ThiscircuitwillprovideanoutputinBinaryCodedDecimalfromanyoftheinput
switches.Theinputswitchesmaybeexpandedto16switches,providinga
HexadecimaltoBCDconversion.

Notes
Whenanyparticularkeyispressed,itsvaluewillappearinBCDformatthe
outputs(A,B,C&D).Itwillremainthereuntilanotherkeyispressed.The12
keysproduceoutputsupto"1011".Extendedto16keys,thecircuitwillgive
thefullHEXtoBCDconversion.
MemoryModule:
TheabovecircuitproducesanoutputONLYwhiletheinputswitchisdepressed.
Tomakeaconvertorwithalatchedoutput,thefollowingmodificationsare
made.EachCMOS'AND'gatehasitsfreeinputtiedtoVcc,andbytheactionof
R1throughR4any'hiinput'willthereforecausetheoutputtobelatched.

TheLEDsareavisualindicationofthevalue.Theyarenotnecessarytothe
operationofthecircuit.Ifyouwish,youmayleavethemouttogetherwith
theirassociatedresistors(R5,R6,R7&R8).
Thecircuitworksatvoltagesfrom5to15vdc.PleasenotethatA,B,C&Dare
connecteddirectlytotheoutputsoftheCmosIC.Youwillneedtoregulatethe
loadyourapplicationplacesontheseoutputs.
Construction:
Becausethekeypadmaybeusedwithoutthememory,thelayoutsaredrawn
separately.Ifyoubuildthembothonthesamepieceofstripboard,isolatethem
fromoneanother.Cutallofthetracksexceptforthesixthatjointhekeypad
terminalstothememorymodule.Alwayscheckcarefullythatthecopperiscut
allthewaythrough.Sometimesasmallstrandofcopperremainsatthesideof

thecutandthiswillcausemalfunction.Ifyoudon'thavethepropertrack
cuttingtool,thena6to8mmdrillbitwilldo.Justusethedrillbitasahand
toolthereisnoneedforadrillingmachine.
BoardLayout:

Forclarity,allthecomponentsareshownlyingflatontheboard.However,
thoseconnectedbetweencloseoradjacenttracksaremountedstanding
upright.UsingasocketreducesthechancesofdamagingtheICandmakesit
easiertoreplaceifnecessary.Thelinksarebarecopperwireonthecomponent
sideoftheboard.TwoofthemneedtobefittedbeforetheICsocket.Youcan
makethelinksfromtelephonecable:thesinglestrandedvarietyusedindoors
towiretelephonesockets.Stretchingthecoreslightlywillstraightenitand
alsoallowtheinsulationtoslipoff.
