During that time, though I was fortunate to be able to build a huge variety of wonderful models, | always wanted to ‘concentrate on ust one, post-war military aircraft. The fesult ofthat desire is in your hands now: Cold War Aircraft Modeller. ‘So what do | have planned for this new magazine? From the off, decided that l wanted to produce a journal that was more in keeping with those that | remember from my first tentative steps in the hobby. The frst ime | had the ‘money to buy a magazine was in the winter of 1978 when | ‘bought the December issue of Scale Models. The cover was emblazoned with an image of a Vulcan that was there to lustrate a build feature on a vac-orm ki ofthe same ‘icra. | was hooked. I must have read that magazine a hhundred times over the years, even today owning a copy that stil enjoy! | folowed ths with an edion of Scale ‘AireraR Modeling that | managed to buy from the local vilage shop - which was rather odd in retrospect, as | dont remember them ever stocking such things! No mater, the die was cast and I never looked back, buying copies of these two publications, along with the ‘rginal Aire magazine, whenever ‘and wherever | coud What struck me about those ‘magazines was the amount of Information that each one contained {and how much there was to read. ‘They may not have been the most stylish in terms of design (remember, we are talking about thirty years {2go...) but they were in terms of EE content and that's something that set | A Fresh New Beginning. them apart. Scale Models, wih Ray Rimmel! at the helm has simply never been bettered in my opinion ‘And so we come ful circle and | now have the chance to perhaps create an homage to those classic tiles, where Information reigned supreme. | hope that over the life of this tite I can offer the readers plenty of information on how to {et the best from their aera modeling projects. Though ‘We wil feature techniques, they will not be the overiding factor inthe choice of article - his wil aways be the mode! and the information we can provide about not ont the kit {where appropriate), but aso the real aera. With less space to pay with, shots ofthe completed models wil not be used a filer, nor will pages of news, thumbnail reviews and other ephemera that wil be readiy avaiable elsewhere. The content willbe solely dedicated tothe features. And nothing else What struck me about those magazines was the amount of information that each one contained and how much there was to read In terms of content, | am planning to present models of aireraf that served between 1947 and 1991, which Seems tobe the agreed dates forthe Cold Wer. In 0 doing, we will be dealing with a wide range of aircraft, both military and if {feel tinteresting enough, civilian. POINT The Shape Of Things To Come? '5 'm putting this together, Ive been reading an on-going debate on Hyperscale about the Revel 219 and its inaccurate propels. Ive been doing tis with some interest and fel thatthe discussion has raised some very interesting points - not only about the intricacies ofthis particular kit's features, but also about the hobby in general | wonder if can offer my thoughts on what this says about us as modelers and the way the hobby has {developed over the last few years. Though it will cenre around a subject not particularly pertinent tothe Cold War, it wil serve to act as a metaphor for a broader discussion. Firstly, this hobby has never been in better shape. The idea that models such as the ‘219 could ever be Teleased in 1/92 is almost eye-wateringly amazing. Seriously, who would have thought that possible, even afew years ‘9907 And now we are onthe cusp of seeing not one, but wo kis being released of tis imposing aircraft. It realy is ‘tUnning. That being £0. | have been lef o wonder about the discussions regarding the props (the kt pars dont ‘accurately reflect the originals) and whether or not as a group we are unable to see the wood for the trees, Here's why. ‘This isa 1/32 Heinkel 219 that to al intents and purposes, is a stunning renciton ofthis aircraft ata riciculously ow price. The resuts wil not only bea model that many thought would never be seen in 1/32, but one that will be a dream to build and result in a replica that will look incredible inthe display case. And yet despite that, the overwhelming iscussion has been not about the 98% of the kt that i very good, but the 2% that seems on the face of it tobe very oor Whyis that? "Now, before anyone starts to argue that Im just another apologist forthe “just build it and accept it” brigade, Im not | {get just as hung up on inaccuracies as anyone else and | eel thatthe debates that happen in on-line chat-rooms help push the hobby forward. | was for instance, happy to hear ofthe problems associated withthe Academy F-16, the "Trumpeter AV.88 or the Revell Ventura, Those models exhibited a range of problems that ruined ther look, problems that would have been cificut to deal with even by the more experienced modeller and that helped me make an informed choice when it came to ther purchase. 'No, fm talking about an error in a kt that could, no, should, be an easy fx by those with some basic ski ‘And here's my point Have we realy all become so incapable atthe workbench, that we spend this amount of time on whats, le’ face it, a very smal pat of such a sparkling release as the Revell 219? Had the aicrame been shot and the outine inaccurate (a in the case of Academy's F-16 Fighting Falcon) | could understand te the fear of trying to correct the problem, but we are taking about pars that can be reshaped with the tools and materials that we all have in our workshops, don't you ‘think? (Okay, yes, | agree that in the case ofthe 219, the designers had made a mistake with ther interpretation’ of the shape ofthe blades and certainly inthe comparisons provided on Hyperscale, there Is a problem. But are we now to assume that every product that we buy, no matter what tis, should always be perfect? Of course nat - the idea is simply preposterous, How many meas wil ou buy that are not Michelin Star quality? How many fims do you goto that are not Up to the standard of Citizen Kane? Building kits ofan actual object isnot an exact science, no matter what we would lke to believe, No kit will ever be a Perfectly accurate reproduction of areal object. Never. They would simply not be able to mould the abject to that level Of tolerance and so everything that you buy and build, will aways be a compromise tht is as close as it gets and be the way that the designer has interpreted how the components on the real machine should look. Take the Tamiya Spite for Instance: weren't those nose panels incredibly fne? So in-scale. An amazing piece of moulding that finaly reproduced these items as they look onthe real thing! Well no. They were sti ike boiler pate in comparison withthe real panels. ‘Scaled-up, they would have been terfimes as thick asthe orignal | appreciate that not everyone will agree with me over this and I'm not looking to pigeon-hole anyone with opinions, but | ‘am stating to worry that such a create hobby as ours is being diluted tothe point where skils that many used to take for granted (such as reworking parts to make them more accurate, where needs-be) are becoming an allen concept.
