14,000 marijuana
plants discovered

on Friday, Merritt rCMP attended at

a location near skuhun Creek Fsr off
highway 8, approx. 60 km west of town,
where a hiker in the area had stumbled
across several thousand marijuana plants
growing in the forest on crown land.
rCMP located approx. 14,000 plants
in the final stages of growth, ready to be
harvested. The plants were seized and
destroyed over two days with the assistance of Merritt Fire rescue.
Police say the set up was very sophisticated for an outdoor grow operation
and included soil cultivation and irrigation. The estimated street value of the
plants is $10-12 million.
no charges have been laid at this time
and the file is still under investigation.

Advance voting chaos

Dozens of people from Merritt, the

nicola Valley and Logan Lake were denied their democratic right to vote by
stephen harpers cuts to elections
Canada, said harry Lali, the former BC
Minister of Transportation and highways and 4-time local MLA.
The Advance Polling station in Merritt ran out of ballots Monday, the last
day for advance voting in Merritt. elections Canada supplied only 250 ballots
for the final day when the turnout was as
actually larger than the first day of advance polling, with 420 people coming
out to vote. 350 electors voted on Friday.
The same happened in revelstoke,
said Lali. If it happened in Merritt and
in revelstoke, then it must have happened across Canada.
Lali remarked: It is unbelievable that
dozens of people were turned away in
Merritt and asked to come back on General election Day to vote. I was at the
Merritt polling station at 7:20pm last
night [Monday] and witnessed about 1520 people turned away myself.
The fault for the chaos at elections
Canada lies squarely at the feet of harper
and the Conservatives. harper made
huge cuts to elections Canada, and the
chickens are coming home to roost.
First, the Conservatives cut the number of polling stations in many towns
and villages across the country, such as
no Advance Poll in the Municipality of
Logan Lake. second, not enough polling
booths and staff were made available at
these polling stations, thus creating long
line-ups for voters. Third, many voters in
rural Canada were told to vote in polling
stations as far away as 500 kilometres. Finally, harpers cuts denied voters their
right to vote in advance because sufficient ballots were not provided.
