Trailer Deconstruction- Iron Man 3

Camera
There is an establishing shit at
the beginning of the trailer,
this is to show the equilibrium,
one of Todorovs Narrative
Stages. This shows the setting
to be peaceful before the

disruption occurs.

The protagonist is positioned

in the middle of the screen
with saluting men either side
of him connoting his power
within the film. He is shown to
be superior and more
important from the framing of
the shot and the respectful
behaviour of the other men.

A close up shot is used which

shows the protagonists
determined face. It clearly
identifies the hero, one of
Propps Character Types, so
the audience immediate
connect to him.
A low angle is used to look
directly up towards the villain

Sound
There is dramatic music
which builds up tension as
the comic strips move
faster across the screen
which would attract
audiences who read the
original Marvel comic
books.
A deep voiceover is used
to create suspense and
sound threating as he is
presented to be the
villain. This already makes
the audiences become
fearful and cautious of the
villains motives within the
film.
Another voiceover is used
of the news reporters
which has a familiar tone
of voice and phrases
which the audience would
usually expect to hear on
the News.
Dramatic and tense music
is played with a high
volume to emphasis the
increase in action and
suspense. The nondiegetic sounds highlight
the genre and shows to
the audience that the film
is fast pace and energetic.

as he is shown to have power

and control. He is dominant in
this trailer and is presented to
be a threat to the hero.
Mise- En- Scene
The hero and the villain are
shown to be complete
opposing characters. This can
be shown in the heros
powerful and metallic suit
whilst the villain is
stereotypically wearing all
black. These highlights
Strausses binary oppose
characters as they are
displayed to be a sign of good
versus evil.
A helicopter is shown in the
trailer. This iconography is a
massive hint to showing that
the

genre is action; this is also

presented in the explosions,
guns and the car chases.
The setting in the trailer is of a
familiar setting which could be
used as the audience can
identify with it.

Low key lighting is used when

there are scenes with the
villain to connote his darkness
and his threat towards the
hero. In contrast, high key

Editing
The main transition used
is fade to black which is
mainly used at the
beginning of the trailer to
show the equilibrium as
everything is slow and
undisturbed.
Nearer to the beginning of
the trailer, the shots are
slower and longer to show
the tranquillity. This is
changed when the
equilibrium is disrupted as
the shots become more
frequents, shorter and fast
pace. Additionally, nearer
to the beginning the shots
alternate between the
hero and the beginning to
connote the contrast
between good and evil.
The comic strips are
edited in to the trailer as
an intertextual reference
from the original format of
the superhero stories. The
comic strips are iconic and
are a unique selling point
for people to watch the
films if they were a fan of
the comic book in the
past.

A green screen is used

lighting is used when the hero

is revealed to the audience to
indicate that he has power and
is open to his intentions of
saving people in society.
The casting in the film consists
of two extremely famous
actors which could be a unique
selling point. The main stars
are Robert Downey Jr. and
Gwyneth Paltrow which could
persuade people to go and see
the film as they are successful
actors.

when the people are

falling out of the
aeroplane to emphasise
the huge height they are
falling.

Slow motion of an explosion

makes the scene more
dramatic and it also
stereotypes the action

genre.
