Course
This class meets MWF from 11:00am to 11:50am in SCI 146 for lecture. The lab is in SCI 116 on
Tuesdays 8:00am10:50am (L1) or 11:30am2:20pm (L2). The course is worth 4.00 credit hours.

Catalog Description
A beginning calculus based physics course for physical science, mathematics and engineering majors.
Provides a basis for further studies in physics and the applied sciences. Topics covered are mechanics
and thermodynamics. Credit in both PHYS 201 and 211 will not be granted. Prerequisites:
Concurrent enrollment or credit in MATH 251 and a grade of C in MATH 201.
Evaluation
Your final grade will be based on the categories described below. The grading scale will be:
90% A 100%
80% B < 90%
70% C < 80%
60% D < 70%
0% F < 60%
Exams
There will be 5 regular exams given throughout the semester, each worth 10% of your final grade.
These will be administered during the scheduled lab time. The comprehensive final exam will be
given on Thursday, December 17 from 10:30am to 12:30pm. It will be worth 15% of your final grade.
20% of each regular exam will be based on remembering specific formulas. The equation quiz will be
given in class on the Friday before each exam, which is normally a review day. When you take the
rest of the test in lab, you will be provided a standardized equation sheet.
Homework
Written and/or online homework will be assigned almost every class period. All of your homework
grades totaled together will count for 20% of your final grade. Homework submitted one class period
late will be penalized 50%. No credit will be given after this.
Online homework will be administered through Expert TA (theexpertta.com) at no cost to you.
Instructions for accessing and using this service are available on Canvas. The class code for
registration is 660BC8-14S. The late policy above also applies to Expert TA, but it is automatically
built into the system. Only the individual questions submitted late will be penalized.

Laboratory
Students will work in pairs during lab, but each student must submit his or her own completed report
for grading. These will typically be due at the next lab period. (No late work accepted, and no makeups.) All of your lab grades totaled together will count for 10% of your final grade.
Quizzes
Pre-lecture quizzes will be administered through Canvas. You are expected to read the assigned text
and answer these questions as preparation for class. Quizzes are worth 5% of your total grade. You
should complete these even if absent from class. No late submissions will be accepted.

Attendance
Excessive absences (more than two weeks worth) may result in your being dropped from the course
after a warning. The student should consult a classmate to find out what information was missed
during an absence and should submit completed assignments quickly.
Officially excused absences will not hurt your grade if you coordinate and cooperate with the
instructor. Please still attempt to complete homework on time if possible. However, do not expect any
opportunity to recover points missed due to an unexcused absence.
Notice
The instructor reserves the right to modify any part of this syllabus in the event of extenuating
circumstances or if a policy is judged to be flawed. Students will be notified promptly.
Academic Integrity
Cheating in all its forms is inconsistent with Christian faith and practice and will result in sanctions
up to and including dismissal from the class with a failing grade. If there is ever any question at all
concerning what constitutes cheating, please consult the instructor.
Dress Code
All students are expected to abide by the Student Handbook. A student may be asked to leave class or
other activities if they are not in keeping with these expectations.

Students with Disabilities
It is the policy for Harding University to accommodate students with disabilities, pursuant to federal
and state law. Therefore, any student with a documented disability condition (e.g. physical, learning,
or psychological) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the instructor and
the Disabilities Office at the beginning of each semester. (If the diagnosis of the disability occurs
during the academic year, the student must self-identify with the Disabilities Office as soon as
possible in order to get academic accommodations in place for the remainder of the semester.) The

Time Management Expectations
For every hour in class, the typical student should expect to spend at least two clock hours on courserelated work, including but not limited to out-of-class time spent reading, problem solving, reviewing,
organizing notes, preparing for upcoming quizzes/exams, and other activities that enhance learning.
Communication
Important class notifications will primarily come to you in the form of Canvas announcements. This
makes it easier for you to go back later and find any information related to my class. To ensure that
you receive these updates in a timely manner, you may need to change your settings in Canvas. Click
on Settings at the top right corner. Then click on Notifications in the menu at the left edge.
Change your preferences so that announcements are emailed to you ASAP. You can also set how
often you wish to receive other messages.
In addition, communication will sometimes be sent to your Harding email address. You are fully
responsible for checking this account daily, or have it forwarded to your primary address.

but will always be held on Tuesdays in lab.
