Aim

Objectives

To establish and
maintain a safe
and healthy
environment.

1. To raise awareness amongst students and other site


users of health and safety issues and to encourage
good practice.
2. To take all reasonable precautions to protect
peoples health & safety on and off the school site.
3. To take prompt and appropriate action in the event
of accidents and emergencies.

Make sure that all colleagues know when

Complete risk assessments for students
giving particular cause for concern.
Check that new staff plan for health &

and First Aid rotas and boxes.

Give Health & Safety the highest of priorities


by:
allocating sufficient resources to H&S
priorities;
enlisting LA support & advice as

relevant documentation, and do so;
and ensuring that staff and students know
their roles in the effective management of
evacuations and critical incidents.

Know and apply special Health & Safety


measures required to work safely in your
area.
Make sure that you have thought through
and completed risk assessments for all
potentially hazardous activities:
for a subject like PE, this will mean
designated procedures and approaches
for each sport;
in Science, particular experiments may
need their own risk assessment to
enhance
normal
procedures
and
practices;
in Resistant Materials a tidy working
area, with plenty of clearly marked
space around hazardous equipment is
essential; so too is adult supervision at
all times;
and in Catering, youngsters need to be
drilled in the safe use of ovens & other
electrical equipment as well as
procedures for hot pans and movement
around the room.

Give the Schools Health & Safety and


Safeguarding policies & procedures the
highest priority:
read up on, attend necessary training
and become expert on the Health &
Safety requirements for all the areas in
which you work;
make sure that you follow regulations
to the letter in your own work;
and make sure that electrical & other
equipment is appropriately maintained
& checked.
Check that teachers and other adults
working in your area have similarly high
standards, explaining / reminding them of
Health & Safety procedures as necessary.
Challenge students when they are in
breach of health & safety expectations,
pointing out potential risks as well as the
correct practices & procedures.
Report concerns to your Curriculum Team
Leader and/or the Business Manager.

Students

Take Health & Safety seriously, modeling


the adult, responsible approach we expect
of everyone.
Follow the procedures for reporting
accidents and enlisting First Aid support.
Know and apply any special Health &
Safety measures required to work safely
your own area.
Complete risk assessments for all
potentially hazardous and off site
activities.
When taking students off site, make sure
that all other documentation is completed
appropriately.
Be aware to issues in your working area,
reporting concerns and defects on

Take Health & Safety seriously. Always


behave responsibly and in a way that does
not put your own or other peoples Health

walk sensibly in and around the
building, keeping to the left in/on busy
stairways and corridors, being helpful
and courteous at all times;
follow all safety rules and procedures,
