ABSTRACT

Mr.Laurente

Information Technology (IT) security is an issue which cannot be

wished away by organizations and particularly Small and
Medium Enterprises (SMEs). SMEs should embrace IT security
in order to realize the benefits of IT without compromising the IT
security status. Much like any other business asset, information
is an asset that needs to be strategically managed and protected.
It is therefore imperative that SMEs understand the value of
information contained within their business systems and have a
framework for assessing and implementing IT security. To
address challenges faced by SMEs especially in Kenya, this
research establishes an Information Technology (IT) framework
that can allow Kenyan SMEs implement cost effective security
measures.Particularly this work considers IT security
requirements and appropriate metrics. There is evidence from the
research to suggest that despite having some IT security measures
in place, Kenyan SMEs still face some serious IT security
challenges. In the light of the challenges faced by Kenyan SMEs,
this work recommends a framework which is supposed among
other things provide some metrics of evaluating the effectiveness
of implemented security measures. The framework is likely to
assist SME stakeholders measure the effectiveness of their
security enhancingmechanism

1. INTRODUCTION
K12 = Kindergarten + 6 Years of Elementary Education + 4 Years
of Junior High School (Grades 7 to 10) + 2 Years of Senior High
School (Grades 11-12)
This equation expresses the determination of all Educational
Institutions spearheaded by our government through DepEd to
provide better quality education for all. The enhanced curriculum
added 2 more years to empower students with knowledge and
skills sufficient to undertake employment that can lead to better
career path. The K12 framework aims to provide each individual
with a holistic development through the following skills: Life and
Career Skills, Learning and Innovation Skills, Information,
Media and Technology Skills and Effective Communication
Skills.
The key changes in Secondary Education are Structure,
Curriculum and Assessment. It is student centered that
concentrates on the holistic learning and development of the
students making them self reliant and capable of long term
learning. In Junior High School, the students will take 8
compulsory subjects, namely, English, Math, Science, Filipino,
AP, MAPEH, EsP, and TLE subjects are based on the Training
Regulations from TESDA to enable the students to acquire a
National Certificate (Levels 1 and 2) that gives them the work
opportunity in the industry. TLE subjects in the 7th and 8th
Grade are exploratory. They are given the opportunity to explore
from a maximum of 8 TLE courses, 4 courses in 7th Grade and
another 4 courses in 8th Grade.Once the student reached the 9th

Grade they are required to choose 1 course to specialize in based

from what they had in Grades 7 and 8. It will earn them a
Certificate of Competency in 9th Grade and a National
Certificate I and National Certificate II in 10th Grade. In 11th
and 12th grade there are 7 compulsory subjects and a required
specialization in any of the following:

Entrepreneurship

Tech Voc

Academics (Science, Math, Language Foreign and

Philippine Literature, Journalism, Sports, Arts)

The Enhanced K12 program was implemented back in School

Year 2012 2013 and is now at its 3rd year of implementation.
Private schools are in the process of aligning itself with the core
objectives of the K12 program provided by the Department of
Education but maximize all resources and capabilities to provide
an extensive instructional approach, learning resources, learning
facilities, time allocation per subject, comprehensive content and
process in all subject areas. Currently the TLE subjects reflects
the standard program required by DepEd but we strive to
improve and expand all learning possibilities that can further
develop students to be well rounded globally competitive and
adequately prepared for the field of work, entrepreneurship and
higher education.
School administrators in the private schools deals with the
difficulty of complying with the requirements, standards, and
policies in their institutions in providing quality learning to
students based on the objectives set by DepEd for K to 12
programs. It also requires the development and modification their
School program and curriculums, and managing administrative
operations. It also requires accurate information gathering and
information sharing among private schools to facilitate
management of cross enrollees, availability of subject track and
courses and further coordination of program and curriculum
development. The aforementioned difficulties require an effective
and efficient system that can handle management and decisionmaking such as a College Management Information System
(CMIS). [1]
The advent of smartphones and tablets has provided dominant
communications and interaction among students and educators. It
has become a tool inside the classroom and provided a way for
educators to improve teaching methodologies and to have real
time evaluation of student performance. The increasing
capabilities of smartphones and tablet devices create
opportunities that can help in facilitating effective management
of schools and implementation of school programs. Tablets will
become the virtual classroom, and an emerging class of tools will
let students and employees manage digitally almost every aspect
of their educational and professional life. [2]

2. The System
The Cloud-Based Information Management System can be
developed using different software and can be hosted by Amazon

S3, but other independent cloud services can provide hosting

services. The use of different web browsers can facilitate ease of
access and real time output of information gathering and sharing.
This design is based on Service-oriented Architecture (SOA)in
constructingschool-wide systems. [2] The portal will provide
access to the sub-modules for administration, student, faculty,
research, programs, curriculum, and physical facilities. It will also
feature functions such as add, edit, delete, and share links about
different K to 12 based learning and development.
