gifts of some 90 to 100
people. Just think what could be generated to
help others if the number of donors was
increased by 50% or, even better, by 100%!
So, here are two challenges to all of you
who are part of First Christian Church,
Fullerton, and/or its wider family who will
read these words about this years Alternative
Gift Faire:
Challenge #1 We challenge each
member of our congregation who is able come
to the AGF on November 1 to spend at least
$10 to support one ministry of your choosing
among the ministries that will be present.
Challenge #2 We challenge each
member of our congregation to make it a point
to invite at least one other persona friend, a
neighbor, a co-worker, a family member,
someone not connected to our congregation
to come with you to the AGF on November 1.
If youd like to help with this years
AGF, give your name either to Jill Scott or
Mary Anne Richmond, our Co-Chairs, who
are getting lots of support from Donna
Woodbridge in planning for this event. If
youd like to help with the set-up and takedown on the day of the event, let Craig
Wallace know youre available to help with
this work and hell add your name to the list of
those who will be doing these two important
tasks on Sunday, November 1.

David Matson Lectures

Tuesday Night Study Series

Dr. David Matson

Series Begins This Tuesday (October 6) at 7:00 p.m. in Chapman Lounge
Title: "Preach the Gospel"

Some congregations truly wish they had a resident or visiting Christian teacher to inspire
them with learning experiences everyone could understand about some of the most current and timehonored insights into our Bible.
Not only is our congregation uniquely blessed by the presence of such a teacher every October,
but Dr. David Matson finds us to be an engaged and receptive congregation to develop and teach his
latest biblical insights, many of which have gone on for publication nationally now.
Please don't miss out on a wonderful opportunity to learn what exactly is the message we call
"the gospel," a matter so important for our future as a congregation that Pastor Dale has indicated
it is a necessary "laser focus" we all need to explore deeply and clearly.
"Preach the gospel at all times; when necessary, use words." Most of us have heard these words,
usually attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. Some of us have even quoted them on occasion. They
certainly describe the ethos of most main-line Protestant churches, who would rather feed the
homeless than tell people about Jesus. But there are two problems with the above quotation: 1) St.
Francis never said them; 2) they aren't true. Both may surprise you, especially the second. This study
will engage in a thorough biblical investigation of the word "gospel" to discover why this beloved
quotation isn't true and what impact that realization might have on the way we think about the work
and role of the church today. Confusion about the gospel results in confusion about our mission.
Outline:
October 6 - The "Gospel" in the Old Testament: Backgrounds
The word "gospel" doesn't occur very often in the Old Testament, but when it does, it tells us
much about its nature as an oral event.
October 13 - The "Gospel" in the Proclamation of Jesus
We are right to think of the gospel as something that Jesus accomplished for us, but did you
know that Jesus actually preached the gospel as well?
October 20 - The "Gospel" in the Writings of Paul
Paul is actually our earliest source for the term "gospel" being used in a distinctly Christian
sense. Actually, the gospel goes back even before him.
October 27 - Implications
If simply working for social justice is the gospel, how does the church differ from any other
fine humanitarian organization? Is there any compelling reason why a person should attend your
church? Do we even need the church, if other groups and organizations can do the job better?
