Inflation in Brief
1.
CPI inflation, General, increased by 3.2% on year-on-year basis in May 2015 as compared to 2.1% in the
previous month and by 8.3% in May 2014. On month-on-month basis, it increased by 0.8% in May 2015
as compared to increase of 1.3% in the previous month and decrease of 0.3% in May 2014.

Core inflation measured by non-food non-energy CPI (Core NFNE) increased by 4.9% on (YoY) basis in
May 2015 as compared to 5.4% in the previous month and by 8.7% in May 2014. On (MoM) basis, it
showed no change in May 2015 as compared to 1.4% in the previous month and 0.5% in May 2014.

Core inflation, measured by 20% weighted trimmed mean CPI (Core Trimmed) increased by 3.9% on
(YoY) basis in May 2015 as compared to 3.1% in the previous month and by 8.3% in May 2014. On
(MoM) basis, it increased by 0.1% in May 2015 as compared to increase of 0.6% in the previous month
and an increase of 0.3% in May 2014.

SPI inflation on YoY increased by 1.2% in May 2015 as compared to decrease of 1.6% a month earlier
and of an increase of 7.7% in May 2014. On MoM basis, it increased 1.3% in May 2015 as compared to
increase of 0.4% in the month earlier and decrease of 1.5% in May 2014.

WPI inflation on YoY basis decreased by 1.8% in May 2015 as compared to decrease of 2.9% a month
earlier and an increase of 7.3% in May 2014. WPI inflation on MoM basis it increased by 1.1% in May
2015 as compared to increase of 0.9% a month earlier and decrease of 0.1% in May 2014.

Figures 1 and 2 show graphically the data of Table 1. Table 1.1 shows Period Average and YoY
percent changes in indices of three years.

1. Month-on-month Top few commodities which varied from previous month i.e. April 2015 are given
below:Food Items Increased:
Vegetables (11.49%), Chicken (10.70%), Fresh Fruits (9.16%), Onions (7.34%), Pulse Mash
(5.97%), Gram Whole (5.81%), Gur (3.09%), Pulse Masoor (3.03%), Sugar (2.47%), Betel Leaves &
Nuts (1.25%) and Pulse Moong (1.08%).
Decreased: Eggs (5.91%), Wheat (2.86%), Potatoes (2.82%), Cooking oil (1.69%), Vegetable Ghee
(1.46%), Wheat Flour (1.07%), and Mustard Oil (1.06%).
Non-food Items Increased: Kerosene Oil (1.40%) and Mechanical Service (1.21%).
Decreased: Washing Soaps & Detergents (1.47%).

Year-on-Year: Top few commodities which varied from previous year i.e. May 2014 are given
below:Food Items Increased: Tomatoes (134.77%), Onions (40.39%), Pulse Mash (21.46%), Cigarettes
(20.50%), Fresh Vegetables (18.11%), Pulse Gram (17.95%), Besan (13.94%), Sugar (11.53%)
and Tea (8.17%).
Decreased: Potatoes (67.95%), Vegetable Ghee (11.15%), Cooking Oil (11.08%) and Rice
(8.61%).
Non-food Items Increased: Motor Vehicle Tax (36.71%), Sewing Needles & Dry Cells (11.35%),
Education (10.83%), Tailoring (10.46%) , Woolen Readymade Garments (10.31%), Cotton Cloths
(7.69%) and Readymade Garments (7.27%).
Decreased:
Kerosene Oil (23.73%), Motor Fuel (19.52%) and Transport Services (6.01%).
III.
Quintile-wise percentage changes YoY and MoM are given below in Table 3. The series from April 2014 to
May 2015 is also graphed below in Figure 3.

over the corresponding month of the last year. YoY and MoM movements, from April, 2014 to May 2015 are also

Fruits (8.01%), Cotton Seeds (7.37%) and Maize (5.40%).
Decreased: Potatoes (7.88%), Eggs (4.17%) and Wheat (3.37%).
2. Year-on-year Top few commodities which varied from previous year i.e. April, 2014 are given
below:Increased: Vegetables (36.98%), Other Cereal Flour (24.79%), Pesticides (23.64%),
Tobacco Products (19.85%), Woolen Carpets (16.23%), Pulses (15.46%), Sugar (15.21%),
Quilt (14.16%) and Pipe Fitting (14.03%).
Decreased: Potatoes (76.21%), Kerosene Oil (37.87%), Diesel (31.59%), Furnace Oil
