CURRICULAR STATEMENT
To develop different dimensions of knowledge on topic Compounds through experiments,
observation, discussion and evaluation by questioning observation of practical works, reporting
presentation etc and applied the knowledge in unfamiliar situation

CONTENT ANALYSIS

Term

Facts

Pure substances, elements, compounds.

(1) H2O is a compound.
(2) Methane (CH4) contains atoms of two elements and hence it is
a compound.
(3) NH3 is a compound having N and H

Concepts :

Compounds are substances formed from two or more elements through

chemical combination and which cannot be separated by physical means.

LEARNING OUTCOME

To enable the pupil

1) to recall the definitions of compounds and identify the same for developing
factual knowledge.

2) to explain the characteristics of compounds for developing conceptual

knowledge.
3)

to exhibit the practical work for developing procedural knowledge

4) validating the process to develop metacognitive knowledge.

PRE REQUISITES
The students already know about pure substances and elements.

TEACHING LEARNING RESOURCES

Materials

Ball and stick models

Audio-visual aids

Chart and images of compounds in laptop.

Classroom Interaction Procedure

Expected pupil response

Introduction
Do you know how many elements present in water we
use every day?
Can you say the elements present in water?
What are the elements present in our sodium chloride?

Yes, two elements.

Hydrogen, oxygen
Sodium, Chlorine.

Whether these substances have same element or

different element?
Can you say the name of these type of substances?
Through this class, we are going to study about these
type of substances.

Different element
Dont know

Presentation
Teacher divided the students into 6 groups. They are
given names A,B,C,D,E,F and ask them to do the
following activities.

Students are arranged into groups.

Activity I
Teacher gave one red ball( labelled as oxygen) and two
black balls (labelled as hydrogen) and ask them to join
as shown by the teacher. Then students were asked to
write answers to the questions given in their card and
after discussion the structure is shown in the laptop.

Students joined according to the

instructions given and shown by the
teacher.

Discussion clues
1. What does red ball indicates?
2. What does black ball indicates?
3. Can you guess the substance? What is it?
4. Can we separate oxygen and hydrogen from water?

Concept to be consolidated.
When we join one oxygen and two hydrogen ,we get
water. It contains more than two elements. But we
cannot separate it.

Oxygen
Hydrogen
Water
No

Activity II
Teacher gave one blue ball ( labelled as nitrogen) and
three black balls (labelled as hydrogen) and ask them to Students joined according to the
join as shown by the teacher. Then they were asked to
instructions given by the teacher.
write questions given in the activity card and after
discussion structure is shown in the laptop.
Discussion clues
1. What does the blue ball indicates?
2. What does the black ball indicates?
3. Can you guess the substance? What is it?
4. Can you separate the elements by physical means?

Concept to be consolidated
When one nitrogen and three hydrogen are joined, we get
ammonia. It contains more than two elements. It cannot be
separated by physical means.

Nitrogen
Hydrogen
Ammonia
No

Activity - III
Teacher gave one red ball( labelled as carbon) and four Students follows the instructions given by
black balls( labelled as hydrogen) and ask the
the teacher.
students to join as shown by the teacher. Then they
were asked to write answers to the questions given in
the activity card.
Discussion clues.
1. What does the red ball indicates?
2. What does the black ball indicates?
3. Can you guess the substance?
4. Can you separate the elements by physical means?

Concept to be consolidated
When one carbon and four hydrogen are joined, we get
methane. It contains more than two elements. It cannot
be separated by any physical means.

Carbon
Hydrogen
Methane
No

Generalisation
When one oxygen and two hydrogens are joined, we get
water. When one nitrogen and three hydrogens are joined,
we get ammonia. When one carbon and four hydrogens
are joined, we get methane. All these contains more than
two elements. And these elements cannot be separated by
any physical means.

FOLLOWUP ACTIVITIES
1. What are the elements present in water?
2. What are the elements present in ammonia?
3. What are the elements present in methane?
4. How many elements are present in each?
5. Can we separate the elements by physical means?
6. Can we called these as compounds?
7. Define a compound
