READING HABITS OF HUMAN KINETICS

4TH YEAR STUDENT OF PUP MANILA, SY 2014-2015

CHAPTER I:
A. INTRODUCTION
Reading is an active mental process. Collins and Cheek (1999) describe
reading as a process that requires the use of complex thought processes to
interpret printed symbols as meaningful units and comprehend them as a
thought unit in order to understand a printed message. According to Rubin
(2002), reading is a total integrative process that starts with the reader and
includes the affective, perceptual, and cognitive domains. Okebukola (2004)
affirms that, through reading, humans have the tools to transmit knowledge
to each succeeding generation; it allows one to listen to the wisdom and
people of the ages. This is emphasized by many different religious traditions.
The Apostle Paul admonished Timothy study to show yourself approved unto
God (11 timothy 2:15). Islam holds acquisition of knowledge in high esteem.
The holy Quran reveals that the first communication between Allah and
Prophet Muhammad was knowledge-based, - Iqraa, meaning read or
recite (Quran 96: 1-5).
Some historical background state essays written in the 1980s in
England where Robert Darnton remarked the work in the history of the book
and the history of reading that had become so specialized and so profuse that
we needed an orderly mapping of the fields. Yet, more than a decade later,
and in the midst of growing interest in these histories, the terrain looks, if
anything, less orderly than when Darnton called for the surveyor's tools. Even
textual bibliography, once the most stable and staid of humanist disciplines,
seems now the very center of post-modern controversies over the fluidity of
text and author. Dozens of recent essays and monographs have addressed
the histories of reading on two continents and more, in a number of
languages, and across the divides of gender, class, and generation. Scholarly
societies have formed for the study of the production and consumption of
books; and conferences, seminars, and institutes have seen a proliferation of
methods and ideas among those working at this nexus of material culture
and intellectual life. Indeed, the pace of research in the history of the book
and the history of reading may not allow sufficient perspective for surveying
work when the field and its borders are in flux.
Hence, Reading habits in the Philippines still has no history, So we
should earn and gain knowledge to make a history of Reading habits here in
our country.
People have different reading skills. One would be to look at the source
of data first, then search for possible information. One would be trying hard

to understand the data because they cannot understand it. One would be
treating it a piece of cake. He understands it perfectly. One would be having
trouble understanding it at first, but at the end, he gets the information.
Lastly, there will be the one who would be dependent on his colleagues,
asking for information. See that not all individuals have the same experiences
because we have different reading habits.
D. Reason
Young students with poor reading habits have a higher chance of anti-social
behavior. Delinquency; school violence, bullying, hacking computers, and
even examination malpractices have a correlation with poor reading habits.
This does not mean that those with poor reading habits display such
behavior; however, poor reading habits are associated with such behavioral
patterns while good reading habits help develop a steady and constructive
mind. The acquisition of reading skills has a beneficial effect on people in
many ways. Besides learning reading strategies, readers learn good reading
habits.
Poor reading habits occur in people because reading is not considered a relevant
leisure activity as it does not form part of peoples social interaction and reading is
considered a solitary pursuit and is not attractive compared with interactive activity
of some students of Human Kinetics. That made us interest this research. This
research is to inform and educate the people on how the students of human kinetics
develop reading habits even though their acquirement of knowledge is more on
physical learning.

D. Purpose of the research

The purpose of our research is to implement the importance of habitual reading
among people who thought they least need it. We want to know the status of
reading habits of Human Kinetics students who is more likely excels physically.

The ability to read well is absolutely critical to success in life that is why
everyone must become fully competent in reading to succeed in school and
discharge responsibilities as a citizen of a democratic society. There are some
experiences of people about reading habits. According to Tracy (2008),
reading is the only form of entertainment that is also an essential life skill.
Reading is a skill that must be nurtured from a childs earliest years. Once
children know how to read, they still need support to reach their full potential
as readers. Today, students with poor reading skills receive poor grades at
school, get easily distracted and frustrated, have behavior problems, seem to
dislike school, and often fail to develop to their full potential.
Reading habit is a behavior that should come naturally, just like eating every
day. It is a thing that we usually do so this is also how we do the reading.
